i don't find 16:10 and 16:9 indistinguishable from each other, maybe this is because of work with photography and video. that 1/16 vertical space makes the ratio between the width and height a bit more pleasant. but that said, i still vastly prefer 4:3. the golden mean isn't really that golden here.

They're not indistinguishable, but I can't really tell the difference very easily, especially from a photo. I definitely think 3:2 is a better compromise personally even if others disagree; most people disagree that 4:3 is the best aspect ratio already so I already understand it's a subjective thing. Personally, I'm on 4:3's side, that's part of why it's so easy for me to keep using CRTs these days for new PCs. Still, I don't mind 3:2 as an aspect ratio, I definitely would take a 3:2 microLED monitor over one in 16:9 or wider, and I have a PowerBook G4 15" in that aspect ratio and it hasn't bothered me yet. I considered getting a T60, but realistically I'm probably not going to use it and have plenty of computers already, I'm set on that front.
Anyway, I came here to mention that apparently, media companies are so paranoid that their masterpieces of film are going to be pirated by people who didn't have the disposable income to buy movies anyway that modern computers don't actually display media, it goes through special hardware that doesn't interact with the main computer and it's just layered on top of where it ought to be. Because that copy of Bright was so damn valuable you just have to pay hardware designers to add in special exceptions for your DRM.
I think about this frequently.
Anyway, I wish more "retro" styled games were obsessive about chasing plausibly being from a specific year, and being for a specific piece of hardware. Ideally, it'd be homebrew, but just having a PC game that emulates the limitations of a specific console or specific set of PC hardware (e.g. Pentium with Voodoo2) would be refreshing in the face of all the many almost-NES-but-not-really games. I'm sure they exist, Hrot looks really convincing (if a little... exaggerated), but they're not common in my experience.

Like all the redditors there. I pretty much just try to tune out of most things, especially those I'm powerless to change. I'm at my happiest when I can just focus on stuff that I can actually affect. Like when I'm working on my websites or tinkering around with older, less-online electronics or doing any of the creative pursuits that I try my hand at on and off.
I like Jul. It feels somewhat like I'm spending a little time in an, albeit idealized, version of the year 2000 as seen through a teenage lens. If any of the issues of 2022 exist here, I don't have to participate in the conversation, I can just skip the topic headline.

Been thinking a lot tonight about how I kinda really don't like smartphones and their UIs much lately

...A bit weird to be thinking that since most of my UI design skill is pretty specialized around mobile app design (I was always something of a Material Design diehard), but there's a lot I don't like about modern smartphones, especially with how I've been spending so much time on an old PC lately and giving a lot of thought to things that older software used to do right that you don't get these days

I also feel like we kinda lost something when everything moved to capacitive touchscreens, UI density has to inherently be pretty low (even as our phones keep getting bigger and bigger) to account for how big and imprecise our fingers are compared to a stylus, so while really basic tasks are mostly okay to an extent, anything more in-depth (even just something like typing notes) can be a real pain in the ass

I think at some point I'd like to try making a design mockup of my idea of what a Windows Mobile-inspired mobile OS targeting stylus input could be like, mixing together UI concepts I like from pretty much every mobile OS I know and maybe trying to work in desktop UI elements, I really want to design a concept that really shouts "pocket PC" that strikes a good balance between functionality and intuitive design without overly abstracting things like modern smartphones

Is it transphobic to automatically just assume every trans woman is a lesbian until otherwise specified? I once knew a guy who did that, and I felt like I should have thought he was being just as prejudiced as if he'd said all of us look like men, or whatever, but then I realized I don't actually think I know any straight trans women, and the only one that comes to mind among all of the ones I've ever seen is Blaire White if she isn't pretending to pander to her conservative audience. Other than that, all of the other trans womem I've ever seen have been either lesbian or ace, maybe a handful are bi or pan. I'm personally ace besides one person where we agreed not to pursue anything.

most trans women i've met are lesbians or bi

i think it's generally more accepted when trans people make generalizations about trans people but not when cis people do it

I know intellectually why that's the case -- nobody knows what's universal within a group more than the people being talked about themselves, but it kinda rubs me a little the wrong way. Not that I think cis people should feel free to make wild generalizations; I'd still prefer this, just it seems kinda weird to me based on what morals were implanted into me as a kid. I mean, I guess I'm being hypocritical to moralize like this when I've started to hold that exact same generalized view. Not proudly, it's just that it's never really failed me.

I wouldn't say it's harmful to assume as such, but to voice such an implication with no suggestion is probably unsavory. As far as I'm concerned, it's appropriate to presume sexual preferences even for cis people.

I've learnt I'm spectacularly bad at predicting that kind of thing, so... I try not to.

I wound up knowing someone for half a year and thought they were a gay man - they're straight.
And inversely, similar amount of time, but it turned out they're gay, not straight.

I try not to assume and wait for it to come up in conversation. That can take a long time.

i was pretty irritated by nfts at one point but my anger went away after i realized there was nothing i could really do to stop it from happening. it's just the foolishness of others that can bring me down sometimes, like, the thought of someone blowing a bunch of money on something, possibly causing themselves financial harm, that's a shame... but it happens all the time when people buy all sorts of things with the money that maybe they shouldn't be spending, so maybe it's just another moment of many moments of unpleasant things going on in people. can't save everyone.

i used to be pretty adamant about saving the world, but maybe i got softer, because i'd be satisfied if i helped save a few friends. i like bringing people together. i like it when other people are fulfilled, that's where i try to get my fulfillment. i can't really save the world but maybe i can save a friend's life one of these days.

maybe my "apathy" is harmful, as some may argue (mlk) but intelligent conversation can be very difficult, especially when life is as fast as it is. conversation is already as hard enough to perform as it is...

Eh. I don't think you're wrong to not care. Like you said, you can't do anything about it, so stressing over people being dumb with their money is just going to make your life worse while not affecting those in the NFT world in the least. Humans are just not a very smart species, and I've generally given up on expecting any better from the average person.

Oh my actual god, what a joke

Edit: so apparently the suite of games you usually get with Windows now has video ads playing every 15 minutes and at the end of each game and you pay $15 a year to not get them!? And this on top of the $150 asking price and the ads enabled by default!? WOW, Windows is a JOKE.

a dark voice in my head gave me the cruel idea of making useless software to put on the microsoft store to charge for, or at least fill with ads, just to see if i could make money. but that's more of crossing over into disingenuous waters than just a mockery of it

If you can come up with a good joke, or at least make a video essay out of it, I'd say it's more justified. I would be interested to see how it pans out, honestly, I'm curious as to how much money ad revenue actually brings in for mobile developers. Either can't be too much or it's a ton if they shove them in at every opportunity.
