Also since this board uses not entirely standard phpbb smf etc bregistering and posting does that mean there's a acmlmboard customization just to post that crap?

You can also add blogs to the list of commonly used software.

Considering these details:
  • The classic registration trick for getting rid of dumb bots
  • The forum software not being commonly used
  • Jul not being indexed by Google (probably doesn't matter)
I'd wager this was some normal spammer doing manually what they do best*: spamming.


*arguably, considering they only posted in one single thread.

yeah sometimes these seem to be done by humans. sometimes they'll even log in and edit their profile to have spam in the bio, for example

it's not frequent but it does happen, apparently

Maybe it's sone kind of computer museum deal where people get to see how forum spam used to be an artisan hand craft instead of the automation and eventual obsoletion of forum spamming.

It's really not obsolete, at my work I maintain a phpBB forum with some 100k members and we get tons of spam"bots" every day. I've tried some anti-bot measures to defeat them but it's fruitless because if I look at the logs it's just humans in countries like India and Pakistan slaving away clicking around

I also seem to recall that, somewhere, it was mentioned how with all of the anti-spam measures in-place out there, most of the forum/blog spam is done manually now.

I don't remember exactly where this was actually said though -- it's been a few years.

Like I even removed the ability to input any bio field in your profile until you make an approved post, and after doing that I observed them clicking through every single page in the user control panel, board preferences, private messages, desperately looking for some input box to paste their spam into, it's really sad.

A forum I use to help moderate for a period of time - a VERY long time ago - use to abuse the fact it was NSFW (long story) by having porn on its registration form, and relying on knowledge related to the site for the user to select the correct two images.

That seemed to stump actual bots. I never thought to consider metrics for human-based spammers.

I can't say that would be a useful solution for Jul.
