So, my stepfather just brought in his old computer home, and it's old. Two decades old in fact. It's running Windows 7, but it's very clear that it was meant to run with Windows XP. It can be upgraded to 8 (why would anyone do that is beyond me) but it can't run 10. He pretty much considers this computer dead and he's ready to throw it away, but I kinda wanted to keep it, even though I have no idea what to use it for.

- AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @2.0GHz
- ASUS A7V8X-X Motherboard
- 2GB DDR1 RAM
- nVidia GeForce4 MX440 (AGP)
- Seagate 80GB HDD (IDE)
- IBM 20GB HDD (IDE)
- CD Drive (no DVD support!)
- Floppy Drive! yay!

The CPU doesn't support SSE2 or anything above, which is required for most modern browsers. Many programs refuse to install OR run in it. But it does have 3DNow! Does your computer have that? Don't think so!

Also, if I right-click any exectuable and then click "properties", Windows Explorer crashes. Wonderful.

I'm wondering what to do with this computer. It's a shame to just throw it away because it's fully working and nothing seems to be shorting, unlike my old pre-2014 computer which had roughly the same specs, that one was barely alive. Maybe I could install some old operating system or use it to test how managing servers remotely via command-line work, like Debian.

I named it the "Athlonic" (Athlon + Atomic). Obviously it's not going to be a desktop computer anymore, but still, I'm unsure what to do with it. Any suggestions?

Definitely looks the part of a 98/2K/XP machine.

Maybe consider wiping the drive, dropping the original OS on there, instead of 7, and consider using it for retro gaming. That's not too terrible of a graphics card for the time. Not great, but not bad.

You could always get an IDE DVD drive for it too but I doubt that single core 2GHz is going to be able to go incredibly fast with it either. I remember I was -barely- able to make a lesser Pentium III do the same around that time...but you might be surprised.

Only other thing I can think of is a low-spec Linux build for some project.

I would put Windows 8 on there before I left 7 on it--8 doesn't have as many animations and such, so it runs better on old hardware, in my experience.

That said, I would probably just put XP on it. Or maybe even 98 if the drivers are in good order. Would be a pretty solid machine for gaming. You could put a linux distro on there, but the computer you'd be connecting with is probably good enough to run a VM on, so why not do that and save on the electricity? Really, the only use it has is being a cool old machine. Or possibly getting some data off a floppy disk, but how often does that situation come up anymore?

I'd say WinME or XP is the best bet. That 7 install is straining it and also probably broken.

This. Any single-core unit running on Vista and above is asking for trouble with all the queuing that would happen on the processor.

I agree with all of this. I have no idea why they decided to install 7 in it, since it's clear this machine ain't made to run it. Windows 8 would be a good idea for a desktop, but again, this computer is not gonna get any general use out of it anymore probably. It does look like it ran Windows XP for a time, and also it seems like it does have full support for XP and 98 drivers, so I'm probably going to be wiping the drive and installing XP in it. Or maybe both XP and 98, why not?

That's the other thing I was thinking about, since I'm in college, it would be useful to train how to use Linux in a server-like setting (though usually servers are a lot more capable than this but whatever, it's only for testing anyway) mostly via the command line, remotely. Not sure how useful this is for future projects and corporations, but any new knowledge is welcome. I'd most likely install Debian and maybe also put LXDE as an UI just so I could have something to look at when absolutely needed.

Basically, testing for projects and stuff. So yeah. Again, not sure how useful it would be for this but that's my idea. (nothing prevents me from just installing multiple OSs and switching between them with GRUB right?)

Eh, more or less what I said above, plus I never actually tried out a Virtual Machine so I don't know how well it would run on my main computer (which is also a bit old but nowhere as near as this one). I assume that I could run a Windows 98 VM just fine but a Debian one? Uhhhhh...

And if I'd want a more general-purpose Linux, I could just install it on my main computer. I'd mainly use its Linux installation for testing basically.

I might consider the IDE DVD drive for the future, along with buying a better AGP graphics card for it (there's a few good deals I've found online, surprisingly), but for right now I'm not looking to do any upgrades to it. I already wasted a bit too much money making upgrades to my main computer.

You could possibly run a lightweight 32 bit linux distro on it with lxde to get some functionality out of it.

