The I Spy games (particularly I Spy Fantasy on PC and Ultimate I Spy on the Wii), because despite how crap those games actually are, I was awestruck by their atmospheres when I played them as a tiny child and the way some of the areas made me feel (i.e. the castle section in Fantasy and the music room in Ultimate) and I still today feel the effects they had on the way I look at sceneries in real life.

Oh, hey, these are all good picks. Croc's probably not a very good game, but it's a very charming game and a very cute game and I remember it really fondly in spite of how janky and tank controls-y it was. Freddi Fish was good, too, I cut my teeth on Humongous Entertainment stuff (also Pajama Sam and Spy Fox!). And of course I looooved Pokémon Blue; maybe it hasn't aged well but I don't care, the sense of adventure was really genuinely special when I was young and kinda mind-opening at the time.

I adore Doom already, too. I don't care if I first played it earlier this year, that game is full of heart and passion. Even if it involves murdering demons in horribly bloody ways

You mean as in effort and heartfelt that you get from the developers? I can say that Nintendo hasn't shown that in any of their releases in the last 14 years... the games may be quality but lack that heartfelt feeling that their older games have. Good on you for making this thread!

Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic CD. I just. Can't describe why or how. I played the Adventure games in a time of my life where I just had no worries or cares. The only thing I DID care about was Sonic. I raised my Chao and drew Sonic in my journal and listened to music and that was it. I didn't care about anything I do now. It wasn't even a concept. Sonic CD just has really good music.

I can always go back to playing the Tomb Raider games on the PS1, the games for Xbox 360, and on Xbox One.

UESCTerm 802.11 (remote override)

gosh, how haven't i posted in this thread yet (addendum: didn't expect to ramble quite this much )

so, a common theme from my childhood is that, while i played a few games quite a lot, i didn't ever *beat* any games until years later (my first might have been lego stunt rally GBC, circa 2003?).

that's probably one reason why Pajama Sam 1 (nnthwido) stuck with me so much, the randomization element coupled with damn good writing and acting. other PC games i played a lot of in the late 90's were Rollercoaster Tycoon Gold, LEGO Island, LEGO Racers, Star Wars Episode 1, LEGO Alpha Team, and Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance (can you sense a pattern here? lol)

sonic 2 and shining force 1 have some of my earliest gaming memories as well (possibly earliest memories period?) and when pokemon blue came out i played it with my uncle (his copy), it helped teach me how to read

said uncle also got an xbox when it came out, and the first console game i ever played with analog controls was crash bandicoot 4 (wrath of cortex), which i still have a big soft spot for, despite not really liking any of the other games in the series.

my first ever best friend, we played and talked a lot about pokemon, sure, but hot dang did we play a lot of halo 1 (and later, halo 2) together. still have a blast playing halo games with friends, but i think that's just part of the series' general appeal! he's also where i played TY the Tasmanian Tiger first, which is another series very dear to me.

GBA has a lot of games that i spent quite a lot of time on - me and my sister cracking jokes at Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, getting my first 100% in TY 2, grinding away at endless new game +'s in Tron 2.0: Killer App to finish my upgrade chip collection, my first encounter with a game progression softlock bug in BIONICLE: Maze of Shadows... sneaking my GBA to school to play on the bus, hiding it under my pillow to play at night, this was really when games really started taking over my life, for better or worse

meanwhile, the ds lite and the wii signified me and my sister playing together the most - new super mario bros., clubhouse games, super smash bros. brawl, wii sports (and resort), warioware smooth moves, even the co-op Spring Breeze in kirby superstar ultra... me and my sister would try to sneak playing the wii early in the morning sometimes (since my parents got up around noon on the weekends, and we were only allowed around an hour on the wii and/or computer each day), but that dang startup jingle was so loud we'd have to start with the tv completely muted, heh..

around this time i *started* getting into older games by way of online emulation websites - i have probably played far more Super Mario Bros. Deluxe through a flash player than i will ever play of the original in any form; i tried out metroid (got lost but thought it was cool), zelda (wasn't crazy about it, twilight princess was way better), mega man (okay this is probably why i still can't get into the series, my only impression of the series for years was of it being hard trash), and likely a few others with the takeaway thought of "games really did get better over time"

forward another couple years, i now have a ubuntu laptop and no more time restrictions for computers (and generally less supervision as well), so i did a shady and got ZSNES and a few roms off the internet... and hot dang, super metroid really blew me away! star fox 1 was too hard for me, but star fox 2 kept me coming back to it.... the overworld and progression saving of super mario world kept my interest enough for me to beat that as well (with savestates of course), but i never really had much interest in returning to it - until i saw videos online of japanese players doing weird custom stages, either really hard or fully automatic, and then i caught protonjon's kaizo mario video, which led me to lunar magic and romhacking in general, and then to here (thanks again, ninji and vltone). i don't really hold mario world too fondly itself, but it's solely responsible for my current friends

and for more recent times... halos reach, 4, and 5 have had a considerable amount of time and memories poured into with friends (even nowadays thanks to MCC); Resident Evil: Revelations was a game i 100%ed on multiple platforms playing with my girlfriend; Minecraft is a huge game for most people (for good reason), and i'm no different; metal gear solid and danganronpa serieses still cause me to do big introspections every now and then; La Mulana (classic) is close to everything i could want from a metroidvania; Metroid: Zero Mission might be my favourite control feel of any game (sorry celeste); Tetris The Grand Master does good to make you feel progress as well as still having goals to target; Super Mario v2.0 for MirageOS got me thinking about level design and pixel art; and X has been a continued fascination of mine for a few years now...

quite a lot of games mentioned, but uh, i guess i just, really like games,,,,,,

I feel like adding to this list two years later. All of these go under honorable mentions, for now.

