Yeah, I don't really get it either

The convenience of cloud storage is a nice draw, but it's not much different than uploading a .doc to your Google Drive, the rest of the convenience just comes down to vertical integration, though admittedly for schools there's also the ease of control and administration

The other main benefit is being able to use it on devices that have a web browser but no offline office suite, like Chromebooks... but that's only a problem because these devices are overly locked down for no good reason. As I mentioned in another thread, I've installed Linux on a Chromebook, and that thing runs LibreOffice great, probably better than Google Docs would honestly (though I haven't tested it, I spent as little time with ChromeOS on there as possible hehe,)

I used to use Google Docs a lot years ago, but these days I much prefer offline software, hell I've been using Word 2003 a lot lately and that runs great on anything lol, office software hasn't gotten that much better in the past two decades despite the ballooning performance requirements

Google Docs is fun to use with other people at the same time, but it's otherwise incredibly painful to get anything actually nice out of it. actually i prefer to use Word 2007 a lot of the time, myself—or even just Notepad++.

I completely forgot about collaborative editing, you're right about that. I guess that goes to show how some people's unnecessary bloat is another person's useful feature, I only ever used it one time while I was in high school but then there's probably tons of people that, for instance, proofread scripts on the fly.
Personally, I get by just fine with LibreOffice (and Office X) on POSIX and Office 97 or 2000 on the glassy side of life, and I'm pretty happy with them.

I personally prefer Word, but I understand why Google Docs is so popular. I think the fact that it is free and easily available online is a big draw. You can access and edit your documents from any computer, even other operating systems, without needing to worry about whether or not Microsoft Office is installed. It certainly made it easy to share information at work among my team members.

It really makes me sad how many people these days are growing up with practically zero computer literacy thanks to smartphones and Chromebooks and the like, things are so abstracted these days so that the biggest companies can keep you locked into their cloud services and walled gardens, I really don't like that

I always try and avoid services by Microsoft and Google if possible but it's a loose restriction I put on myself and for collaborative reasons sometimes it is simply unavoidable to use Google Docs if need be. By itself it does it's job and it's perfectly serviceable as a word processor.

I haven't had a chance to truly mess with it but I heard a good de-googlified open source solution is the Nextcloud Collabora Online app. It's easy enough to set up you own secure server and is functionally a fork of LibreOffice. It's something I would definitely look closer into if I ever find myself in a collaborative project that values open source and copyleft licensing.

i just type things in my notes app (simplenote, to be specific). i'll use google or microsoft's word processors if an employer ever requires it, i guess

as for degooglifying... man i can't stand google search results sometimes, but i never find what i'm looking for whenever i try any of the alternatives

startpage.com is a good middleground. Fetches the results you would normally get using google but with a massive emphasis on privacy of it's users.

Of course -- people have already brought up shady stuff with DDG, and even if somehow they weren't and could afford it, your ISP, people with access to your ME or ST, and any other group can easily snoop as well. At least there's open source stuff that's auditable -- even if their binaries have more bugs than a Bethesda beta, you can always get source code to a program that does the same thing and check if it phones home yourself, and then compile the clean version for your use.

i wouldn't even say just useful but essential. there were a lot of projects that would have been significantly more complicated to work on and edit outside of the collaborative environment of Google Docs. i almost feel like the collaboration aspect is the main reason anyone `should' be using Google Docs (that and the fact that it's cross-platform)

that said i actually really feel like it's a poor implementation of word processing and does not have enough features to suit my needs, and also i hate using anything in my browser because browsers are such memory and processor hogs. i try to have my browser open as little as possible, if i can help it, especially if i need to be focusing on something else.

[but another trend, on this line, that i hate even more are `desktop clients' that are actually some hacked browser that loads the page but doesn't really give significant improvements in resource usage. when i see this, i wonder what's the point]

Electron and stuff? There's a version of that that I sometimes use for YouTube, but it really does improve performance compared to Safari. Normal electron stuff though, yeah, it's just for easier system access.
