i just got my hands on the Anbernic RG351V, which i'm very excited about because now i can play a lot of games anywhere i want. so now i finally have a convenient way to play FF6, Earthbound, CT and many other games on my backlog. this is really exciting and has basically been my dream since i was a kid.

but as i get older i find that my taste in games have shifted a lot and now i care a lot less about a lot of things that i used to. i find i care so much less about games that are difficult or have some complex battle system, but more for games that are visually or artistically interesting. i also found i started caring more about story (for example, i recently quit a playthrough of Fire Emblem 6 because i started to find the premise of the series tiresome even though i was obsessed with it as a teen) but ofc that doesn't have to be necessary

examples of games i really like:
mother 3, trip world, doremi fantasy, mario rpg

anyway to put it short, i'm looking for pretty, overlooked, sweet old games, can be gb, gbc, gba, nes, snes, ps1 (really most pre-ds consoles) as well as hacks that you think i should try. cuz otherwise i am just sitting around playing Sanqui'sc GameBoy port of 2048 all day (which isn't a bad thing tbh)

Just a few random picks.

I think you might appreciate For the Frog the Bell Tolls, there's an English patch.

On the GBA side of things, I recommend you check out Kuru Kuru Kururin and the sequel, Kururin Paradise, which is Japan-only but has little text so it's perfectly playable.

Have you played Ristar? If you can do Mega Drive, try it! If not, try the Game Gear version! You can't lose. (Get the Japanese ROMs, though. The overseas versions got the "angry Kirby" treatment.)

I'll let you know if I remember some more gems.

Bomberman quest on the GBC, it's a sort of adventure title with a light zelda-ish structure to it. It has a fair bit of expressive characters in it and I recall it not being too hard.

If you like mario RPG you could try Mario and Luigi Super Star Saga on the GBA, it's story is way more over top, but I really like where they take the combat system.

I really like Lufia: The Legend Returns. Might not be to your tastes since it's quite long and all dungeons uses randomly generated floors, but the story is interesting enough and it's one of the most visual impressive GBC games I have seen (enemy graphics in combat generally uses two palette ramps by overlaying a sprite). It's a direct sequel to the two Lufia games on the SNES, so they should probably just have named it Lufia 3.

Crystal Clear is a neat hack of pokemon crystal that sets itself up as sort of a sequel/remake. It takes place after the events of crystal but otherwise plays as crystal... the twist is that the game is open world. So trainers and gym leaders scale up their teams based on your amount of gym badges (wild pokemon do not scale). It also adds a few new extra areas and features, such as a proper in-game pokedex that let's you get all the information you need without an external wiki, a character creator that has like several sprite options and full palette customization.

Lennus 2 is a pretty weird and out there RPG on the SNES that got a fan translation not too long ago. If you want something that plays a bit differently and has a rather whacky story. The main character is pre-set, every other party member is up to you as you recruit who you see fit throughout the game.

Boktai 1 and 2 on the GBA are a very nice mix between stealth game and action, you'll need to play the games with a hack to manually mess with the sun sensor, since the games came with a real sunlight sensor that is used extensively in both games. It's also one of the few games with an in-game time sensor that actually radically alters gameplay, playing during night as opposed to day is very different in a lot of areas.

I really like Riviera - The Promised Land on the GBA, it's an fairly untraditional RPG in structure and I kinda like the story. It does have some light dating sim mechanics embedded in it, but it's generally not going particularly hard on it. It lacks any sort of movement system outside of combat, you just move between scenes of a given area.

Tetris - Rosy Retrospection

It turns the Game Boy Tetris into an incredibly smooth experience, something more akin to newer games. I dunno if that'd quite be your thing, but I find it plays pretty well.

this isn't mine, but i know of a site that goes over a SHITTON of obscure(-ish), mostly JP-only psx games and talks about how good they are. i love the effort put into this website and detailing games that range from beloved classics to garbage that's just funny to look at. i'm sure you'll find something to play on here. check it

If you like Mario RPG, you might enjoy the randomizer. Really, that's true for most classic games. There are lots of randomizers.

thanks for this! Riviera is on my list to play (along with Yggdra Union) and Mario & Luigi is one of my fav games. i don't mind dungeon crawlers at all. i'll take a look at the others

Looks like the thing you've got is a portable emulation machine, right? No reason you couldn't use a randomizer on that, you'd just need to apply it to your rom beforehand.

oh, right you are. i was reading the mario RPG randomiser site and saw that it said it was web-based and clicked away. but it looks like that's not entirely the case at all.

It's only the patcher that's web-based.

Since you mentioned FF6, I'm a fan of Brave New World. It is a fair bit harder than the original, but not in a Kaizo way, it's just that the original is stupid easy after a certain point. Significant system overhauls are involved, though, it plays a fair bit differently from unmodded FF6.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
