βAnd then there was a pandemic.

We saw reports from San Antonio, and we're close enough / our city is connected enough to there that we're expecting it to hit sooner than people are acting like it will, and doing the mostly-isolation thing. We couldn't really do that while Jacel was here, but now that sie's left… well, we'll see how it goes. It's likely that we won't be able to hold it down completely (not fully prepared), and there's some optional things that seem lower-risk which might happen, like going for walks where and when there's unlikely to be people nearby, so that we can at least get some fresh air. (This apartment is distinctly suboptimal in the ventilation department—speaking of which, I should remember to open the back door for a while—there we go.)

A lot of my friends up north (Washington, Michigan) seem to be doing the right sorts of things—epidemic response works best when decentralized, and good handling of exponential curves tends to look more paranoid than an intuition that doesn't already strongly encode that idea (that is, most people's) will lean by default.

How're y'all planning on responding? Are you being affected badly? Do you need help? (I can't do much about that last, but maybe someone else can.)

βWhoa, really? The only sources I saw on that said they were only barring those who didn't have permanent residence there. Which is still big, even though understandable in context.

All restaurants and bars have closed in Washington. Grocery stores are a little chaotic. I think it's mostly the fear itself that's the issue, even if the virus is big.

Bay Area instituted a shelter-in-place for six counties initially, San Francisco, Marin, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Contra Costa and Alameda, with Santa Cruz county (my county) quickly following suit. It's going to last until at least April 7th.

I mean, this is gong to hurt a lot of peoples' livelihoods if their job can't be done in front of a computer, but given this is the epicenter of California's outbreak, I think there's really no other choice. I'm wondering if the Seattle area is going to follow suit soon enough.

Going to drop this handy guide to the case-by-state information regarding positive cases/death toll. Honestly, I'm not surprised that 1) Illinois and Massachusetts, despite their high number of positive cases, has yet to record a single death. Chicago has some of the best hospitals in the country, I can attest. And 2) Of course West Virginia has yet to report a single case (as of 3/16). Is it really a high priority on anyone's list of places to visit? Are West Virginians unable/unwilling to get tested? Either reality might as well be the case.

There are some cases in my area, but I'm not really worried. I don't care if I get sick, but I don't want any of my older relatives to catch it.

Meanwhile, people around here are panic-buying stuff and making grocery shopping a hassle for everyone else. I'm lucky that I already have bread, cheese, paper towels, and hand soap, since the grocery store had none left when I went.

Two more counties in California is going to enact a shelter in place shortly, and apparently New York City is considering going into total lockdown within the next 48 hours.

From what I understand, the economic ramifications of this virus could lead to essentially something that can easily dwarf the Great Recession.

Some people I've talked to think this could end capitalism, others don't. I don't know what to make of it, I'm just concerned for today.

I live in southwest Washington, where there have been less cases. I'm afraid of a possible shelter-in-place, it seems like that's just a euphemism for a quarantine, a lockdown.

Last week, my boss attended a huge warehouse technology conference. Today, my boss informs me that someone at that conference had the virus. My boss hasn't shown any symptoms yet, but it has only been a week since he was there. If it turns out he's sick, then I very likely have it, too. I hope that, for the sake of my family, my boss remains healthy.

Update: And now we'll be working from home until further notice. Maybe it's just my worried imagination, but it feels like my chest is starting to hurt a bit.

From what I've gathered just now, I would begin to worry if you've been experiencing digestive symptoms. Mainly loss of appetite and diarrhea. Get lots of rest and drink plenty of water either way, and check your temperature often, especially given your low degree of separation from someone who has tested positive. X_X

With that being said, California's now under quarantine. AKA, the fifth or sixth largest economy in the world.

i've actually heard those things aren't terribly common symptoms? but then ymmv -- as with any virus the severity and onset of symptoms are going to vary pretty widely from person to person

definitely, definitely keep checking your temperature. fever is a huge symptom.

that said i have a weird taste in the back of my throat and i'm slightly snotty so i'm 100% convinced i have coronavirus now

capitalism's survived other pandemics, i'm sure it'll do fine through this one (unfortunately)

this may open up people's eyes about several things

like how in some places pollution has fallen dramatically, Venice gets clear water for the first time in 60 years, etc...

because when a polluted environment is your norm, you don't notice it as much, you don't see it get slightly worse over time... but when suddenly we shutdown everything and the difference is day and night, that's another story.

also, re: end of capitalism

may not happen now, but, given how capitalism has been doing lately, and now this, I don't think it's going to last much longer at all.

like how they've been through a shitton of measures to keep the economy from crashing due to the shutdowns. States have been spending a metric fuckton of money, etc.

when all this is over, guess who's going to pay for that? yeah, the same ones who are already protesting austerity and neoliberal crap all over the world.

in some places they have already reached the breaking point, so I doubt all this is going to last much longer.

also re: confinment

we're confined here in France, this is day 4 of confinment

I'm spending it wirh friends and so far it's pretty cool

fucking clown of a president tells us to "stay home but keep working". various employees are already protesting against that and the sanitary risks it has.

I was curious about how places like the would be reacting the coronavirus. I was not surprised to know they were being ignorant about it, but it was still upsetting. They're complaining about the few state-level "restrictions" as if they're unreasonable or as if they're willing to break them and protest if they last too long. They want the states to go back to normal so their life can go back to normal and the economy doesn't go to crap (money > health, after all). They say that this coronavirus problem is already over, or that it's being blown out of proportion on purpose by the leftist media, or that it will be over when it gets warmer by April. All of what I've read so far is just garbage.

