InvisibleUp told me about File Converter a little while back and it's such a useful little program. It can convert several types of files, including images, GIFs, videos, and more to several different output formats in just two clicks. A really useful tool if you want to convert something but don't want to open up Handbrake or futz around with FFmpeg.

Also: if you want a free, lightweight (but also kind of unstable as of this posting) video editor, try Olive. Probably the best FOSS editor I've seen yet.

(also I know DaVinci Resolve is a thing, but still)

Pinta is a really good alternative to MS Paint if you're not on Windows, and a free open-source alternative to paint.net. It's even got the same filters, palettes, and file formats as paint.net (.pdn) so basically it's probably what I'm going to be using from now on instead of that chunky program.

but yes, it is quite good. it comes with ssh, git, and a whole bunch of unix-y tools (ls in addition to dir, grep, cat, etc.)
i used it as my main ssh client for a while. it does admittedly take a long time to start up for some reason. i'm not too sure why...

in case it hasn't been posted yet, EAC/Exact Audio Copy is probably the best CD ripper out there. rips to WAV/FLAC, making it perfect for lossless file extraction, and has the ability to fix any errors in CD data, fixing any possible issues with the rip.

I use FastCopy for large file transfer jobs on Windows. TeraCopy is what's usually suggested online, but I couldn't use it because it didn't want to transfer random artist folders in my music folder when I got a larger harddrive.

Also for a WinDirStat alternative for Linux (because of the discussion on pages 8 and 7), I personally suggest QDirStat.

Aqua Trimcelerator, a script you run on Tiger that does the same amount of optimizing.

Discord Lite, a Discord client written in Objective-C that runs on anything from a G3 running Tiger to an M1 MacBook Pro under Rosetta.

TenFiveTube, a YouTube client (10.5) for PowerPC that uses Webkit 604 as its rendering engine.

TenSixTube, exactly the same thing but compiled for Intel (blegh ) Snow Leopard.

PPC Media Center, a YouTube downloader/stream box that's less featured than TenFiveTube, but works on PowerPC 604 processors running Panther.

i like how the first post in this thread is so old it still recommends uTorrent (use qBittorrent)

ImageGlass - alternative to Windows' default image viewer. opens faster, lets you zoom in and sees the pixels, just generally better and feels like it was made by actual humans who use the software they develop

Greenshot - screenshot tool, defaults to Prntscrn and opens a small menu to decide where to send it (file, imgur, clipboard, etc). hasn't been updated in several years but I prefer it over ShareX personally

T-Clock - comically customizable taskbar clock. i use it specifically since it lets me see the date while the taskbar is in small mode (has a bunch of little features too, and it's portable)

qimgv - basically imageglass but cross-platform. you can even preview webms with it. only downside is that it can't preview PSDs like imageglass can but it's a really good option if you're not on windows

sharex - it's greenshot but with waaaaay more features and it rules. i might have posted about sharex in this thread already but i'm doing it again because it rules (only downside is that it's windows-only)

obsidian - really nice markdown-based note-taking app. you can even install a bunch of cool addons and themes to make it your own.

freetube - a privacy-based youtube desktop client that lets you watch videos without worry of being spied on by google. even has sponsorblock built in!

lunacy - a completely free, cross-platform, Electron-free ui design app that's so fucking good. seriously it might not be as diverse as photoshop but it can do quite a lot and the best part is that it's free and Not Made By Adobe

lagrange - a nice cross-platform browser for the gemini and gopher protocols.

tribler - a private torrent client that seems to be immune to isp-based snooping since it uses the tor protocol. haven't tried it myself but it seems promising! (torrent things at your own risk)

hydrus - a super-duper-useful piece of image catalog software that lets you tag and download images from various different sources. great if you're an internet packrat like i am (there is some reference to chan culture on the pages but you can easily ignore that -- the program doesn't phone home unless you tell it to)
