i don't think i've touched photobucket since 2009 or so.

since then, i've usually had online hosting of some variety that i could just plop stuff onto (HELL YEAH SALTED FORK and also starlit lasagna and also elle zed.), then sometimes i've just had imgur to fall back to

No. I closed mine down about a year ago because fuck 'em, that's why.

I totally get that.

Only reason I keep things around is to try to avoid link rot - even if, half the time, it's got that shitty watermark forced on it...

This recent thread got me to log into my photobucket, for the same reason. Just to make sure my images aren't deleted and my old posts from ~2003 don't lose their images.

Interestingly, photobucket complained that I had too many images and would only show 250, but it seemed like they were all there? I definitely don't understand that company. Either way, I think I actually might throw them a few bucks, just because they're actually not that scummy. I mean, it feels bad because it used to be free, and now they're holding our images hostage. But on the other hand, they've been hosting my pics for almost 20 years and haven't deleted one of them. And sure, they put their stupid watermark on them, but they're still displaying them on those ancient forum posts. That's actually pretty cool.

Imgur seems to be doing fine still but I might still move things around to my domain (btw I do have a domain now) to avoid image/link rot

avatars are already there at least

old layouts...yeahhhhhh no.

with the way imgur has been going the past few years i don't have much faith in them not eventually pulling something like this

i wish i had my own server to host images on

there was a brief time that i hosted my own images, but i quickly realized that because of my tendency to destroy all of my belongings, it would last much shorter than it would on a commercial site

i'm kind of in the same boat. i'm terrible at keeping things running, and i've had self-destructive tendencies in the past (although i'd like to think i've gotten better about that, somewhat)...

that said, i've had the same VPS for almost three years now, so there's more of a guarantee that it'll stay up from here on out. but the way my server is set up, i have to log into FTP, then log into SSH and chown all the files manually. already the thought of having to log into FTP just to upload an image is off-putting. one of these days i should really set up an image dump on my server, so i can just access some page in a web browser and upload images that way, but to my server instead of some corporate one...

since my webcomic uses gifs and imgur fucks gifs into videos, i upload my gifs to "postimages.org" and uhh it doesn't look like a place i can expect to exist in a decade. but it works. i'll just keep backups of all the images on hard drives and stuff

if it's something like, a desktop screenshot i'm uploading in a thread, it's fine if that disappears with internet rot someday

it's always good to keep backups of your images regardless since you never know what will happen to any host and when

I never really delete stuff off my hard drive so I more or less still have everything I ever received since my last hard drive crash in 2006.

I really should make backups, there's so much invaluable stuff on my hard drive I don't wanna lose, but the effort...

(also this profile still linked to an imageshack avatar. You know, imageshack, remember those? lol)

I usually don't delete stuff, I just archive it and compress it. Most of the things I've lost are because someone else deleted them (back when I didn't have my own computer), accidentally or intentionally. I also have an auto-backup set up from my SSD to a small space in my HDD.

I still have some files back from 2008 (but I am somewhat scared of opening them).
