Now that's quality cinema.

Is the Dune movie actually any good? I'm a fan of the novels (even though I've only read the first two), and I know it's probably not top-tier David Lynch material but opinions of the movie seem extremely mixed.

Dune is definitely the worst movie he ever made and I'm pretty sure David Lynch himself would tell you not to watch it if you asked him. He only made it as part of an agreement so he could finance Blue Velvet (a much, much better movie) and ended up, unfortunately, biting off more than he could chew with the material.

The main thing about Dune is it's got pretty ugly visuals, bad pacing and a pretty muddled, incoherent script. It's really difficult to follow what's happening at all, I think, and I'm speaking as someone who hasn't read the novel. And this is in generalβ€”he completely dropped his famous surreal/dream-logic stuff for this film.

On the other hand, as an adaptation, a lot of people who have read the novel seem have mixed feelings from it, as you said, ranging from high praise to total rejection, so I'm not really sure! Sorry. From a standpoint of his filmography, though, I'd definitely say it's definitively his very worst film (and I've seen all of his other films, most of them multiple times).
