Early designs for the HUD and power-up capsule/items as well as graphics for 2 unused power-ups, Life Max (the object for which does exist but only appears in one of the unused stages, it fully heals the player as described) and 1-Up (the only way to get 1-Ups is through extends, either getting one at 1mil points or two at 500k and 1.5mil points depending on the dipswitch setting):

Also found what looks like a few scribbles of Japanese text throughout the background tiles but I haven't started putting those together yet. Lastly this isn't my research but as I was writing this I saw that someone finally figured out how to access the 3 unused stages (and with it an otherwise unused music track) that have been known about for a while: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSntV6xJsSY

2 of the enemies in these stages (the spinning sawblade and the stationary one with the rotating shield) I think are also otherwise unused.

Hi! Great find! I'm researching unused and prerelease content for the Strider Wiki, so I want to ask your permission to use the sprites when I eventually write those articles. Full credits will be given and linked properly obviously.

Other than that, wanted to point out a few details:

The blue capsule is actually used in the main game, a single easy-to-miss time: in the 2nd stage, after the "truck run" sequence, there's a blue capsule floating in the air at the right side, above the platforms used after the truck crashes and flies away.

The spinning saw enemy also appears at the very beginning of the 2nd stage, at the top of the initial vertical area. The saw stands at the very right side (almost into the wall) and slowly moves left and right, but since that part is very fast-paced and the player usually takes the bouncing crystals to move up, that thing is pretty much entirely ignored.

The robot that appears in the first unused section ("Ijiryu") is using a different yellow palette from the one in the 5th stage which is red-colored. I don't think they behave or are different otherwise, but I haven't looked into it too deeply yet.

There should be unused sprites of the pirates from the stage 3 ending/stage 4 intro doing mining work, I think. One heavily-blurred sprite (https://twitter.com/Area51_zek/status/695943511875592193) was shown by Area51, who made a doujin interview artbook for the game's artist, Utata Kiyoshi. According to the artbook, there are also unused sprites of Kirin's head turning toward the camera/player, apparently intended for the intro.

I'm not sure if you can look into this, but there's supposedly an error handler screen that displays "THIS PCB IS NOT KILLING". Since I'm not versed in this kind of stuff, I don't know how this could be triggered or why. As a little bit of really obscure trivia: the silly text is not a misspelling or mistake, it refers to the game's name in early development. Yes, the game (and Kirin too) was originally going to be called "Killing".

Sure, you can credit me as Zenksren. Knew about the unused robot palette, I didn't know about the Life Max and saw enemy til right before I saw your reply funnily enough. Can't help you with the error screen but I'll see if I can find those other sprites you speak of next time I take a look through the tiles

Update, I found the tiles for pirate sprites as well as I think the head ones too, I just need to figure out the right palette for the pirates before I assemble them.

Edit: And of course I find the right palette literally right after making this post

Oh, you find the screen error! Nice. Any chance you know how/why this screen activates? I like to be throrough if possible.

Interesting to note the pirates carrying the missile/drill are just reused sprites from the blue-jacket and fat pirate's unused set, only slightly edited so they are holding the drill up. I guess they probably ran out of time to make unique sprites for the remaining 2 pirates. Atleast they removed the arm tattoo from the fat pirate.

To be honest I've no idea, by complete chance I got that screen trying to load the game up on the FBA core in Retroarch. Also the past 2 weeks I've ripped Kirin's (almost) entire spritesheet and am curious now if any of them are unused, there's lots of attacking sprites I don't recognise so if they're used they're probably blink-or-you'll-miss-it

If you got the sprite sheets, post them and I'll comb through! I'd post them anyway honestly, since having a sprite sheet of Kirin is a great thing to have even if it's 100% used. ;P.

I think the artbook makes a mention about the two throws having unused ending animations still in the game, so there's possibly that.

Those attacking sprites are used after all upon doing some research (the "shredding dance" as the wiki calls it which seems nigh-impossible to do) but on the other hand I've just stumbled upon what looks like tiles for the jetski(?) in the 4th stage tilted at various different angles, my guess is it was originally supposed to rock back and forth on the ocean waves in that little auto-scrolling segment, I'll post them when I've put them together.

Oh right, the Shredding Dance is a bit obscure and really hard to pull off consistently. I've always wondered why that technique even exists, although apparently in early builds it was the only way to use the energy arcs from the final power-up (early builds lacked the power-up system entirely, so no color-changing pants for Kirin!).

Nice find with that platform! I can totally see why those were scrapped: it'd look kinda silly in motion probably.
