Ahhhhh I have a weird relationship with Ready Player One. I read it, it wasn’t terrible but there’s definitely some shit about it that rubs me the wrong way. Especially the way Parzival talks to and about girls, but other things too, like the way it holds up a very specific type of geek stuff on a pedestal, but ignores others. Notably, uh, the girl stuff, I guess. It just kind of reminds me of all the gatekeeping techbros I’ve dealt with my entire life.
I really hope Spielberg manages to make it less like that, and a bit more inclusive. It has the potential to be quite a fun movie if it’s less marred by some of that. Don’t even bother reading Armada. ____________________ Tarale.net |

Originally posted by Tarale Okay, I wouldn't get my hopes up too high, considering how Spielberg girls are often portrayed. Think of the Back To The Future trilogy, the many Indiana Jones movies, Jaws, the Jurassic Park movies he worked on, the Gremlins movies, Catch Me If You Can, Super 8, The Goonies, etc.. Hopefully, though, the portrayal of... their style of geekiness... is more on-par with your expectations. Given, some of these names are things he produced, but some he also directed. I just find that the young women characters are almost stereotyped and objectified, but not in an demeaning way per se, just not a truthful depiction, either. Can't say much about his more recent works... Jurassic World didn't use the stereotypical Spielberg girl as much... for part of it... ____________________ If I referenced UnderTale in the above post, it may or may not have been intentional. Yeah, I don’t have my hopes up especially high, just hoping that in 2017/2018 the studio don’t think that one-dimensionality is still something they can get away with. But honestly, the book has an established audience, made up of the kind of people who think their fandoms are NO GIRLS ALLOWED, so it won’t surprise me either if the studio “play it safe”.

NEC PC-9800 Series Personal Computer マイクロソフト MS-DOS バージョン 3.30C I rolled my eyes at the trailer when I saw it. After seeing the one passage where the MC just spouts names of famous 80s/90s movies and TV shows etc and the whole "Spielberg wants people to go 'I KNOW THAT' in the theater" thing I'm officially uninterested Easily going to be the worst thing he's made since 1941, which is painfully unfunny in every way ____________________ C1 CU CA S1 SU VOID NWL INS REP ^Z |

i watched it and thought it was pretty bad. i think the last thing we need right now is a move about how one cardboard cutout's undying devotion to nerd culture is going to save the world along with his cardboard cutout friends. we have enough of that.
looked cool, though. i think Spielberg reused a lot of Minority Report sometimes, though, and you can tell a lot of it is just Minority Report visuals with high key lighting. wish they showed more of the slums, which i thought was the coolest part conceptually and visually. also wish the movie ended with another VR headset coming off to reveal the whole movie is really just a gerbil playing the main character in a VR simulation. ____________________ sofi ※ please excuse our appearance as we prepare for a new layout |

| I had no interest in the book or movie, and what everyone's saying here just confirms my suspicions. Maybe once it's out on video and streaming services I'll watch it out of curiosity. |

i found it really boring. something that i guess kind of impressed me a bit was how accurate their recreation of the shining was when it came to the parts that actually adhered to the movie, since the shining is a movie i've seen tons of times now the way the actual virtual reality shit works doesn't make much sense to me, especially the cheaper the setup gets. what happens if you need to even just.... sit down? with most setups i don't think there's a way you could even sit down cos you'd just fall on your ass, having nothing to actually sit on in real life also, this is probably gonna sound like a ridiculous complaint but i didn't see any furries or anything similar as background characters, and that seemed really odd to me because if you were truly allowed to be anything you wanted to be, then there'd no doubt be at least some furries in the background, and yet i spotted absolutely zero ____________________

| I'm not really very interested in seeing it because it is basically kind of a film version of vaporwave. Which is to say, pointless and poorly done nostalgia baiting using only the most banal, basic elements of a period of time from a while ago just to make people say "ha ha, isn't that so quaint and x0s?" while pretending to be highbrow social commentary when in reality it's just people who weren't around for it trying to pretend they were. It's the same deal here. "Hey, look, it's Tron! You remember Tron, right? Here he is on a purple background with a setting sun and wireframe terrain. That's eighties, right?" ____________________ ![]() |
