Thanks!

My 2019 batch may have more images than 2018, but overall I made less than the years before. The biggest reason for this is because I tried focusing on managing The Models Resource submissions, which continue to be overwhelming. Another reason is that for a while I focused on my backlog of Super Mario Maker course dioramas that I had planned and a spriting project. I told myself I wouldn't make any custom models, but every few months my urge to create won out. I'm still in this mode to this day, so 2020 will be similar.

Anyway, here are my 2019 models.

Reverse Mushroom (Feb. 2019)

Another thing I told myself at the start of the year is that I wouldn't make any Mario series models so that the other Nintendo series could have some time to shine. I broke that almost immediately with this edit of the Super Mushroom model.

In making this, I learned that Brawl uses the regular Super Mushroom model from the Mario games, same texture and everything. As such, I also made a version using the HD model from Mario Party 9. This is probably the least interesting custom I've ever made, as it only took 10-15 minutes to complete once I acquired the base models. I wanted to have something from Super Mario All-Stars, and this item is just about the only thing that originated from that game. Plus, I find the solid-red cap very pleasing to look at.

Li'l UFO (May 2019)

My first EarthBound model! This is part of something that I had been planning for years, but I didn't want to feel like I was just jumping on the bandwagon of remembering Satoru Iwata's accomplishments, so I waited. I like a lot of the enemy designs in EarthBound, most of which are quirky versions of mundane things. I looked through all of the game's enemies and gathered a list of all the ones I would ever want to model, which I then released all at once as an "invasion" event.

This particular enemy is special to me, as I saw sprites of it long before I knew what EarthBound was. So to me, Li'l UFO is one of the quintessential EarthBound enemies. I had originally planned to make this model more ambitious, with a hatch on the underside that could open up to reveal a laser gun. However, when I reviewed the EarthBound title screen, I realized that the UFOs simply shot beams from their sides, so I scrapped the idea. Besides, I couldn't figure out how to make the hatch in a way that didn't ruin the smooth shape. You might not be able to tell from the front view, but the eyes are stretched and angled upwards so that they don't stick up from the body.

Worthless Protoplasm (May 2019)

This is another one of my favorite EarthBound enemies. The curl at the top is fully rigged, though I'm not sure I gave it enough polygons. If you look closely, you'll notice that the eye is nearly the same as Li'l UFO. Most of my EarthBound models share the same eyes as a way to unify them.

Foppy (May 2019)

Yet another one of my favorites. Not much else to say here.

Cute Li'l UFO (May 2019)

The hardest part of this model was the ribbon. I originally modeled a nice big poofy bow until I looked at the sprite again and realized I had remembered it incorrectly. Just like with Li'l UFO, I had originally planned to give this enemy a hatch on the bottom.

Mr. Molecule (May 2019)

Even though the design is meant to be very rigid, I decided to add extra bones/polygons to allow the "sticks" to bend. The "feet" orbs are also rigged with a bone that allows them to be squished like in the render.

Care Free Bomb (May 2019)

This is the last of my EarthBound models, and the only one that doesn't have a recolor. I've always liked abstract and geometric character designs like this. The hardest part was figuring out how to model the hips, since the body is thinner than the two legs put together. Another little challenge was figuring out how long to make the arms so that they could bend in a way to accurately recreate the original sprite pose.

Bumper (Jul. 2019)

I made all four versions of this prop to celebrate Super Mario Maker 2, though I'm only showing the NSMBU version here. The actual modeling part was super easy, especially since I reused the eye mesh from my EarthBound models. The hardest part turned out to be texturing the NSMBU version in a way that looks decent when viewed from other angles. It might go without saying, but this is not in Brawl's art style at all.

Swinging Claw (Aug. 2019)

These things are my favorite new addition to Super Mario Maker 2. I had wanted to make them sooner, but the sprites weren't available at the time. Once again, I reused the EarthBound eyes for the SMB3 and NSMBU versions. I also made a version with floating separate chain links instead of a realistic chain. For the NSMBU version, I created a lighting setup with the original sprites so that I could recreate the surface angles depicted in the normal maps. I made a normal map for screw threading in the SMW version's bolt, though you can't see from this angle.

Dark Wizzerd (Oct. 2019)

One Saturday morning, I woke up with the notion that I could easily finish a model of this enemy in one day. It took much longer than I anticipated, but I still managed to finish the entire model and base texture in one day. I'm pretty proud of the texture, which has a lot of little scratches and nicks that make it look old and battle-worn. I imagine the hands are somewhat like latex gloves filled with sand or meat.

