My sister use to be able to print from her laptop, but I can’t get my laptop to print at all. My computer has Vista though (the others had XP), so that might make a bit of a difference….

You set your printer to being 'shared' on the host computer (the one the printer is hooked up to.)

Once that is done, you then install the drivers for the printer on your laptop and tell them it's on the network. When it asks, point it to the printer you previously shared, which will be available (and pop up to be chosen) if you're in the same workgroup as the computer with it.

Step-by-step:

On the computer with the printer attached:
- Control Panel, Printers and Faxes
- Right click, properties, enable sharing on network

...

On your computer:
- go to "Network"/Network Neighborhood/whatever
- Find the computer it was under (\\SAMPLE-NAME, for example)
- Find the printer, install it and let it copy the drivers and such

In the event your systems are not running the same workgroup, you will need to change them to all use the same.

As an addenum, the computer with the printer must ALWAYS be on when you want to print from another computer.

Hey, Asj here. (Unsur.'s sister)
So, I came over to his place with my laptop, and connected to his network quickly, but then I had to go to "add printer" and I clicked on the right one, then used the installation disc to install the drivers. Works fine.
But, when I try doing the same thing on his laptop, it says “Windows cannot connect to the printer. Access is denied.” And... It says that no matter what I try. So... the only thing I can think of is that Vista is different than XP... (my laptop is XP, his is Vista)
Any suggestions for us?

Edit by UnsurpassedDarkness: I could connect to something called “Microsoft Office Document Image Writer” that was on her laptop, so either I just can’t connect to my desktop’s printers, or I can’t connect to a real printer.

Ohhh, Vista.

I'm sorry, you're screwed. I don't know how to make it work between XP and Vista. XP and Windows 3.11? Sure. XP and DOS? Sure. XP and 95/98/ME/2000/OSX? Sure.

Vista? No.

You probably need to disable some asinine Vista feature to make it work. See, XP will do it just normally, Vista probably has some disabler on the feature, so as to protect you from... uhh... rogue printers which try to download viruses onto your computer instead of drivers when your printer requests it! (Read: Extremely unlikely)

I personally am able to print on a networked printer using Vista at home the same way I do on XP. I'm not really sure why it doesn't work for you...

A Vista user may be able to explain the problem.

*Metal_Man88 prods OoBurns

Then again, Vista acts random, so we may require more Vista users until we find one who's encountered your problem before and fixed it.

I honestly can't help. I've never encountered a problem like that before.

You're right, though. Vista has a tendency to act inconsistently at times.

Sorry.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the \\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty
How do I figure out the printer name so I can try this?

Printer name is the name of the printer that it is shared as. You can get to it via the "Sharing" tab when you view the properties of the shared printer.

The computer name is based on the "Full Computer Name" (minus the dot) listed in the "Computer Name" tab under System Properties. The easy way to get there is to select properties when right clicking on My Computer icon or pressing Windows Key+Pause/Break key.

I actually already found out how to do it myself and got it to print something, but thanks anyway.

However, it still gives that error when I browse to the printer through the network….
