super neato thread, this!

maybe half or more of my posts (including this one) have been on an 2004 iBook G4 i've had for about two years. came with 256 MB of RAM stock but whoever previously owned it threw 512 extra in there at some point which definitely bumps up the usability a bunch. running 10.4.11, maybe should've done Panther instead but it still works quite nicely regardless. absolutely want/need to pop a SSD in there but these particular iBooks are painfully user-unfriendly, some brain surgery shit i'm far too much of a baby to step to, lol! dreaming of having a proper OS9 machine some day...

there's a board that's dedicated to classic themes for modern windows, though every time i've installed one it's been fucky. but that's the nature of it. i doubt there's a foolproof one out there. RetroBar is a great taskbar replacement on its own though, it looks almost perfect

I use SimpleClassicTheme. the actual experience mostly works, but it has a few quirks:
- The search bar only appears when the first window opened is the Control Panel (there's probably a fix to this, but I didn't bother looking for one yet)
- Only the first submenu you enter in the right click menu displays properly in Explorer windows
- Right click menus in Open/Save windows fail to display outright
- Because this is using the Classic Theme with DWM active, this confuses programs that try to use transparency effects in the title bar. There are certain "dwm redirector" DLLs that fix this, but they need to be copied to the same folder as the affected program. In practice, I only copied it to Office 2010's program folder.

I can live with this though.

Thank you, but not really what I need. The mouse doesn't have a scroll wheel, and for some PC-FX GA stuff I do on this machine, I have installed a Japanese Win95.

Lynx browser compiled with Visual Studio .NET 2003! I can't get it to stay logged in to the forum, though... and getting OpenSSL working looks like it would be a mess.

It seems straightforward to compile it with Visual C++ 6.0 as well, for Windows 95 support. However, programs compiled with VS2003 will run on Windows 98, so that's "good enough."

I'm kinda surprised how decent a 1.7GHz Pentium M can hold up for web browsing these days (using the Mypal browser), even Discord can run on this thing even if it kinda chugs (but hey, at least it runs better than my Atom netbook, which just freezes)

Hey, nice! I'm also posting from an iBook G4, mine's from 2005 though. I bumped it up to the max 1.5GB and it's really powerful. The SSD mod really is kind of a pain, I'm putting mine off for a while but I know I'll have to eventually. You can bump it up even further to 1.25GB, but I honestly find 512 is even enough for Leopard, though it does start to chug when Leopard WebKit or InterWebPPC are open at that low memory.
You'd probably lose a lot more than you gained with Panther.
There's also the option of Linux and BSD on it as a dual-boot option! I hear OpenBSD is very, very well optimized for PowerPC Macs, and runs decently nicely with a web browser on even a 333MHz G3.

A lot of the alleged uselessness of older PCs online is manufactured, and some percentage more is just poorly optimized web pages and libraries. I have a Dell Inspiron laptop just 100MHz slower than that, also a Pentium M, and it was my main computer for about 6 months until I got caught up into the world of PowerPC, and main laptop for a few years before that.
It actually worked really, really well as a Windows NT 3.51 machine... I think I'll have to do that again once I have it out again.

It's all of those live-updating things it has, like avatars and bios, on top of just how inefficient Web 3.0 is. Obviously there's going to be live updates in glorified IRC, but every single element of Discord is live-updated.
Matrix has Discord compatibility, and it should be a lot lighter, with even a text-mode client option. Just having a compiled client rather than a real-time web app makes a huge difference, and with some of the less feature rich clients you can probably get the minimum requirements way down. I wouldn't be shocked to hear someone wrote a Matrix client for a 386 or a 68040. Action Retro demonstrated using Wikipedia on an Apple II when you strip all the formatting away and just leave it plain text, and I know that there were DOS clients for IRC back in the day.
I can honestly say that with a lightweight browser, a decently old computer can still get good performance out of the official Discord, though. Leopard has a Discord client called PowerCord that runs at basically full speed with WebKit 604 (pulled from Safari 11), which a lot lighter than InterWeb which is already based off a years-old Firefox (45ESR). I realize it's not really helpful for you, but it's at least some hope?

Oh man, I had no idea there were custom Discord clients for PPC machines. That's neat as hell, and perhaps I'll have to see how they run on my iBook G4 (1.33ghz, 12") when I get a chance... (and get around to installing 10.5.9 on it, I'll probably just wipe the ages-old Debian install I've got running on it, honestly.)

Now if there's such a client for Telegram, too, I'll really be interested...