- Knytt Stories
- Within a Deep Forest
- VVVVVV
- StreetPass Plaza
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (GBC)
- TowerFall
- The World Ends with You
- Zoo Tycoon
- Mega Man Battle Network 5 - Double Team
- Pokémon Black
- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
- Chrono Trigger
- Pokémon Puzzle Challenge
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky

...I also love Sonic games but for some reason I can't pinpoint one worth making this list. Maybe S3&K.

One day I'll write some commentary for these.

It's just pure fun and I still find myself good at it years later. It's a masterpiece.

I've only played the original trilogy and they make sense to group together for me but also if I had to choose one it'd be the first game which also works well standalone, I suppose.

Not gonna lie, Ragnarok Online is probably the single most influential game in my entire life. Simply because of its aesthetic choices - and weirdly addictive gameplay.

With hindsight, I probably played it a LOT to escape the problems of my life in the past. I play far less often now.
Also introduced me to playing different characters as different genders. Funny how I could never settle on one or the other.

It's also kind of spoilt me though - we'll probably never ever see another game with its specific artistic direction, both visually and musically, ever again.
And the newer expansion packs simply don't recreate that magic.

See, I have never in fact played Ragnarok Online, but I still recognize the magic it holds. Well, to be fair, I did get to play it for approximately an hour many years after it was relevant. But I still have a specific picture of the golden era in that game brought to me largely by one friend, so it's an important game to me. I love the soundtrack!

Phantasy Star Online 2, Destiny 2, and Garry's Mod.

PSO2 is probably the most special to me. It's a game that gave me wonder and inspiration when I played it, back when I was having a lot of trouble just living. I don't play it much anymore, but I have probably about 500 to 700 hours in it total. It's a very important game to me.

Destiny 2 is a new one. I only started playing it this year, and I'm already at 430 hours. It's quickly become my favorite game of all time. It just absolutely clicks with me. It's fun, it's got excellent storytelling, it's got a ton of stuff to do, and it makes every moment worth it.

Garry's Mod, uh.. I...

Yeah.

Half a year of my life has been dedicated entirely to that game.

I think that's all that needs to be said, really.

Minecraft - the game that i have the most time spent playing, definitely thousands upon thousands of hours spent playing. picked it up in 2010 and haven't gotten bored of it since... maybe. it can get pretty boring. but there hasn't been a week these past 10 years that I haven't played it
World of Warcraft - i started playing it after its golden age. the world and the interface is very nostalgic for me since i watched my dad play it as i grew up. i play wow classic sometimes and it's fun but then i have more fun playing the regular game.
Pokémon Platinum - i've played through this game like 10 times and idk why, it's not even that replayable i just love it
Final Fantasy VII - it was introduced to me a year ago and it's since changed my life. i fucking adore this game, its music, its characters, all that shit. big influence for me.
SimCity 4 - kinda shit but nostalgic

this isn't all of them, but

Kirby's Adventure - at age 4 or so, it was the first game i ever beat. there's a recurring theme in this game that i can only describe as "a dark and colorful night" and i think playing through it at such a formative age left a massive impression on how i perceive things aesthetically. to this day i still think of it as the most gorgeous game ever made and the soundtrack plays a big part in that

Super Mario Bros. 3 - i would always borrow this one from my neighbor growing up, and boy do i love it. the game is littered with all these cozy little Secret Things you can find and i think that was one of the big things that made it more than just a simple iteration on SMB1

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - in most respects i don't consider this game amazing but i sure did when i was little. it still has such good, haunting chiptunes that make it pretty unforgettable. i also love some of its more out-there enemy designs (bun) and also eagle tower is the coolest zelda dungeon they've ever made

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - an even more polarized version of the above. on one hand it's absolute trash to play through and i never really liked it, but on the other hand it has these Certain Elements in it which make me Feel Things I Don't Understand like nothing else really has. plenty of people have already dissected its moody themes of death and grief and whatnot, but ultimately the game is whatever you make of it. and in my case just hearing the goddamn oath to order makes me want to cry for no apparent reason

Cave Story - clicked hard in every conceivable way. these days i find it really boring to actually play through but that just speaks to how hard i burned myself out on it. it's maybe the only game i wish i could experience again for the first time. a game with a perfect blend of charm and polish. a game one person worked extremely hard on. a game that moved mountains out of the way for indie devs to come

