Vaea gleaned a lot of enjoyment from its playthrough of Hypnospace Outlaw, and is curious to know if anyone else here has played it.
If you've played it, what do you think?

Unfortunately, Vaea spoiled the actual gameplay aspect for itself by watching a playthrough in its entirety beforehand. But it really enjoyed actually exploring the pages in Hypnospace and discovering all these interesting things that various characters were doing!

The creation tools provided alongside the game are also quite stellar! A full music sequencer with alternate universe midi-like instruments? Hell yeah!

hypnospace outlaw is genuinely i think one of my favorite games ever?
like, god that game is so well written.
i don't think there's any point during that game where it completely falls back on, like,
the most superficial parts of its premise (the whole "haha 90s internet so wacky" feeling)

it's not a naive love letter to the 90s, but rather a genuinely measured like,
look back at tech and people back then, and also a magnifying glass on those things now.
and it's always about the *people*. the tech is important to the story,
but it's also just a means to an end

and the tech limiting how you interact with those people works so well.
it creates this like...isolation but also familiarity?
it makes you watch these people from afar, people who lead full lives,
of which you only see a sliver inside hypnospace

but it makes this sort of feeling of like, desperation and fear come out too, especially during y2k
you start to get an horrified inkling of what's gonna happen at the end of that night,
but you can't communicate that to any of the folks you feel a connection to
you can't ChitChat them, you can't email them, hell youre only in contact with one random intern
who got been dumped onto dispatch duty for opposing the shithead CEO
even if you knew exactly what was about to happen and to who,
it's inevitable & unavoidable.
