I'm just glad I knew I had a marketable skill a long ways back and some semblance of what to do to realize it. I was always pushed to do well in school but there was really no endgame past that. I was just told to run blindly into it, not really caring about the goal because 'you're smart, you'll figure it out'.

I think a lot of people lack that direction and I think a lot of people would rather not settle into something they don't want to do. Thankfully, I had liked what my current profession is or whereabouts at an early age so it wasn't a big shock to me that I eventually ended up doing what I'm doing now, even if it's not for too terribly much money.

I'm degreeless but I'm doing pretty good for myself on my own.

i'd definitely like to find a skill that i possess that others would pay me to do, even if i don't find it especially difficult. which would obviously be something involving pressing buttons on a computer—a very confusing task for some.

That was also me well into my 20's (lived with my parents until 25), I eventually got a fulltime job and my apartment alone but that's about as far as my adult life went

I also used to be so much more productive with my free time

my website with neocities also got deleted for no reason while i was updating a page. this happened over a year ago, i think. what a stupid ass issue.

before neocities i tried setting up an FTP account on my webserver for them, but FileZilla was too complicated for them. it's a shame that neocities' web editor has to be so dang good
I'd never heard about these issues with Neocities, but now it's making me glad that I decided against using it and instead just self-admin my site on a VPS and write it by hand, jeez

i went on r/neocities, it's right up there, other people having this problem... there was a post over a year ago too of people having the same problem. it's a shame.

it's funny to think of neocities following in geocities footsteps. i wonder how much longer it will last before it too inevitably shuts down?

self-hosting is a great time though. i'd never do it off a home server, since i don't want people connecting to my home, but my dreamhost shared webserver gets the job done. i'm always pondering if a VPS would be a fun learning experience though...

I'm already a Linux fan so I just consider using a VPS part of the fun hobby (my VPS is even running Arch which probably sounds insane to most people), but using them has also been part of how I've learned Linux stuff, it can be a good time and I think usually cheaper than shared hosting, you can probably also set up your own admin panel to make it similarly easy but I just do things manually so I've never bothered and I don't know how that works

I'm personally using RamNode because of the price, their cheapest VPS is like $3 a month and is plenty for my webserver, I also like how their system lets me add credit at any time instead of a fixed billing cycle, their hourly billing system would also let me spin up another VPS for a short period of time for really cheap if I need to but the need hasn't really came up yet

I used to use Hostwinds but not only do they not have the $3 tier, I also don't trust them ever since I restored a snapshot on a VPS and they emailed me its root password in plaintext, I'm not sure I can trust a host like that and it drove me to immediately pack up and leave

i might take a look for funsies. dunno if it'll ever replace my webserver, cause i've got critical emails and stuff on there i wouldn't trust myself administrating, but it'd be cool to use my minimal linux knowledge where linux thrives best

using arch as a server though? arguably dumb but i say it's pretty based

I should look into options to figure out what to do to keep privacy while self-hosting. I'm stubborn and want to use my own hardware, but I do suppose that letting everyone see my IP address is unwise.

Talking about schooling: I wanted to do something with computers, so I did an apprenticeship in IT after secondary school (About 10th year / 17 years old).

Wasn't really good at it, had some ups and downs, learnt a lot about life too, I was sub 20 back then. But after passing the 4 year course, I didn't find work. Everyone wanted more experience or at least some kind of bachelors degree. So I died a 1 year course to then enter uni.

But the best thing happened in the 2nd semester: I started training to be a part time train driver. That was 16 years ago. I'm still employed with that railway. So it really worked out for me.

Don't get me wrong, I love computers and technology, but an office job just wouldn't be for me. In that regard, I got lucky. Also, somehow I just can't do 'creative' things. At least not on order. Programming counts as creative for me.

And I hope everyone finds a job or profession that keeps them afloat (or more) and they enjoy.
