You can still download MSN Explorer in 2020, and not only that, you can get MSN dialup servers for ~$180 per year.

I wonder if it's still as jank as it was when we all used to get those free CDs. I tried installing it, but i couldn't get signed in. Maybe that answers my question.

i don't know if you can use it anymore without having an MSN premium subscription?

i'm not willing to pay the $99/yr to find out, though.

I mean I'm sure it was using Internet Explorer for rendering, but it was more like the old AOL or CompuServe browsers.

Since you can't get it installed without signing in, I'm willing to bet it doesn't work without a subscription. On second thought it probably doesn't work at all.

You could test it for only $9.95 for a one month subscription! If that doesn't get you in the door, I don't know what will!

Well children, gather 'round and I'll tell you the tale.

You see, many years ago, the internet was not a thing that was just in our homes. It was something you connected to. Your computer wasn't just a means to a web browser, but a thing that functioned on its own. You had to plug your computer into a telephone line and it would "dial-up" to the Internet.

In those days, it was confusing for people because you had to put your ISP's phone number into a dialing program on your computer, then open your web browser to get anywhere. And back then, there wasn't webmail, so you had to use yet another program to get to your email.

Programs like AOL and MSN Explorer came in and had everything all in one. A single app that would dial in, and present you with a browser, access to your email, and instant messaging all in one window.

The experience was awful for anyone who had the slightest idea how to use a computer, but it wasn't made for those people.
