Husband has me watching The Orville and I want to hate it a lot more than I do because Seth MacFarlane. But it's kind of charming, I guess. Cozy. Like watching old episodes of Star Trek or Stargate or something, only with rude jokes.

Still, every time MacFarlane is on the screen I get annoyed, so there's that.

I've heard season 2 is better than season 1. Even when season 1 had some low points it was still a better Star Trek than Discovery.

At least this isn't grimdark hard manly men marking hard manly man choices like CBS seems to think sci-fi has to be in the 21st century.

Yeah, I'm enjoying the lighter touch this series has, although I did also enjoy Star Trek Discovery.

But, being of course a Seth MacFarlane thing, sometimes it is juvenile and I get irritated.

So I never... got into OG Star Trek...

*dodges rotten tomatoes and copies of Wall Street Kid being thrown by angry Trekkers*

...I'M SORRY, it just never resonated with me!!

Anyway, I wanted to check out The Orville for a while. I knew it was popular, but what I didn't want was "Star Trek parody with Family Guy-esque jokes." I FINALLY talked my wife into watching it, and I was pleasantly surprised. Yes there's humor, but it seems to take a back seat in favor of the story. We ended up enjoying and went through all of Season 1 then got caught up with S2, and I'm honestly surprised that MacFarlane wrote something that doesn't make me roll my eyes so hard that I see gray matter. Really good show, and I hope they continue with the direction they're taking in S2.

Seth McFarlane is the reason I haven't gone anywhere near this, because I have never liked anything Seth has ever produced (and I love trek, so yeah). So I've given this a very wide berth, so uh it's interesting seeing people comment that it's not awful.

Not even the new version of Cosmos?

I mean, yeah, I know about the sexual assault/harassment charges against DeGrasse-Tyson NOW, but that was one I was fine with.

I get where you're coming from. Aside from just Cosmos (and I guess now The Orville), I'm not a fan of MacFarlane, at least not his animated shows. I can't vouch for his movies, as I've avoided the Ted movies and that one western flick he did because of his track record of not being all that funny.

I've been watching through the series with a friend as it comes to air, and we've been quite enjoying it.

I went into it without really thinking about the context of Seth's other works. It does take a few episodes for the show to figure out what itself is, though.
The first two or three episodes do feel like they're trying to pitch the content to FOX.

So, we're a little bit into Season 2, and my general thoughts are:

* I am now sure I'm never going to stop hating Seth MacFarlane's stupid face and his stupid petty insecure egocentric captain character
* I like Kelly better when she's not doing ex-wifey stuff and being fighty
* I miss the character that just left but guess what I hear that's another thing MacFarlane ruined
* The extremely obvious Discovery "twist" made me so annoyed, like fucking hell MacFarlane have you ever had a fucking original idea in your life I DON'T KNOW WHY I EXPECTED HIM TO START NOW THOUGH SO THE REAL IDIOT IS ME I GUESS

This. For whatever reason MacFarlane actually seems to perform at his best creatively when he's not hogtied down into making lowest common denominator humor.

Like, from everything I've seen him do over the years, I know that he is a talented person. Some of his stuff can really miss the mark, but I also think a lot of his low points, more often than not, has more to do with the fact that Fox essentially owns him and wants him to churn out garbage. Like Family Guy. Or The Cleveland Show. Or Ted 2. It's like he hit the point, when it comes to the Orville, that he fufilled some sort of contractual obligation and now he can make a live action show that doesn't rely so heavily on low-brow humor and can touch on some important topics while still being entertaining.

Kind of like pre-cancellation Family Guy.

There's definitely a thing going on with the show where it feels like he's on the verge of an actual IDEA and then... it's like either he can't help it, or someone insists the show is a comedy, and there's a dumb joke that manages to undermine the drama.

So the season finale aired about last week.

Season 2 was definitely far more consistent in its execution than the first Season. And the more serious focus did help with the show's direction.
