All I remember is the day that I registered my parents divorced the very next day.

Late 2003 was my join date, I believe... it got eaten when the first incarnation went down, so to my knowledge there's not really any history of that date.

God damn, though, still been almost 18 years. What the hell.
It's wild to me that this place has been around for... nearly 14 of those years.

When I first discovered ROM hacking was in Acmlm's Board in 2003, I used to be a concierge and I was going through a lot. I was 28 years old, now I'm 46. Them years flew by.

I joined in late 2014, also through tcrf.net. I lot of AcmlmBoard history to me is like watching a documentary. Extremely interesting to hear about, but probably not something I'd want to live through myself. I do like hearing stories though! Seems like such a different era of the internet, one that I wasn't around to witness at all.

i'm not sure how you think that is an appropiate response to someone's personal and particular conflict.
especially when it's someone being torn between being uncomfortable with a place and it having been home and a crucial aspect of most of her life, and contemplating upon it.
i'm sorry i got upset from your response. but it's an actually heavy and personal conflict for me, that i'm sad about.

there is a multitude of reasons i consider to having left this board, and yet i miss a lot of the people i grew as friends with that i have lost contact for the same reasons. it hurts.

i don't like how it was up kinda dead for years instead of being archived and started anew.
i believe the multitude of board re-incarnations were the main reason acmlm's board as a whole had such a history. there were plans in the early-mid 2010s of jul 2, which at least i hoped would've given the place the same kind of internal and social refresh i felt it needed. i'm probably the only one upset it didn't happen.

i just thought my "kinda gone oldbie" status made it interesting; finding myself just casually indulging with this 8 years later, with so much except the board itself being different.

i feel every time i'm on the edge of coming back and staying, something drives me away.

i'm a different person, and this is too a different community, one i don't belong in; the place itself was my home, and one where i'm welcome to come back to, but...

i feel a lot of pathos about my relationship with this board too. i've been on it since 2001 (my 20 year is coming up in a few weeks) and i keep coming back, tweaking my layout and making a post or two. but in the way one leaves one's home town and then later to come back and be reminded just how alien it always felt to be there, i feel that way towards this place too. i only come back to check on people or perhaps out of habit. but not because this—or come to think of it, any site—is truly home.

i have very similar feelings, yeah. except to me it definitely used to be home. it's like coming back to a house you grew out from, and some things are so much different, some that are the same you yourself are different, and some others you wonder if they always felt so off

i think it's been easier for me to stay attached to this place, ironically, because it was never really my one, singular, fixed home. i've always drifted in and out when i please, and seeing things change over the years has never alienated me or made me feel less welcome. in particular i was never really that deeply a part of the "core" group of old i guess, i wasn't even active here before like 2009, and i was barely on acmlm's at all. i don't particularly feel like an "oldbie", and if i ever started feeling like my relationship to this community was defined primarily by how long i've been here i'd ask for an account deletion + discord ban immediately

i guess a certain degree of detachment is a little bit healthy. if jul, the board, died again tomorrow i wouldn't care as long as i still had contact with the people (i care a lot more about the discord than the forum). places are ephemeral, cultures change, homes get demolished. but people... well, they're ephemeral and ever changing too, but they're worth a lot more than that. this place would just be an old dumpy piece of software with a few weird gimmicky features without the people and their dynamism and energy and excitement

also i think i don't really see this place as all that stagnant or surviving solely on nostalgia compared to some other forums i'm on, so that helps it from being too depressing. there's nothing wrong with caring about the people, i don't think, because they're the only thing that matters or has any meaning, ultimately

anyways, i have zero idea what i'm talking about

there was a time where a board archival and refresh would've made sense, around 2014-2016. it was pretty inactive, and a good point to put an "end" to the previous chapter and start a new one

but it didn't happen. there are two "chapters" of this board but the old one and the new one co-exist in space, though not in time. not sure how to feel about it. i guess it's kinda like seeing a neighborhood change, people come by, some of the old people leave, houses get rebuild, but you stay. it's a weird realization that the old neighborhood you used to frequent is now completely different to the point of being almost unrecognizable except for location and shape, but depending on how it has changed, it also gives way for you to start anew

i admit it's a bit weird to see just how much happened and how people talked and acted and behaved back in the board's early days (and before that), but it's also nice to see the same people the way they are now. it serves as a reminder everything changes with enough time

a restart or refresh would have been the death of everything, speaking as someone who has gone through similar elsewhere in recent times. the history of this place is one of the few things that it still has; you cannot really "visit the old neighborhood" so to speak if it's all been torn down and thrown away

whether you fit in or not is always up to you, but the one thing i feel about that matter is that i don't want this place to actively push someone away or make people uncomfortable*. if someone doesn't feel like they fit, that's fine and expected; some people and places are just incompatible. but i don't want someone to feel welcomed and like they fit only to get pushed out by something we could have prevented.

if nothing else, even if you only see fit to come around and stop by, that's still more than anyone could ask. y'all's continued presence here is appreciated.

yeah... this is partly the sentiment i feel, and closer to the truth of my conflict-- even if i don't feel it's really preventable, partly to my extremely avoidant nature, partly to myself

that's kind of a way i act in general, i'm pretty fleeting as a person, so i often feel that my stay isn't worth accomodating (even when literally told it is), so i instead flee

but i like coming back

i've got the same trait, i think. i've had many instances where i abandon a community or a person out of a fear of them abandoning me first

i believe this place is very welcoming. i'm not intimidated by this place as much as i used to be
