As it is 1080P is starting to stretch the limits of how large I'd want to have those spaces be. At that ginormous resolution I can only think, "I'd only use a monitor that big if my OS would let me specify multiple grids to maximize things in because that is waaaaay too huge for me."

Well I can keep my head completely still and just move my eyes and still see anything on the screen (3 feet is a really close guess, the screen is at total 2 feet 10 inches wide). I never understood any everyone wants to keep their head and their eyes perfectly still whenever they use a computer. There's so much more space for stuff if you just move it.

I can understand not keeping browser windows maximized, look at it this way. If you just resize all your windows, you could have 4 1080p browser windows on the same screen.

There's also the fact that with 1080p and beyond resolution, there would need to be larger screens in order to fully utilize the technology, and eventually it would come to the point where said screens can't reasonably have higher res within the environment it's utilizing, if that makes sense.

I wouldn't recommend a 2k tv. 4k is where it's at and they can be had for as little as 300 at walmart.

It's five years since the last post here, but I'm seriously considering looking at a 27-28in 4K 144Hz monitor when an affordable one comes out.

A lot has changed in the time since, and the market is beginning to look interesting.

The problem is that whilst the Gigabyte M28U is fairly cheap for what it is, they have both atrocious quality control, and only perform 8-bit RGB - the entire reason I'm in the market for a 4K 144Hz monitor in the first place is because I had to RMA a Gigabyte M27Q that had a panel fault, a process that wound up becoming two months of hell getting the monitor returned and eventually a refund issued toward me.

It's mindboggling how fast the monitor and TV markets are suddenly accelerating, especially after the late 00s and 2010s were otherwise stuck in such an incredible malaise.

honestly, i think it has to do with graphics cards opting not to try pushing to 4K for a few reasons, so monitors haven't had much reason to adopt it outside of professional spaces; might be able to make a similar argument for TV, 1080p was adopted pretty quickly but it seems infrastructure had to improve to make 4K broadcasts common enough to incentivise the TV makers to adopt it. i mean, it's been how many years since analog was finally dropped?

and FWIW, the highest resolution any of my displays reach is 1080p, excepting maybe my phone

4k just seems silly to me from a computer graphics standpoint. It's such a pain because you have to fiddle with all the high dpi settings and blah blah blah. You do all this work, and end up blowing up your images, fonts, and icons to roughly the size they would have been had you just left everything at 1080.

I think that's where the failure is. Going from 1080 to 4k doesn't really get you anything in terms of screen real estate, because you have to make everything relatively bigger to even see it. Going from 1024x768 to 1080 made sense, because you get extra room for more windows, more icons, more whatever.

As for TVs... Yeah I don't know why that hasn't taken off. I guess because streaming platforms are reluctant to push 4k content?

Admittedly, I'm not too worried about having to deal with all the DPI adjustment related stuff.
My eyes probably aren't going to hit issues with that for about another decade, hahaha.

I'm actually super interested in using a 4K monitor for text clarity purposes, at 1080p a lot of text feels VERY blurry, and turning off anti-aliasing just... makes it worse because a lot of fonts are NOT designed not to be anti-aliased.

I might consider it once my back-ordered 3080 comes in. You know the one I ordered under MSRP back in December. Hey it has a fulfillment date of July 1st (that I'm sure it'll miss for the fifth time) so you never know.

But I'm good with 3 1080p monitors at present. I'd rather not invest a whole bunch of money in screens at the moment anyways, given the current market.

1440p at 144Hz seemed enough for me when I bought mine and it still seems more than fine now. I'm generally more into temporal resolution than spatial resolution, and going for increased pixel density on my desktop is generally a bad idea because then I'd have multiple monitors with different pixel densities, so my primary monitor is a 32" 1440p 144 Hz VA panel flanked by a pair of 24" 1080p panels (one TN, one IPS). I suppose if your goal is to increase pixel density then yeah, either a 1440p 27" or a 4K 30" is going to be a good fit, but if you plan on keeping your other monitors then multi-display UI scaling is absolutely raunchy in most operating systems (macOS being one of the few that's actually reasonably good at it in my experience).

I have a 1080 Ti which is honestly enough card right now for the stuff I play (League of Legends, Burning Crusade Classic, VALORANT, and recently I've added good ol' Battlefield 4 back in thanks to the 2042 hype) at 1440p targeting a buttery smooth 144 frames per second. Maybe in the near future once bitcoin collapses and gently-cooked 3080s enter the market on the cheap I'll buy one, as of right now the most demanding thing I expect to be playing in the near future is BF2042, and DICE has generally managed to make Frostbite run well on just about anything, so I'm not terribly concerned.

I bought my 1070 at launch and it's held up to everything I've done save for MS FS 2020...and even then it's certain usable. The only reason I gave up my 680 back in the day was because it was getting bulldozed by such titles as Redout back when it originally came out and was having issues keeping up. Ended up throwing my Sandy Bridge build and it with it to a friend of mine that they use as their standard unit instead. Meanwhile, I've got a 4th gen Intel core just sitting there without any use.

Should really do something with that. Thing's got 32GB of DDR3 RAM. Really good G.Skill and I have a case I can donate it to that has an old AMD 965 in it...just lack a graphics card worth a crap...

Admittedly, that's a factor that wouldn't affect me too much. It's definitely a super valid point I've seen hit others, though.

I'm not moving to beyond 1080p anytime soon, that I can guarantee. It's more likely I'll end up replacing one or both of my current monitors to better models (higher refresh rate comes to mind) than upgrading them to a higher resolution.

Right now I'm at 1920x1080@60Hz on my main monitor and 1024x768@75Hz on the side one. Yes, it's quite a funny configuration, but it works. There ain't many 4:3 LCD screens around! If there was one that was 1080x1024 I'd have grabbed it instead! Then the disparity would've been less noticeable.

In the future, I'd kinda like to upgrade to a 4K monitor for clarity reasons once they become affordable and commonly available in smaller sizes, I've currently chosen to refuse to go 1440p at all since I don't want to deal with fractional UI scaling and I don't want the UI to get any smaller than it already is at 1080p (I'm okay with fractional UI scaling on secondary devices like my laptop, but I wouldn't want it on my desktop PC)

Honestly, I feel like HDR's a much more important thing than sheer 4K resolution (for gaming and movies of course), but HDR10 and such is only really a thing on 4K displays, we have a decent HDR TV in our living room (I'm glad my family split some of the cost though, especially since I'm not the only one who uses it), and while I really love the HDR brightness range and color depth, the sheer number of pixels is completely unnecessary from couch distance, I can barely even tell the difference from 1080P from the distance, I wish there were 1080p HDR displays and especially monitors tbh

Also, even though I mentioned wanting a 4K monitor, I don't care that much about that resolution, I just kinda hate that it's a pain for scaling, honestly I'd definitely prefer fewer pixels so that games are easier to run, especially since I currently have a high-refresh monitor and some games (particularly shooters) feel a decent bit nicer running higher than 60Hz, one nice thing though about 4K is that certain GPUs can actually integer-scale a 1080p image up to it, so you can just straight-up use it like a sharp 1080p monitor if you want to for performance reasons or anything

It seems we now live in a time when "8K" is being given a similar marketing treatment to 4K, except 8K is definitely faaaar less important, to the point of being honestly complete nonsense for it to exist, because lets face it, nobody can see the pixels on their 4K TVs as it is (unless they sit ridiculously unnaturally close just to prove a point), so 8K is way too far into diminishing returns to make any sense, especially now but even general... I can't see 8K ever being a thing that takes off in the consumer space for TVs and monitors given how much it costs for such little added quality, but I guess I could always be proven wrong
