βThat was neat. It was a bit trite in places, but nicely atmospheric.

αYeah, it really was. I love the art style.

I've been playing a bunch of Dragalia Lost for the last four months!

It's a gacha game developped by Cygames but published Nintendo, who seem to be reigning in the worse parts of usual gacha games: it's a single-player/co-op PvE-only game and they've explicitly not included any kind of player rankings when doing co-op, and they're very generous with free resources (I've paid literally zero cents and I feel pretty well off). They actually improved the gacha system itself four months back (which prompted me to give it a try): you used to be able to pull adventurers, dragons (that they transform into), and passive-skill equippables ('wyrmprints'), but the latter was definitely the most bloated yet least useful category of things you can pull... and so they straight-up removed them from the pool and moved them to a separate shop!

The actual gameplay itself is surprisingly good too? Like, I'm not really aware of any other games that are action RPGs where battles are basically MMORPG-raid-style bosses, with clearly-marked hitzones and timers and stuff. I recently learned that I'm actually able to record gameplay thanks to lightweight screen-recording app MNML, so if you want a vague idea of the gameplay, here's one of me soloing a midgame boss, and here's one of an endgame four-player raid boss on highest difficulty.

Honestly I'm shocked to see the game isn't talked about more...

I'm playing Tiny Metal: Full Metal Rumble (PC) - it's the sequel to an Advance Wars-clone (Tiny Metal) that was released two years ago. The original was a bit meh, but I'm having loads of fun with FMR. A lot of improvements and it's fun!

I'm also playing Super Mario Maker 2 when I can get the switch back off my wife since FE:3H launched.

I've been playing pretty much nothing but Cadence of Hyrule for the past few months. I've been gradually improving through permadeath mode. I started with seeded mode and tried the same seed over and over until I beat it in 3+ hours. Just this past week, I managed to beat not one but two daily challenges, with one less than 2 hours. Maybe one day, I'll be able to clear it in less than an hour.

Oh, and I also beat The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap on my 3DS. A number of elements feel derivative, such as the Wind Fortress boss being a bootleg version of Wind Waker's Tower of the Gods boss, but some of its ideas are neat. The Gyorg Pair boss is one of my favorite moments in the game. The final battle with Vaati looked cool, but it has some annoying design flaws. On more than one occasion, I was just randomly trying items in my inventory to figure out how to make any progress. The game even had to give me a hint because I was taking too long, but the hint was too vague. Overall, the game still felt somewhat like a fangame, but a very beautiful and fun fangame.

Thanks to SNES on the Switch, I've started playing The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past for the first time. I had no idea that so many elements from Ocarina of Time were actually iterations of stuff from this game, including little things like music (Ganondorf's theme, Zelda's lullaby) and story (Ganondorf, how the Triforce works). I'm probably about halfway through the game now, having just cleared the third Dark World dungeon.

Some elements of the game I really like, but some other elements I don't like much.

The game design is fantastic. Many of the ideas and puzzles are really creative and fun to experience, even when compared to modern Zelda games. The Skeleton Forest dungeon, where you have to find secret alternate entrances to different parts of the dungeon, is one of my favorite puzzles so far.

The graphics are a bit of a mixed bag. The level graphics are very well done, with the dungeons being particularly nice. I've never liked the look of the game's weird trees, though. They're stubby and lumpy... they barely register as trees. The character sprites are even more mixed. The enemies are fine and easy to discern for the most part. Many of the people are decent, but some characters (especially in the Dark World) are unappealing. Not like "oh, such a hideous monster" ugly, it's just that their heads just look like vague brown blobs. (See for yourself.)

The music is also a bit mixed. There are certainly some great and memorable tunes such as Kakariko Village and the Dark World, but a lot of the music feels highly repetitive, even by SNES standards. The dungeon and battle music tends to be the worst offender of this, with the boss music having a loop of less than 10 seconds long. Even the iconic overworld theme feels too repetitive, and I'm not sure why. I enjoy listening to the original for a lot of SNES games, but this game will not be one of them. I'll stick with remixes.

I finally beat The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past!

My thoughts on the game haven't changed much, but I had to consult a guide for several parts of the final stretch. Finding the Quake power on my own would have taken me a long time because the game's hints (via the fortune tellers) said nothing about where to look. When it came time for the Super Bomb, I passed the bomb shop on the way to the fortune teller and there was no Super Bomb. You can imagine how surprised I was when the fortune teller told me to go back to it. Then, after getting the Silver Arrows, the fortune teller told me I was still to get something from the pyramid. I started throwing random items into the pond because I had no idea what I needed.

The final dungeon was satisfying, even if it felt a bit rushed in terms of pacing. (It's only a short walk from the previous dungeon.) I found it a bit strange that the primary focus of the end credits seemed to be revealing the names of the locations you visited and to indicate how many times you booted up the game (or, how many "games") for each dungeon.

I have a better appreciation for the game, and the evolution of the Zelda series as a whole, but I think I'll stick with Link's Awakening and Ocarina of Time as my favorite classic Zelda titles.

Been playing a few different games, all at once:

  • Stardew Valley - I started a new farm about a week ago

  • Xonotic - A sweet open-source and cross-platform FPS (I typically play online deathmatch)

  • Breath of the Wild - I've never gotten super far in this game, but hopefully I intend to change that (I tend to have a short attention span when it comes to games, and this once isn't easy, as least for me, to pick back up and play again after a while)

Hey, long time no see! I signed up a long time ago but just got around to checking this board out now :p

I've been playing Pokemon Sword, although I've also been fiddling around with the demo version of SmileBASIC 4 on Switch! I definitely want to buy the full version once the English localization comes out.

Right now I'm not playing anything. I just finished Luigi's Mansion 3, and oh boy, that was a blast! It was a great slow paced game to just sit back and relax while playing. Rarely frustrating, and always rewarding. It's a real gem.
