Apologies for the necro, but I didn't know others did this and I looove seeing what everyone else does :3

My main scheme is anime robot girls. My laptop is Nagato, my pi 4 is Honey, and my desktop is currently Maetel. The desktop situation is a bit more complicated than that, since I call the machine as a whole Theseus and change the hostname along with major hardware revision, though I haven't had a major upgrade since I decided on that. So what's spraypainted on the side now is "Theseus v1.0 Maetel".

Might as well post an update of mine.

If you don't remember, my computers (by which I mean mostly laptops and servers) are named after Denjuu, monsters from the hit 2000 Game Boy Color game Keitai Denjū Telefang. Since there's over 200 of them, I'm currently at no risk of running out. But I did make a slight change to the scheme.

After kuriputoraido, I decided to stop using the romanization scheme and switch to the localized English spellings we use in the Telefang community. They were getting unwieldy to spell.

In 2019, I was getting a new laptop. It was named heliopsis (not heriopushisu), but it only lasted a few weeks. Since I had numerous problems with it (fan, keyboard, charging board...), I managed to return it. Incidentally, a newer model became available in the meantime, so I nabbed that one instead, and it didn't feel appropriate to reuse the name, so I picked a new one: rhodanthe.

My desktop at work is called myrtus.

And finally, my NAS computer, albeit still largely the same hardware, also got a hostname 'update' from rikunisu to the English spelling lychnis.

I also recently bought three 64gb MicroSD cards. I've named my SD cards and flash disks random things in the past, but I haven't been consistent, nor has it really helped with recognizing where the heck a card comes from anyway. I still wanted some sort of tracking for them though, so I went with a very simple naming scheme: year.index. Hence 21.1, 21.2, and 21.3. The nice thing is it's short enough I can write it on the MicroSD cards themselves with a permanent marker, so the names are safe from formatting.

so, there's been an update to the hardware of my computer since my last post in early 2019, and while it's still named Aquamarine internally, it's actually the Aquamarine MK.II for no reason other than it's an updated version of the same old computer. will there be an MK.III in like, 5-10 years from now? maybe.

the Q8400 still has no real name, and the Athlonic is currently dismounted at my father's home, but he wants to remount it soon, he's just been using the Athlonic's case for a different computer for the time being

been thinking about buying a raspberry pi, not now but at a later date. if i do, i'll need to think of a name for it

my work laptop is unnamed due to it belonging to the company and not to me

I think I once tried to do that with what I thought was a permanent marker and the ink just came off after a while. Maybe I used the wrong marker?

Some of the new computers I've worked with have somehow just had names assigned to them by Windows 10.

Which's honestly kind of depressing.
But I'm also too lazy to figure out names for them. I was already struggling to name characters in an MMORPG I had played over the past few years, and just resorted to borrowing names of robots from BattleBots.

my main laptop for a decade (an hp pavilion dv6) has been lady dragon III
dragon I and II, were both ancient machines (some sort of pentium 4 and 386), bygone relics unfitting the world they lived in
having instead stood through time with dignity, holding on critical hardware problems, hopes there will be no need to continue the dragon dynasty at her end
which is to say, i don't plan on getting a computer for myself anytime soon, and it won't be named like that

imugi, lyndworm, and long'gui have been my various phones


recently though, because my current laptop is a gift from my girlfriend, i thought it'd be cute to have something that was both kind of a dragon and kind of an AI
so we went with holydramon

Drives have always been random-ass names. Actual systems themselves get naming conventions from stories of way back (I'd link to older incarnations of Ace's but I'm not sure where those are anymore). Main rig's typically always my username, though.

I've just barely gotten into naming my computers, and even then only if they have something special about them, or they have a codename that I can build off of. Oddball stumps serial decoders (they say it's 500MHz/256MB/27GB, but it's 450/128/10), For Parts Only was a completely working computer being sold as, well, parts due to having Linux installed on it, Sequoyah was a silversmith, which ties into Quicksilver, same with Donatello and the Bronze Keyboard. Aleister Crowley was a...n occultist, but that's close enough to a mystic. And the iBooks and Hi-Res PBG4 have nothing at all to go off of. Maybe I could give the PBG4 a name of a famous artist?

A long time ago I read RFC 1178 for some reason and ended up settling on using Final Fantasy characters as names for devices on my home network. I usually steer clear of the ones that are way too long to type and I can never remember how to spell them anyway, like Valigarmanda or Midgarsormr

My family has a tradition of naming devices after Muppet characters.
The wifi is Scooter, the pc Bunsen and my sister's twin custom rig and monitor are Waldorf and Statler.
We are soon to be out of names since Kermit was my dad's 30 yr old acorn and are begrudgingly considering branching out into sesame street.

Though there is another movement to name them after Babylon 5 characters, for every force there is an equal and opposite one.
