Anyone else here play The Sims? Share your stories!

Ages ago back when The Sims 2 came out I was super hooked to it. I remember I put hundreds of hours into both the GC version (which has aged horribly) and the PC version (which still holds up really well). Once The Sims 3 came out though I fell out of the franchise because that one just didn't click with me very well. It also didn't run well on my computer at the time so I couldn't really enjoy it.

Early last year I bought The Sims 4 and have been hooked ever since. I have 700 hours in the game which is the most of any game I've played in at least a decade I think (the closest game is Breath of the Wild).

I just got a new sim (Zhen Fanglang) through university - he was studying Culinary Arts and now works as a chef. Here he is waiting for his graduation ceremony (third from the left):


And here you can see him with his geeky boyfriend (Li Meiliao) at their apartment:


After graduating he had to rent an empty apartment but thanks to his job as a chef he quickly made enough money to furnish it. Meiliao is currently still in college studying psychology.

The Sim I was playing before those two (Eduardo Rico) was an eco-terrorist-wannabe who also was head of a cult, you can see him floating below:

i loved The Sims 1 as a kid. for a while, i was trying to play The Sims 1, but i just couldn't get into it. i dunno why, but it just felt like i did the work of setting up a house and family and then i'd accomplished pretty much everything i could. maybe the first game just isn't that great.

the most fun i had with it recently was building a big compound house with a bunch of Politics people in it i didn't like. i built one single bathroom on the bottom floor that was about two tiles wide, filled the entire house with the same ritzy, crappy looking statue over and over, had an entire room where the only decoration was balloons that one person slept in, kept setting off fireworks indoors which set the house on fire on two separate occasions, killing one of my sims, and frequently would have people wet themselves because the only bathroom would get blocked for some reason. it was fun

i'd love the opportunity to try The Sims 2 again -- i liked that one as a kid too, but i haven't really gotten to touch it since around the time it came out (2004 or so, i guess). i get the feeling that one would click with me more. i'd probably play that one semi seriously, at least...

I got the Complete Collection handed down to me as a kid and I really enjoyed it, though I didn't get into much of the expansion pack stuff (and even then, basically just Unleashed and Makin' Magic) until much later on. CC really helps to extend the longevity, especially if you make what you want yourself (which I do quite a bit), but CC sites for this 20 year old game are dying and not being archived, which makes me sad. 1 has a magic to it I don't think will ever be replicated. Especially in the soundtrack, TS1 has one of my favorite soundtracks in all of gaming.

Really, I think of the game in the context of its creation: it's about building houses, and then renovating them, and there's a family that lives there that was bolted on later. Thinking of it that way, it's still a really fun time to replay for a month every year or so, and I really hope to replay it soon. I usually set my neighborhoods in the late seventies. Not only do I just like the late seventies in general, but flavor text on the official Sims 2 website retconned the original game to take place in 1978-79. CC really helps with that since I can get alternatives for stuff that's too 1998 to be period correct.

2 and 3 I haven't played in years to be honest. 2 is the foundation for the series going forward and while yeah, it's a good game, it just feels like 4 but worse. I had 2 on PS2, that might factor into it. 4 is, I feel, the most flexible of the games if you don't mind about the color swatch feature from 3 being removed. It's the one with the most potential for CC I feel, if the CC I've installed so far is any indication. I heard that 4 is set at the same time as 1, so I tried to set my neighborhood in 4 in 1976, but there's too much 2010s stuff in there and too few mid-late seventies clothing options, and it just didn't work. I gave up and compromised for 1990, since at least there are CRTs and Classic Macintoshes I can use to set the mood.
