Have you been using this Matrix thing to chat? It's sort of a federated Discord alternative! We like federation!

Since my friends have been using Discord more frequently lately, I thought it was time I finally did something to make sure we don't get stuck there, so I set up a Matrix server. I haven't invited many people yet because I'm still in the testing phase, but if you have Matrix, shoot me a message @rdh:space-j.am. And if you're curious about it, feel free to join at Space-J.am.

I really wanna throw my weight behind an open, federated Discord substitute, so I've been following Matrix... We're currently experimenting with bridging a few channels to Matrix in the GBDev community. It's not there yet, but it's getting close. I really, really hope the get the "spaces" feature right.

It's supposed to be a way to organize channels together, like a server on Discord! Cause currently everything just gets thrown in one long list and it's a mess. The spec proposal is here if you wanna check it out but it gets a bit technical.

i've been on matrix for a while, it's nice and i'd love if it replaced discord, but there's no chance of getting most places, even relatively small, to move

same situation as with signal (or whatever encrypted messaging app is hot now) vs whatsapp and social mediae

I suppose my thought on that is, we were all once on teamspeak, then everyone moved to Skype, then to Discord. Eventually, people will move from Discord, and if we start getting our friends used to the idea of Matrix, maybe we can make that the next move?

i've never given any of these a try because i've never known anyone who uses them (probably because since they don't use discord, i don't have a way to know them)

when i hear of these kinds of messengers i just think of /g/ and assume the kind of people who'd use them would be the kind of people who post on that board (very unpleasant). i could be wrong though

IRC seems cool, I just have terrible memories of it due to me being like 12 last time I used it. I guess I should try it out again, I just need a really strong push to cancel out the memories of me being utter cringe and getting called out on it.

i used IRC quite a bit in 2014, in the servers for Kafuka and Kuribo64. it was alright, but after Discord came out, i just couldn't go back. the convenience gets a hold of us all, eventually. i don't think i'm missing out on saving the world by using it. but to each their own. i like that IRC still exists

sometimes i wanna set up an IRC bouncer so i can stay connected to jul's IRC server, but that's just a proxy of one of the discord server's channel, so there's not much point

i haven't been on K64 in years though... last i recall they didn't have a discord server and was still IRC-only

in fact rokken i think IRC is a good fit for use on the old powermacs you use

After using Discord Lite for a while, most of the convenience of Discord is... well, not quite as present, so I could give it a shot. I'm not really under any assumptions and I doubt that anyone is, but principle is certainly nice to keep, if just for the self-righteous peace of mind.

I use Matrix to collaborate on projects with some people. I don't have much to say about the protocol itself except that I admire the ethos and think owning/self-hosting your communications platform is important. I dislike Discord's walled garden approach and think it's a shame that the user experience is so good, because it's trapping people into a proprietary app.

The main Matrix client I've used is Element, and it's... not great. The user experience falls far short of Discord, and it doesn't have the aesthetic charm of IRC. I haven't looked for alternatives though.

In an ideal world IRC would be given the attention it deserves to bring nice quality of life features to the clients. Open protocols with any number of server and client implementations is the dream.
