I'm sure they payed them a shitload for this...

""The window of opportunity for high-definition DVD could be missed if the PS3 continues to fail. We believe that exclusively distributing in Blu-ray will further the potential for Sony's success and ultimately benefit Sony, Sony, and most importantly, Sony," Warner Bros Chairman and Chief Executive Barry Meyer said in a statement, said during fellatio with Kaz Hirai, President of SCEA."
*Warning, statement may be edited for clarity.

I don't know why I put this here.
It's meaningless anyway. I plan to skip both formats entirely and wait for a third. The change in quality isn't enough to justify the investment in new equipment, and this war probably will not end in a decisive way any time soon.

Getting so angry over the actions of silly corporate figureheads is childish, because ultimately they're only able to understand when you willingly abstain from buying their products. They don't care what you think otherwise.

Honestly, I've seen Blu-ray and HDDVD, I've seen regular DVDs on our HDTV, and I don't even see that much of a difference (certainly nowhere near the difference between say, analog standard cable and digital HD cable, to give an example)- I don't know how well these formats will really take off in the long run- Blu-ray does have the benefit of overstated numbers thanks to the PS3...

My opinion? Well... The visual improvement depends mainly on your display device. A movie filmed and transferred to disc at full 1080p absolutely WILL have a major difference on native 1080p displays. However, it's negligible if the output is 480p or less.

I'm sort of learning toward Blu-ray. Since a player was included free in the PS3, I may as well use it.

I am reminded of a recent article that was discussed on Slashdot.

It seems like most people don't care all that much about high-def DVDs. It seems like neither format will "win"; we'll probably just end up waiting for dual-format players to drop in price.

I can't actually watch Blu-ray at even 480p however. Thanks to Sony's stupidity. As I'd mentioned earlier, the PS3 forces HDCP on for all functions with HDMI or DVI. Including the XMB and games. Not just movies like Xbox 360.

Given how rarely I watch movies at all, I doubt I'll even bother to get an HD-DVD player until they're dirt cheap and the discs come down to a reasonable price, which by the looks of it will happen in approximately never.

Sony is dumb, but it's stupid to get angry over stuff like this. The only thing Blu-ray/HD-DVD is useful for is extra storage for stuff that needs it. Movies don't, but it is good for other things. Really, I'm looking at the winner becoming whichever one gets to an affordable price for burning and compatible CD-drives for computers first. Movies just don't benefit enough.

The visual quality of movies doesn't benefit from having 6 times the total pixels? Huh? Tell me more.

Because bigger numbers = better ¬_¬

(there's a point where you just barely notice the difference. well, you do notice the difference in price tho)

When I saw blu-ray at the store, I did a quick comparison in my head to what I had seen before this. It seemed that blu-ray was about 60 fps and DVDs were about 30 fps. Also, the blu-ray had a lot more colors. Pirates of the Caribbean 1 was playing and I noticed some backgrounds I had never noticed before on my DVD. The picture seemed almost as smooth as real life.

My dad plans on buying a Blu-ray player when we move.

There is a difference between HDDVD, BluRay, and DVD.

I found this interesting...

Originally posted by Znork on slashdot

You mean, some people _think_ they can tell the difference (notably TV salesmen and people who've bought a HDTV).

I read a recent blindtest where three experts and a bunch of non-experts were tested for the difference between HD and non HD material on several LCD's and plasma displays.

On the first test, 42 inch screen, 3.5 meters away (10 ft), they all guessed 720p. It was 480p. After much flipping back and forth, some managed to get it right. More tests and eventually getting down to 50" 2 meters (6 ft) away, and there were still some who couldnt even tell 480p from 1080p. Nobody could tell 720p from 1080p better than random chance.

The fact is, such tests show that under normal viewing conditions most people simply dont have eyes and visual centers good enough to reliably notice the difference between SD and HD, nevermind deciding what looks best. You have to get up to 60-100 inch screens at a normal viewing distance to be able to reliably tell the difference; most people would be much better off getting a TV with better color and contrast ratio and simply slap a HD sticker on it so they think it's buzzword compliant.

Citation needed, since I don't know where he read this information, but it's interesting nonetheless.

You're talking about the difference between regular DVDs and Blu-Ray, not HD-DVD and Blu-Ray...

That, and you're comparing plain old DVD movies watched on your home equipment to what is no doubt a demo disc specially designed for this purpose on very high-end equipment. Much like comparing in-game footage of one game to an FMV sequence in another. It's probably not a good comparison.

I saw an in-store demo that showed DVD and Blu-ray side by side, and I could hardly see a difference at all.

Guess WB gave up on the hybrid Blu-Ray/DVD-HD concept then. Probably too pricey for shitty results.

Whoever gets the pr0n is who wins the media battle. Anyone know who's winning in the distribution of fscking in high def yet?