Iji - clicked harder than Cave Story in most ways, though its aesthetic is considerably more coarse. this game's sheer ambition and attention to detail was inspiring to me, and knowing that a single person made it got me seriously interested in game development outside of the occasional struggle with Zelda Classic

Phantom Brave - i first played the wii port of this game during a pretty foul time in my life, and i grew to like its protagonist a hell of a lot, to the point where she kind of reversed my outlook on life. she is depicted as naive and kind to a fault, effectively lives in exile for her ~freaky~ ability to summon phantoms, and goes around doing odd jobs for people with the help of said phantoms to make ends meet, even though they always tend to be abusive shits toward her when they learn that she's "the possessed". but! because not everyone in the world is a xenophobic asshole, she eventually gets to help out a family with a daughter who has Nonspecific Crippling Illness, and they become each other's first friend, and... well, i shouldn't cover the whole story here, but i'll just say that despite its often soap opera-ish melodrama it's a hella cute and sweet game and i love it so much. also the gameplay is this really goofy sandboxy RPG thing and it's a lot of fun and it's also one of the only times i've seen a protagonist be given a purely supportive role

BIT.TRIP RUNNER - i'm actually still a little unsure why i like this game so much. on paper it's a simple rhythm game. in practice it's totally not a rhythm game because your actions have to be in motion before the 'notes' arrive. but after you achieve enlightenment it's definitely still a rhythm game of some sort. it's like a delayed rhythm, or an off-rhythm, where you are reacting to things as they enter some portion of the right side of the screen rather than when they reach your character and make a sound. either way, it's really exhilirating to play and master for some reason and i love it to BITs

Demon's Souls - in addition to being a really good game all around, playing through demon's souls in online mode was one of the only times a video game has ever induced an actual fight-or-flight reaction in me. the first time i got invaded by another player in the middle of an already tense stage, my chest started to burn. somehow i had been immersed to the point where it actually felt like i needed to fight to survive, and it was an absolute thrill ride every time it happened. i actually went on to win that first PvP encounter, but even if i hadn't i would still have known that this game was something special to me

FTL: Faster Than Light - this game has its own sort of aesthetic charm and everything, but i think i'm most floored by it just being such a fresh experience. its biggest source of inspiration wasn't some other game, but the concept of commanding a ship in Star Trek, and the game is hard to compare to much else. at the same time it is very competently made, very challenging, very replayable, and very polished. people like to complain that it's too chance-based, and they might be right in some regard, but those people are only playing to win and kinda missing the forest for the trees here. to me it's nothing short of a game design idol that's constantly fun and engaging. and the soundtrack is hella good too

Okay. It's been a couple years since my last post in this thread, so let me clarify a few things on this old list I posted, and also add some new ones to the pile that I've played since then:

  • Tower Unite: yeaaaaah I don't play this game anymore lmao. mostly because a) the community is kinda trash, b) it runs like shit on my PC, and c) apparently macdguy (lead dev) isn't the greatest person (i don't remember the specifics on this front). but yeah, no longer that relevant to me.

  • DOOM II: tbh i only really like doom ii when paired with a modern source port and a gameplay mod or two. as of late, i find the Super Wacky Weapons Mod to be pretty dang good. even then though i tend to get burnt out on doom...

  • Minecraft: it's only fairly recently hit me but Minecraft is one of those games where I like seeing media about it and I like seeing people play it but for the life of me I always get burnt out on this game so fast. part of it is because while vanilla is a nice rounded experience, it can get kinda boring if you aren't good at building or making farms or what not. and i am not good at either of those things (: -- mods like Quark and other vanilla tweaks mods do help, but even then I kinda wish minecraft had support for household items like fridges, chairs, and whatnot. instead of having to turn the regular blocks into those. kind of a weird thing to wish for, but blargh. i am so glad minecraft is popular, though. it deserves to be, even though Notch can fuck off

  • Habbo Hotel: gotta be honest folks, only like this game for the graphics (and i never play on the main instance anymore because fuck paying for furni)

  • Roblox: it is just harder and harder to find decent games on the platform nowadays. i am actually tempted to make a list of good roblox places (for anyone above the age of 13) and stash it somewhere on my website. (novetus is kinda neat tho)

  • Manyland: haven't played this in a while and i kinda wish it was open-source, but it's still cool.

  • Firewatch: ...actually this game still whips (well, except for the ending, but i'll let it slide).

and now, a few additions to the list:

  • Soul Void: an extremely good game boy walking simulator about fighting your inner demons of doubt, anxiety, and helplessness. a very touching game with well-drawn art and good characters. my only major beef is that it has no music, but other than that it is very much worth playing.

  • Escaped Chasm and Dweller's Empty Path: oOOOH man okay okay okay. i'm not gonna spoil much but these are both games by temmie chang, who you might know as someone who has worked on undertale and deltarune. these are both rpg maker walking simulators, one longer than the other, and despite looking totally different they do take place in the same universe. if you can, play escaped chasm first. you don't have to, but it will make the experience of DEP that much nicer. i'm not gonna spoil the story for either but it's pretty damn interesting, i'll say that much.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