Low-Poly Egg Carrier (Dec. 2019)

I don't usually make my own version of existing 3D models, but I was inspired to create this after watching videos of Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart. I used the original models as a reference so that all of the textures and proportions would be accurate. I even rigged it so that it can transform. Making something low-poly can be a challenge, as it is very tempting to use extra polygons for curved shapes. The end result, with all of the major deck and transformation details accounted for, has a whopping 1101 polygons and just one 128x128 texture.

Here is the texture! For fun, I restricted myself to only using colors from Sonic 3 sprite palettes and based everything on an 8x8 pixel grid.

That's all I've got for now. With my backlog cleared, I'll start posting new models as I make them. I'm still focusing on my Models Resource duties, so updates will be very infrequent. However, I may or may not have something planned for the next few weeks.

I forgot about this thread again. I haven't been making much of anything lately. I put almost everything on hold to focus on model submissions at The Models Resource. However, I do have a few things to share.

Exor (Mar. 2020)

This was my April Fool's Day project for the year. I originally envisioned a reveal trailer featuring Fire Emblem characters that hints to a Fire Emblem character, only for Exor to come down and start rapping. Obviously, this was far too ambitious for my skill level, so I settled with teasing a picture of the Fire Emblem sword icon instead.

Like with some of my past Super Mario RPG models, this one was modeled over the official art. The base of the blade is rigged in such a way that the mouth can slide open without clipping into the blade below.

Fishbone (Apr. 2020)

This is more of an edit than anything. The original Kirby 64 uses 2D shapes for body segments, so I made them fully 3D and modeled the eyes. Normally I wouldn't make such a simple edit like this, but this is one of my favorite enemies from the game.

Raymond for Wii / 3DS (Apr. 2020)

I wanted to try backporting one of the New Horizons characters to the style of the older games. One of the main reasons I went through with this is so that I could add glasses to the base cat model, as otherwise it would just be texture edits. I'm most happy with the Wii version.

Gotchawrench (2020)

I actually started this model back in early 2018, but I put it aside to focus on Raphael the Raven's Castle. Aside from the noodle arms, I'm pretty happy with this. For the first time, the hand models are actually edits of Brawl Mario's hands, rather than entirely custom. I wanted to focus on model submissions, but I kept thinking about making it so much that I resumed it just to get it out of my head. This is specifically the Wrecking Crew '98 version. Maybe one day I'll try modeling the original design, which is based on a pipe wrench rather than an adjustable spanner.

Wrecking Crew Door (Sep. 2020)

A prop for Gotchawrench to use as a Smash character. I did research into those interlocking container lids that only go one way, only to realize that the door needed to open both ways.

Kanbank (Sep. 2020)

An obscure "enemy" from Wrecking Crew '98, intended for Gotchawrench's Final Smash. To spice up this rather boring signboard, I made four different versions: one with Brawl's Bowser, one with Smash Ultimate's Bowser, one with Mario Odyssey's Bowser, and one drawn in the style of the usual Mario illustrations. I also added translations for each of the languages supported by Smash Ultimate because I am a nerd.

Vinny 64 (Nov. 2020)

Based on the character models in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. This is the first time I've ever modeled anything even close to a realistic person. Vinny even requested the model be turned into a VRChat avatar for him to use, which someone else did. You can see Vinny's reaction to the models here, around the 4:53 mark.

Lastly, I made some 3D recreations of backgrounds in Super Mario All-Stars.
Battle Mode (Dec. 2020)
Bonus Room (Jun. 2021)

Wow, some very high quality stuff here. I really like the lighting used on them, too.

Since I was mostly on hiatus all last year and continue to be on one, I barely made anything, but not nothing.

Magical Sweeper (Oct. 2021)

I had been planning this model for many months, maybe even for over a year, but I refused to work on it due to my hiatus. When I took my work vacation and made a bunch of progress on The Models Resource submissions, I spent the final day of my vacation making this model.

The model is meant to cycle through colors with a neat animation. I put a lot of thought into how to structure the UVs so that it could change colors easily, only to realize that I could just set the texture scale super high to make the exact UV layout irrelevant. For the still renders, I made an environment texture that samples colors in the animation.

This is version of Magical Sweeper based on the aesthetic of Kirby: Planet Robobot.

Custom MAG (Dec. 2021)

This is a gift I made for a dear friend of mine. I designed it for his birthday based on traits of his OC and modeled it for Christmas. It is meant to be a MAG from Phantasy Star Online 1 / 2, but like one of the cute decorative ones that you get from a special evolution device. It also has elements of those robot pet toys from the '90s.
