I may cultivate an image of myself as a flagrant architecture racist utterly against everything x86... and I am, but I do still have a soft spot for the pre-p!!! era, so checking my profile and seeing one of the funny numbers show up was a nice surprise.
Now, where's that copy of Windows 3.1? I gotta get a graphics workstation set up and it's just easier with a vague semblance of multitasking, not that I don't appreciate a bit of the ol' DOS. Speaking of, I didn't realize this until just a few years ago, but at least with DOS 7.x, you can customize the prompt to look however you want. I have mine set up so that it's just the character >, but next time the PII is out, I think I'll try to get it as bashlike as possible.

i remember when i was young, running Windows 3.1 and thinking that DOS was that weird liminal zone you end up in before a game loads. but this way way before Linux when i'd understand command prompts better.

Never owned one. I had a 286 running Windows 3.0 at best or 2.0/286. Trying to get 3.1 running on such a device just wasn't happening.

But it was my first real foray into how computers work since I was able to repartition and reformat a drive and install both DOS and Windows on it by the time I was 9 or 10.

We used to have a handed-down 486 all-in-one (I miss that CRT) that I think a coworker of my mom gave us like 20 years ago when I was a little kid, we also had a big book about learning MS-DOS, so even though it was very much past its time I still ended up learning a lot about it and getting a lot of appreciation for the era and some of its games

It's sadly been dead for years, I finally opened it up recently, turns out a barrel capacitor leaked all over the board, and it was like that long enough to be pretty toast (it was probably like that for the better part of a decade) and had even corroded the metal at the back of the case, so we just ended up getting rid of it since it very much would've been beyond my repair ability... I'm really hoping my parents didn't throw away the good Sound Blaster I took out of it though, I really wanted to keep that in case I ever get another system to replace it

I miss that computer a lot, it was very fun to mess with, there's something about old DOS machines that I feel like you don't get when using an emulator

That's a shame, it does look like a pretty awesome little computer. I just have a thing for all in ones, I guess. They remind me of the TV my grandma had as a kid that had a VCR built in.

Never used one, but hopefully that awfulness makes them cheap. I've been really curious about how it would turn out to make a console using off the shelf '80s parts, and the 286 (specifically, a 20MHz Am286) was always slated just because of the exact year (1987) that I had in mind for it.

If anything, it'd be the (80)186 that was deleted from PC history, as 286 was released the same year (and used instead) and was significantly faster than the original 8086 ... of course 386 a few years later was an even bigger jump and introduced 32bit

287 still works too, it's the math coprocessor

Can you delete something that was never there in the first place? The 186 (and 188) weren't PC-compatible, so they weren't used in any PCs. (Okay, I lied, some PCs used them.)

Since a console probably isn't worried about being PC-compatible, the 186 might be a better choice than the 286.

A 286 has about twice as many transistors as a 186, which means it'll be more expensive in 1987. Those extra transistors get you a MMU, but a MMU isn't particularly useful when you're running only one program at a time.

A 286 doesn't have built-in peripherals, which means the support logic may be more expensive. A 186 has a clock generator, timers, an interrupt controller, a DMA controller, and programmable address decoding logic.
