Hello,

Uhhm.... this is neither a project nor a creation, really.

But, well. Is it me who is missing out on something or do we not have notifications on Jul?

Notifications and basically ways to follow what is happening on certain threads. There probably could be something like watching a thread etc

This would make it really to follow what is happening on threads, respond in a timely manner etc.

So, looking into the possibilities of implementing this for Jul but just to be sure, does this exist?

Not sure whether that was supposed to be a joke, at least the second part but...

Such features should be opt out by default.

If you want the notifications and such, you opt in.

All new posts are currently reported to the IRC/Discord, so you can keep up with threads that way.

There's no in-forum thread notifications outside the latest posts list (and TBH, the activity level nowadays doesn't really warrant it).

Discord/IRC is one of the ways in which you can get notifications but some of us, like me do not really use either IRC or Discord but are frequently on email. Would having a way to keep yourself updated with the forums via email be a bad thing, no. Defintely no.

It is not about the activity but once you post here but get busy with something else only to come back to find 5 day old comments.

This would definitely not happen if there were notifications.

In regards to StapleButter's comment, they dislike practically anything that seems to have been made in the modern Internet era generally due to the way a lot of the people who make new sites using functionality for the sakes of using them...

A notification system would be nice, and as you say, opt-in when needed (like for watched threads should that ever become a thing).

A notification system for Jul would be interesting but unlikely to happen soon as most updates done to Jul are either maintenance or security related.

In the meantime, you can mark certain threads as Favorites, that way you'd only need to click on that page to see if any threads in there have new posts.

Since jul source code is public and on Github, implementing this and making a pull request is the way to go. This is something that should be done soon by me.

Yes, it is indicated that most updates done to Jul are either maintenance or security related but this update is meant to implement fairness in the sense that, if people on IRC/Discord can get updates on forum posts, then why should not people on email?

Thanks a lot for the hint about favourites. It looks great but *still*, this functionality cannot stand in place of notifications but it is indeed great!

I understand the appeal, but as far as I can tell it's against the spirit of Jul. Heck, the FAQ specifically points out that Jul is a place without nagging post notifications.

I think Jul is supposed to be more chill than that. You shouldn't ever feel obligated to come here unless you want to. You should be able to respond to posts on your own schedule, and you should never be interrupted by something else you're doing by a post you may or may not want to read at the moment.

That said, perhaps adding an RSS feed for new posts would be a happy medium? Your RSS client is only as nagging as you want it to be.

Jul definitely looks like a very quiet place where nagging would be totally unacceptable but is convenience against the spirit of Jul.

Opt in notifications would be definitely convenient for at least some. Me included. It is possible a lot of other people would find them valuable, too.

RSS feed would definitely be neat. This is one feature that *needs* to be implemented.

Let us forget about notifications and email in general, would it not be great if it were possible to watch threads?

email notifications (of the strictly opt-in type) have been something i've wanted to do, actually; when i say "no nagging things" i mean stuff like "hey you havent been here whats wrong"

being able to subscribe to a thread or notifications of new pms would be nice

adding an email to your account and verifying it would also allow for things like automated password recovery

it's just more work and I have little time
