The good thing is, it appears everyone in my family is doing well and taking the necessary precautions as the state is still in a half-quarantine. The bad thing is, if the problems with the virus itself aren't already bad enough, we're also gonna have to deal with the economic problems arising from it, at a time when things were already pretty bad.

One of the ways this whole economic thing will affect me personally is that, my hopes of buying a Nintendo Switch this year are basically gone now. Over here in Brazil, it went from $550 last year (at last year's exchange rate) to $654 this year (at today's exchange rate). It was already overpriced before mind you. And that's not even mentioning how our currency (R$ or BRL) suffered a heavy hit in the last few months, so that little $100 extra weights more like a $250 change to us. Even the Switch Lite had the exact same price spike. And they're still running out of stock!

And this is happening at a time where people are getting fired or having pay cuts rather than raises. I don't even have an appropriate reaction for this anymore. I'm lucky we're still gonna be able to afford the rent, food and other basic expenses for the next few months, but I can't help but think about everyone else who will not be able to.

Our state has gone one week without any (known) new infections, so that's promising. The shops are returning to normal. I'm sick of being anxious all the time.

I think in another week I'll maybe leave the house and prepare to scurry back inside again if there's another wave.

But it's okay, because "social distancing" is happening. Except that it isn't, given the pictures going around from the places here.

Seems like Germany is doing okay, I think? I've tried to tune out COVID-19 as well as I can, because even without that, I'm not in a great place mentally...

Masks on public transport and in shops and such are still mandatory. I believe major events are forbidden until at least August 31st, but smaller gatherings up to some specific amount of people are allowed with restrictions. Restaurants, swimming pools and similar non-essential places have been reopening, again with restrictions like 1.5m distancing. Schools are slowly reopening as well, currently with certain grades coming in on certain days or somesuch, not everyone at once. In general, social distancing, masks, etc.

Hotspots of new infections do appear every so often, such as a few days ago at a meat processing plant. That case in particular sent two surrounding districts back into lockdown.

Do the current rules and reopenings make sense? Not all. Some of the reopenings in particular don't make sense to me.

I can only hope that, despite things opening up again, people going out again more in good weather, etc., there won't be a second wave, or at least that it will be managable without complete lockdowns...

Will we get through this eventually? I guess. How well? I really don't know. All I know is that 2020 is a lost year.

It's done a good job of showing how bullshit a lot of it is - lots of pointless fees that get waived, data caps going away, rent and other things getting cancelled. On the other hand you have the US which is strongly pushing to get the ~economy~ going because cases stopped increasing, and



... oh. Welp.

that's also what rubs me the wrong way with all the 'mask required' signs, atleast in France; they infantilize you (wear your mask or be punished), don't explain what types of mask are actually efficient, and... let you to pay for your own masks. no money, no dice.

hell, the government even rejected the suggestion of making masks free, flat-out deeming it 'not receivable'. god forbid the poor get ahold of something they DiD nOt DeSeRvE, I guess.

well atleast the town I live in gave all its residents two free masks, so that's something.

At this point, if you take into account the per capita by county map lower off on this page, you can now either take off your glasses and/or squint and get a good idea of where this virus is spreading based on the map at the top of the page.

of course, it's good to take a look at both of them and extrapolate what's going on, especially in regard to your local area, but the fact that effectively 2% of Americans have now been infected with COVID is just... God, why?

So it is confirmed that the virus is volatile in that it is prone to sudden, rapid changes. It mutates.

I'm no scientist, but I think this has something to do with the way it has been spreading:
• China – Not very diversified native population.
• Italy – Not very diversified native population.
• Greece – Not very diversified native population.
• England – Diversified native population.
• USA – Very diversified native population.

With all the diversity, the virus itself diversifies, spawning new strands and infecting more rampantly.
Also, people in the US tend to value personal freedom over personal responsibility, like refusing to wear masks or avoiding large gatherings.

So many parties were held around universities, no place is safe anymore except home, unless one gets frequent visitors.

Personally, I think this gives introverts a chance to dominate. I'm one, and I've been thriving! One thing led to another and somehow I can only credit COVID-19 as the ultimate reason that I received my first paid part-time job.

Unfortunately, yes.

"Please wear a mask when you go outside your home. It's the simplest, easiest thing you could do for yourself and everyone around you."

And it's only made worse when the President says that we'll have less cases of COVID-19 going forward if we do less testing. The man isn't fit to run a lemonade stand, let alone the United States.

the president and a bunch of his dudes got the covid because none of them wore masks. then the president doubled down and starting going around spreading covid without a mask after deciding he was fine after 3 days into a 2 week long illness

so that's what's happening in america on the covid front
