I'm starting to get the feeling that TPCI are really starting to chase the buck here, because a Pokemon MOBA is the absolute last thing I thought would ever exist.

And the fact that it's Tencent pushing it through makes my stomach churn even more. I was already pretty disillusioned with the series after Sword/Shield, and New Pokemon Snap made me hype for the Pokemon Direct then... yeah.

Also MOBAs are toxic cesspools where the worst of gamers congregate and really we all know a Pokemon MOBA is going to end up the same way, except with kids and mobile gamers on top.

It makes me sad to see my childhood end up ruined like this, but honestly the whole industry is chasing the almighty dollar so I don't even know what to think anymore.

This doesn't surprise me too much, gamefreak absolutely have no ethics and they have been pushing a ton of really abusive mobile games for at least five years (but probably longer).

MOBA is however is one of the worst genres to push children into (which, let's be honest, is the demographic they are aiming for). As someone I know put it:
The genre is built such that if your entire team is not EXACTLY the same amount of "serious business" as each other, people are gonna have a bad time. If there's a skill gap, people are gonna have a bad time. If everyone isn't on the same page, people are gonna have a bad time. And then you throw 5 random people together and tell them "If you stop playing when you're not having fun, we're going to ban you"

Toxicity and bad mental health patterning are an EXPECTED result from this.


Like, I can't see this ending up well for people who get into it, it's not like you can't have fun with a moba..., it's just that everything kinda meshes together to make that a real fricking challenge. It's also F2P, so, you know, bet it's gonna have a shitty model in that regard too! :V

I wish I could say I'm disappointed in GF for this, but this is honestly just more of the same: Shitty practices to get money out of kids with absolutely no regards for mental health concerns or unethical practices.

everything from the way they announced it to the genre to working with tencent is just... bad, and everyone i've seen agrees about that regardless of what they've thought about tcpi/game freak recently

pokemon games are a joke these days, unfortunately. it's inevitable that a brand will always get worse over time, that just happens in business

pokémon now mostly profits from itself as a franchise though, rather than a video game franchise. it's mostly about merchandise and other media, it's not a series of video games first and foremost. merch is how they make money

or they can stop being dumb and put the back catalogue of games on switch/mobile already

Just the day before the presentation, I was talking about how the Pokemon company has been putting out so many money-sucking free-to-play games, and yet I was somehow still surprised and disappointed by the reveal.


Just as a side note, I don't think Game Freak has anything to do with most of the spin-off titles other than owning the IP. From what I understand, Pokemon Quest (admittedly, free-to-start) is the only one Game Freak developed. All of the other mobile games and junk can probably be blamed on the Pokemon Company. I'm not saying Game Freak doesn't also make weird/questionable decisions, but we shouldn't blame them for everything Pokemon-related.