The current coronavirus is called SARS-CoV-2, it's Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The first one also originated in China, near the south coast, back in November of 2002. 'Respiratory' means it attacks your lungs. Most cases are mild, only acting up like a normal-ish flu, but some are severe enough to actually make you unable to breathe. It's much worse with those people with pre-existing conditions or with weak lungs, but the virus has the potential to be deadly to anyone.

Severe cases need to be treated using ventilators, a machine that will breathe for you. Hospitals only have so many ventilators available, once they run out of them, any patient needing treatment will simply have to wait and hope that they don't die. For the entire world (excluding China who's already got it under control at least), this coronavirus deal isn't over, it's just starting. The only way we can avoid this situation where our health system is over capacity, is to try as hard as possible not to spread the virus. That's why many governments are going into lockdown.

Although the fatality rate of this virus is "only" 4%, in Italy (who has 47K cases), it's as high as 9%. In Iran (with 19K cases) it's about 7%. It can get as bad if not worse than the 1918 Influenza (the so called Spanish flu), which had a rate of 2%-10% (estimates vary). In fact, the original SARSr-CoV back in 2002/2003 had a 9.5% fatality rate. That goes to show how bad it can get without proper treatment.

Even with all this information already out there, through multiple different medias, (including WIKIPEDIA for crying out loud). It's frustrating to see these people so carelessly dismissing the virus, mocking the lockdowns and the idea of flattening the curve. Though I guess this also hurts because it affects myself personally as well.

You see, my mother and sister have chronic bronchitis, it's a lot worse for my mother too as she didn't get proper treatment when she needed. My brother was in involved in a car accident last year that damaged half of his lungs. He's a web developer, so he can work from home just fine at the very least. But neither my mother nor my sister can. And I don't even want to mention my grandparents or other family members.

All of these people in my family, they CANNOT get the virus or else they will have to go to the hospital immediatelly. And I don't want to know what will happen to them if they can't get treated.

There are thousands of people in NY infected with the Corona Virus. I'm scared to go outside to run my errands, the subways and buses are empty and the streets of NY are ghost towns.

I hear you. My parents have been smoking since at least their late teens and mom and dad are 69 and 72 now, respectively. Considering they fill their prescriptions at a place where TWO employees have died from COVID (albeit, pretty young-ish and with pre-existing conditions), I am freaking out a little because even though the Bay Area might have dodged an even larger bullet for the time being, Chicago is quickly becoming a hot-spot.

Like, I know I complained about my parents a lot when I was still living with them, but unlike a bunch of other parents I hear about on Jul, they aren't bad people, and they do try to do the right thing for the sake of the family, even if it's buying a 6-pack of english muffins at 35 cents. My dad e-mailed me Saturday morning saying he heard the news Friday night and found a couple of old dust masks (likely from the workroom) that he and mom are going to be using when they have to go out, as well as opting to have their prescriptions delivered until this crisis is over. And considering that they're otherwise Democrat hermits anyway, they're doing a much better job of understanding and reacting to the situation than my half-sibling's mom (who is a Pro-Trump, magical Jesus-loving cuck with who has a brain with well than less than half of a ten-piece McNugget meal, basically).

I'm hoping that they can get through this alright, but with even Little Company of Mary (their local hospital, thankfully just less than a mile from them) experiencing a shortage of hand sanitizer, I'm much more worried for their safety than for mine. Hell, the Bay Area was considered a hotspot this time last month, but with the area being the first to go into full lockdown, as well as the fact that many Silicon Valley workers can work from home/can limit their time and distances in workplaces, I've yet to hear of this area being overwhelmed. Chicagoland has already surpassed this area in total number of cases, and it's bound to get much worse from here.

With that being said, use THIS CNN MAP and chart to keep up-to-date, at least in the United States, about how much this virus is impacting your local area. Stay safe, friends.

the US hit >1% of the population being known to be infected today. a friend in the health sector says current projections are for the peak to still be some weeks out, with a worse second wave to come in the fall.

stay as safe as you can, friends.

Going to have to correct you on this. 1% of the population would be approximately 3.2 million people. Currently, we're sitting under 350,000, so it's sitting more at .1% for the time being, though depending on what metropolitan area one is currently living in, said population infection rates can be either lower or (especially in the Northeast and Midwest), much higher.

Still, the same precautions apply regardless.

Yeah, Gabu's right. The situation's bad, but it's not quite that dire yet. Also whether or not we even get a bad second wave is entirely dependent on how much people obey quarantine rules — if most people comply and stay compliant for a long enough time (that's the important part), there might not even be a second wave at all. The whole point of social distancing is essentially to close off as many points as we can through which the virus can travel, leaving it with nowhere to go.

Also, I'd like to note that the health care industry is largely probably going by the worst-case projections. Prepare for the worst, and all. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be taking their projections seriously, especially as a possibility, but it's important to remember that we're still relatively early in the pandemic and that things aren't quite set in stone yet. (I'd still bet that the peak is a few weeks out, though.)

None of this means that there aren't a ton more people infected that aren't showing symptoms, and that definitely doesn't mean there aren't good reasons to be taking these precautions. There are very, very good reasons to be taking these precautions, largely because we want to avoid that dire scenario. Be aware of all of the possibilities, be prepared for them, and practice good habits. But don't panic.

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
