I have a game that I suspect has unused .snd files. Specifically, one of the game's resource files contains a .bmp image and some code for an unused area. The code also mentions several .snd files. I really wanted to extract these .snd files, but I can't seem to find any file extraction software that can extract .snd files from Windows games. Does anyone know of one?

It occurred to me that rather than extracting the .snd files, I could just try to get them to play somehow, perhaps by editing the resource files. I really have no idea where to start with that though. If anyone has any experience with this sort of thing, I'd appreciate any tips.

You might be able to extract data from the file using Dragon unPACKer, a utility designed to unpack data files from various video games. It contains a 'generic file unpacker' addon that looks for sound, image, and video files that might be contained in any file you throw at it. There's a chance it won't work, but I'd definitely say that's your best bet.

Otherwise, you could always fiddle with importing the .snd file into Audacity with the 'raw import' dialog and playing with the settings until it works...
