if I had a PDS ethernet card thingy I could try posting from a Macintosh LC. not sure how this endeavor would go, given the specs of that beast.

I managed to post from my Macintosh IIci using (IIRC) Netscape 3.x a while back, tho the forums didn't really render properly due to a lack of, or at least only very limited CSS support. The IICI is a bit faster than an LC - ex. 25 MHz 68030 CPU vs 16 MHz 68020 - but I'd guess it might still work!

Yeah, considering there's at the moment slim pickings on that front. Whistler looks promising. If I do get around to reinstalling NT 3.51 for a laugh, I'll probably report back on that, but so far I'm happy with the BeOS, looking forward to Maui.

I remember being enamored with the idea of a DOS-based web browser in, like, 2006. Never did get to experience actually using it.

(nowadays I'm more intrigued by the idea of a framebuffer web browser in Linux, if such a thing exists. ah, how things change, how they stay the same)

Getting this up and running has been... a challenge.

First off, I had to find a driver to enable true color and higher resolutions, then to get lynx installed for -some- access to the web I had to create a couple floppy images, then copy everything over to the hard drive. Getting files into the VM took uploading some files and redownloading them with lynx because I couldn't get VirtualBox shares working and there's no guest additions for NT 3.51.

...Then, finding software that works! WinRAR 2 wouldn't work (threw errors with extraction), but 3.0 installed and works just fine (but crashes when you close it, no big deal). Eventually I was able to extract and install the service packs, and get RetroZilla up and running.

Hey, let's post a thread! But let's get the screenshot and everything done in NT 3.51 too, why not? I was able to find a screenshot utility for Windows 3.1 that worked fine on NT 3.51, but lacks the long file name support of course. This only saves in bitmap format, of course... so we've gotta convert that. Time for IrfanView!

...Oh, shit, the installer won't start. Poked at oldversion, found some standalone executables... hey, they start! Oh, shit, the file open dialog won't start. Surely this worked on NT 3.51 at SOME point though, right?
Sure enough, older versions worked, and I poked at various versions until I found the last one that worked: 2.27 could load and save PNGs, and even change my desktop background! (Which is nice, because it saves me from having to convert everything to BMP.)

Oh, I still have to upload it. Fortunately, finding a version of WS_FTP LE that worked on 3.51 was pretty simple, after a bit of failed flailing about with command line ftp. (6.00, for the curious.)

And now, here I am, posting. What an adventure.
What the hell am I even gonna use this for?

And I didn't even mention 7-zip and modified versions of SeaMonkey not working.

I'm sure there's some other stuff I can install to extend 3.51's functionality... but a lot of it escapes me right now. It's not 98, so nothing like KernelEx to my knowledge...

7-zip not working under NT 3.51 is weird.

I've used 7-Zip 9.20's File Manager under NT 3.51 with no problems, though you do need some updated DLLs.
The required DLLs either came with Office 97, or were part of this DLL pack.

Dependency Walker is really your friend when it comes to finding if something runs on NT 3.51 (more or less).

Though there's surprisingly a lot more stuff that runs if you install the proper DLLs from 95/98/IE4 update CABs.
I've seen first-hand the following working:
- regsvr32.exe (important for registering extra DLLs)
- "Advanced INF Setup" (IIRC advpack.dll). Once that works, you can even install ImDisk through the batch/.inf file.
- VBScript (cscript.exe/wscript.exe). Yes.
- regedit.exe from 95 (once patched, but unstable)
- IExpress
- and so much more

expected to get online with: My Amiga 500, with its humble 68030 CPU at 50 MHz, 64 MB
Fast RAM, Kickstart and Workbench 3.1, and a little parallel port-based ethernet
adapter called a "plipbox"!

Screenshots, or rather photos, will be edited into the post in a bit, because Imgur and
such sadly *are* a bridge too far for this lovely but ancient machine

Yup, with the "plip" part apparently standing for "parallel port IP", analogous to "serial line IP"...? Yeah, I dunno about their naming sense...

All I know is, it turns a port for printers into a slow-ish ethernet interface. Should try testing the connection speed, seems like it can be anywhere between 20 and 50kb/s or so, depending on the system specs.

Posting this from Mac OS 10.3.9, and it's like pulling teeth on a laptop with 256 megabytes of memory and a 900MHz PowerPC G3. I bought a new stick to max it out and it says it's arriving in a couple days. This is not a fun experience, especially not with Safari. I took a screenshot but I'm not confident I'll ever get to post it because of how awful this version of Safari is... or maybe how awful the Internet has become. The laptop is so locked down I can't even change the time zone on it without the last owner's password, so I'll update this post when I have 9.2 up and running. When is 2005 gonna get here already so I can use Firefox already?!

Posting from the same exact install of Windows 7 I've been using for 10 years since early 2011, except running as a Virtual Machine on the new Windows 10 PC..
I honestly can't quite believe that this whole thing worked, and that the VMWare tools installed just fine on it.

The whole process was:
- Running disk2vhd on the laptop to generate the vhdx file for the VM on an external hard drive
- Waiting hours to copy and backup the VHDX file from the external hard drive to the new hard drive
- Realizing that VMWare Workstation can't use the VHDX file even though it supposedly supports VHDX files.
- Running Starwind's VHDX to VMDK converter
- Backing up the VMDX just in case
- Remembering to create a VM with an existing SATA virtual disk. VMWare defaults to SCSI, which isn't applicable for the virtual disk.

It isn't exactly the same experience though, because the host machine is obviously more powerful than the laptop from 10 years ago. For example, with 3D acceleration enabled, 3D stuff capped at 60FPS that would previously run at a laggy 8FPS (or even less) now runs at the solid 60. It's certainly surreal to see things done with a real GPU, after years of dealing with the bad Intel Integrated Graphics of 2011.

Another thing that got buffed up was the amount of RAM assigned. The laptop had 4GB of RAM, which was great at the time, but not so much today . The host PC has 32GB, so I can get away with giving 16GB of RAM to the VM, which is perfect for the 3D acceleration feature in VMWare. The speed increase of this is fairly noticeable, even if 10 years of Windows rot are in effect.

So yeah. The laptop I've been using for 10 years (against the bloat of "modern" websites/software) is now officially retired, just in time for Windows to mark its battery as bad.
