Done like, 9 or 10 attempts at the red dragon in Nexus so far, and I have come to the following conclusions:
1. The fight is pretty meh, one of the most boring fights in the game and I feel like how well I do relies way too much on RNG, considering it can just panic or stun half of my party on a given turn once you get into the meat of the fight. 2. Imperial is a trash class in Nexus. I have had one the entire game and it has always felt like a liability to the team more than an asset. Yes, I *can* hit a freeze drive and deal 6.5k damage (with buffs) on the derg ... if they don't get turned into paste before it goes off, and if they don't miss, and if they don't get stunned or paniced, and if they don't get their arms bound. There are so many ifs and buts to actually getting a drive to land, they are even subbed as gunner to have the "act quick" ability to more reliably get one off before being turned into paste, except: 1. it costs an extra turn. 2. it does nothing to increase hit rate. 3. it increases the chance to get blocked by a status, bind, or stun, which now costs you even more turns. Like, the regular attacks and combo kit for the imperial is rather good in Nexus, which is a step up since they felt rather pointless in EO4 for the most part. But the drives are just baaaad, the risk reward nature of them does not at all align well with the fact that they have really bad accuracy. If the move is slow to hit on a given turn, and you're at risk of getting splattered on the floor until it goes off, it better be fucking rewarding to get it off, and it's just not. So, currently I'm afk grinding my level 74 war magus up to level 99, I think that will do more consistent damage with ailing slash, I can land paralyze and poison on the dragon very consistently and it often last a good few turns. ____________________ [WIP layout as it's being made! Turns out I'm a dummy.
I finally got tired of throwing attempts at the Great Dragon in etrian odyssey nexus (I did get it down to like, 5% of it's health on one of my early ones), so I decided to look up a guide. Turns out? The dragons are not meant to be done in any arbitrary order, the Storm Emperor is the easiest one, and the Great Dragon? Yeah, turns out it's the hardest one. ._. It's the only one I had unlocked because the other ones are unlocked by other side quests..., which I didn't do because I was at level cap so the experience would have gone to waste. I just unlocked the Storm Emperor so I'm going to throw myself against that for a bit, but I might need to rest my damage dealers since they are optimized for the Great Dragon currently..., Knowing bosses like these were coming I saved skill points to spec what I needed for them when I got to them. | I mean for what it's worth, the Dragons were always such assholish bosses to fight in EO. AOE statuses followed by a nuke strategy are never a great time. |

Yeah I mean, I didn't even bother attempting any post games in EO3, both since my party was kinda trashy, but also because I felt kinda done with it? (I did map out all of stratum 6 tho, I really dig that one~)
I think the dragons are fine in EO4? I didn't really have a problem with them there, but you also have the option to get a sixth party member to help you out, including an imperial for extra dakka against the first one. I believe I did them in Untold 2, but I had to resort to the cheese for... the ice one I think? Some curse strat to make it kill itself. But yeah, they aren't exactly the best of bosses in my opinion. :/ Unrelated: Grinding up that war magus was a waste, ailing slash seems a lot more milktoast in damage in nexus. ____________________ [WIP layout as it's being made! It's hard to be disappointed with Etrian Odyssey Nexus, it's a long game filled with lots of really good content.
And yet.... I feel like I'm walking away from it somewhat disappointed? Mostly because of the post game. The post game is when the gloves usually comes off for this series, but, that's usually good? Some of the hardest but also some of the most interesting dungeons have been in the post game in this series. I loved stratum 6 in EO3, and I loved the on in EO4 as well. The one in EO5 I liked less, but it's still really interesting and tries some cool concepts. The post game maze in nexus is probably the worst dungeon in the entire game. It re-uses the same gimmick(s) that the rest of the nexus original dungeons used and doesn't add anything to it. It's also just quite boring and not really hard anyway? The post game bosses are also a let down, I usually don't hold them in very high light due to, as mentioned before, they usually step way too far into bullshit territory. EO4 handled it somewhat well though by reigning it in and making it more reasonable. EO5 was also at least a half step in the right direction by ditching the dragons and tying the level gating bosses to three new original bosses that were each different, both in how you fight them but also in how they fight you. Different party comps would be better at tackling different ones first, it was an elegant choice. In nexus the dragons are back, and while not the worst implementation of them (That goes to like, untold 2, I think?), they are kinda not great. Once I figured out I was doing them in the wrong order I beat each one on the first attempt. On one hand, it would have been weird if the dragons weren't in Nexus due to it being a game to celebrate the entire series, and they have been a big part, on the other, I wish we could have moved away from how bad and boring they are. The Super boss also looks to be on such level of bullshit that I don't even want to run any attempts at it at all. I was excited for one thing though: New Game plus, to play through this entire game again while leveling up a new set of recruits... but... I played through the entire game on heroic, which is the same as expert, but if you ever reduce the difficulty by changing it at any point you can't ever put it back on heroic. It's basically a mark of dedication to beating the entire game on the hardest difficulty. ...but you can't carry that with you into new game plus. I don't get why. I feel like if you have a completed game file on heroic, why can't you start new game plus on heroic? It means I can't work on getting my guild card's last few notches filled out the way I prefer to do it: several runs through the game with new parties, not unless I want to give up that mark. It might seem vain, but god damn, I play through these games on the hardest difficulty because that's the experience I want and I like it. I also haven't unlocked the vampire "class" yet, which is obnoxious to do as is, but even more so if I go into a new game plus run before doing so. I feel like like the game is pushing me towards doing thingsin an unfun way. I can grind up new retired parties on my exisiting file, instead of doing a new game plus run... but that involves literally just sitting there and grinding them up from level 30 to 130, what's even the point if it's not fun to do it? Ugh, I liked so much about this game, but some of the choices and the end of it really left a bad taste. I was hoping it would end with a bang, not a whimper. But I steam rolled the regular final boss, and the final dungeon and the post game dungeon were more of the same mechanics and structures that were already getting worn out in the dungeon before those two, which *also* used it. ____________________ [WIP layout as it's being made! Oh I won a New 3DS from an auction in Germany some two weeks ago! Might take a while before it reaches me though because I sent it to a friend there to avoid paying high postage. At the same time I haven't got time to play games right now so I don't really care how long it stays with them, I'm just glad I bought it now because I could already see the prices go up
EDIT: Oh and it's got those Groudon/Kyogre face plates which are super cool  ____________________

Nice! I just finally got ahold of the New 3DS I bought in an auction last year and had shipped to a friend in Germany in hope we would see each other soon. So of course I installed hax on it. I'm weighing the pros and con of migrating my whole system/profile to the new 3DS.
I'm also taking recommendations for fun multiplayer games, mainly for quick play, now that I have two 3DSes and can bother friends to play random stuff with me. ____________________

I'm a sucker for Puzzle League but technically that's a DS game. Mario Kart 7's an easy sell, much like 8 is for the Wii U/Switch. Can't remember if Tetris Axis did local multiplayer or not. Short of that, I didn't really do multiplayer on the 3DS outside of Pokemon.
I have not reviewed the efficacy of emulators / RA over two 3DSes...yet. I know the ability to netplay exists but I'm not sure about local. That would fill the gap on a LOT of things if you have two hacked 3DSes. ____________________ |
