Aside from having upgraded to Linux Mint 20.1 I don't really have any updates.

My father has been trying some luck with the BSD family and the end results seems to be: no. Just no.

Like, the system itself is not bad but driver support for video and even network made his experience a lot more difficult. It also has a lot less hand-holding than even most Linux distributions, so you really gotta know how your system is working to configure it. It seems to be that all you see is violence in movies an-- *ahem*, that driver support is just an issue in the *nix family overall, but it's specially bad with BSDs since they tend to be used mostly in very specific hardware and specific use cases.

Pop! is a really impressive project and 100% the one to recommend to someone who needs a system that Just Werks. Are you using the new version with the cosmic desktop? I'm curious how nice that is, I've heard mixed things.

Personally I'm also hanging out in GNOMEland rn (still on Arch), for some reason trying to beat GNOME into a more traditional setup like I use on xfce. Honestly it works really well but I think I'm doomed to DE hopping for eternity, something in my brain will just snap and I feel a compulsion to move. Oh well, I only wish I could use Pantheon on Arch...

Did you use the new installer or do a classic manual install?

ah, i did a manual install! i just found out about the new installer
i'm really fond of doing a manual install, actually! there's something strangely heartening and fun about the process of assembling my own system, setting up partitions and EFI and locale stuff, tweaking the ACPI responses and writing tiny little shell scripts and setting up X and a desktop environment and all of that

i made my own openbox theme and conky config and everything, which was fun

Oh dang, I kind of feel like you're missing out. The whole BSD ecosystem is really nice. You might say, "The world is quiet here." While not everything works, everything that does work, just works.

If you ever find a system where some BSD works for you, you should definitely give it a go.

Hopefully by the end of the week I'll be dual-booting Mac OS 10.4.11 and 9.2.2. Eventually I'd love to see a community-made 9.3, but until that point I'd be happy to even just see the back of OS 10.3.9, which I'm currently using at the moment, this time with Links since I got sick of dealing with Safari 1.3. Haiku PPC might be something to play around with next, or possibly a non-Mac OS flavor of UNIX.

Okay, I did, and now everything's a huge mess. 10.5 Leopard on all my G4s including the Sawtooth, Linux on my G5 that's far slower than Tiger on my iBook G3, which is still running 10.4 but I want to downgrade to 10.2, OpenBSD and Mac OS X 10.0 DP2 on my Lombard... and I still haven't given Haiku a shot yet. I will soon, though.

I'm dual-booting Windows 11 and Arch Linux on my main desktop (separate physical drives though for less Windows Update interference), my main laptop runs Manjaro KDE, and my two spare laptops both also use Arch as their only OS (one with XFCE, one with KDE)

I also dual-boot XP and 98 on my ThinkPad T42

i've only been using macOS these days. it works pretty well, but there's some things i really miss about windows, like 7-Zip, Notepad++, and WinSCP. having to use Keka, CotEditor, and FileZilla makes me excited to get back to my PC in several weeks.

as for Linux, well, i did a little distro-hopping for a while. i reached a couple conclusions that are pretty different than my Linux opinions of the past:

- Debian is hard as nails because the packages are 3 years old
- Arch is flimsy and unstable because the packages are 3 hours old
- Fedora is pretty cool. it's the lightest GNOME install out there, and DNF is nice
- Ubuntu (and variants) just work and have more support than any other distro

as far as desktop environments go, well, i'm all for GNOME these days. as cool as XFCE and KDE are for customization, GNOME is the best for introducing people to Linux. i've found that having a million ways to customize everything is not only distracting but a really easy way to muck up your install and incline you to hop around more installs. i've found that the best products are the ones i don't notice i'm using while i'm using them, and GNOME is that.

also i don't use computers with less than 8 GB of RAM anymore. if I did, i'd probably go with XFCE or something. maybe LXQt? i still have a place in my heart for making everything look like Windows 95. i'm just accustomed to the "Dock + Menu Bar + Gestures" approach as that's what i've been using while on my journey

In about 5ish minutes, I'll start burning my last Jaguar CD.

I don't think I've ever used GNOME past whatever was included with Ubuntu 12? I think I used GNOME Flashback or whatever it's called once. I went pretty much from GNOME 2.whatever on Ubuntu 12 to using LXQt on Slackware 14, and then back to MATE for Ubuntu MATE 18.04, and now I'm pretty much glued to MATE, with Window Maker and IceWM being my secondary desktops. I'm wanting to give NsCDE a try...

Wish OpenBSD on the Lombard would work well. I need to get it online, but the wireless card (a Motorola WN825G) just crashes it when I have it plugged in.

a couple months ago i tried installing freebsd cause i was bored, didn't really go well. it was odd. i'll probably play with it again sometime, but probably won't ever use it as a daily driver (i can barely even use linux on the daily, let alone BSD)

after a while of using macOS 10.15 on one computer and macOS 12 on another, i definitely think i prefer the design from Yosemite to Catalina over the design introduced in Big Sur.

things are just... too big and bubbly. and though i like big and bubbly, i don't think it's really done well in modern macOS. things are much more smooth and slick in the previous versions.

i do think i prefer the Yosemite design over the older skeuomorphic design, though, if i look past nostalgia... i feel like i'd be too distracted if i were to use something that glossy today

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