At least, that's the angle I would take with it.

Q4OS is also a good option since its requirements are basically the same as XP.

I've heard about this one before. It says it's based on Debian so actually I might try it out as an alternative for Debian + LXDE. I'd like to see how well it runs and if I could use it as a replacement for Debian, as in, if most Debian software/packages would install in it. I assume I have to install the 'Trinity' version since the 'Plasma' one seems to be KDE and 64-bit only.

I also discovered that apparently the 20GB HDD already has some Linux in it but GRUB doesn't seem to want to boot so it's probably broken. I would say it was Debian 5.x (Lenny) but there's no way for me to know for sure until I install another OS in it.

Something I just realized is that...if this thing only has a CD drive, I wonder how they upgraded it to Windows 7? Must've been through a USB drive or a flash drive or something. Well, either way I have a portable DVD drive at home so hopefully that's enough for the time being.

Current plans for today:
Install Debian + LXDE as the main OS on the 80GB HDD. With Windows XP as a side OS.
Install Q4OS on the 20GB HDD just to test it out, if it works well then I might replace the Debian + LXDE installation with this one.

Well, uh things didn't go quite according to plan but, I posted some pictures of it with Windows XP on the desktop screenshots thread. XP insisted on installing on the 20GB HDD unfortunately, and I have yet to install Debian and Q4OS.

Notes so far:

Severely more stable and faster with XP than 7. Windows 7 really isn't meant for this machine. CPU usage constantly goes to 100% at everything web-related, but surprisingly, the RAM always stays low. I'm kinda impressed at how little RAM XP uses. Windows 7 is very happy to consume more than 700MB minimum. I had to install Firefox 45ESR because 52ESR (the latest version that supports XP) requires SSE2. Welp.

YouTube is non-watchable, but I didn't expect anything else really. Also IE6 cannot browse the web anymore, like at all. You can barely get any text out of it. It was impossible to download another browser through it, so I had to do it through my phone. And then surprise, XP doesn't really understand Android all that well but luckily it was able to find the right drivers for it, so it could at least recognize it as a remove USB device. I would've tried to browse Jul using IE6 but uhhhh...last time I tried to I got automatically IP banned so, not risking it again.

But now that it has its drivers and a few basic programs in it, its pretty much ready to be used for retro-gaming now.

And this motherboard also has its own MIDI synthezier, nice! (go to 1:20)

I guess because I'm younger that most people here, I don't have as much nostalgia towards 95 or 98SE. But XP? Totally. It feels much simpler than 7 in many ways, like the lower amount of settings and the more straight-forward UI. It also has a wizard for basically every task ever. Ah, memories.

There's still the Linux thing missing though. I'll post an update about it once I get it installed and running.

You might want to try out New Moon on the XP partition. It's a fork of Pale Moon/Basilisk that's still updated for XP.

Man, that computer is really similar in specs to the one I use for retro PC gaming.

- Asus K8VSE DX mo'bo
- AMD Athon 64 3200+ CPU @ 2GHz
- 1GB DDR400 RAM
- Vintage 40GB IDE HDD
- Samsung WriteMaster Lightscribe Super Multi DVD Drive
- Sony 52x Ultra Speed CD-ROM Drive
- 3.5" Floppy Drive
- USB 2.0 ports
- RJ45 ethernet
- ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Video Card (AGP)
- Diamond Xtreme Audio 5.1 Surround sound PCI soundcard (CMI8738 clone, with OPL3 soundblaster support, EAX/XEar, MIDI/Gameport)
- Proper drivers to interface with everything for max support

Mine has a triple boot with Windows XP and Windows ME (with Win98 Real Mode DOS hack) installed for the ultimate retro PC, so an XP/ME multi boot should definitely be possible on yours if you wish in the future. The setup has the full benefits of being able to play modernish games and applications on the XP partition, Windows 9x games on ME, and DOS games with the real mode dos hack.

The multi-boot was somewhat tricky to setup. I remember having to use fdisk to format the drive (with large disk support, for FAT32 partitions with a size between 2-40 GB) to use a large portion of the drive for ME, then run setup.exe on the ME install CD with undocumented /is switch to skip setup's running of scandisk. Without the switch, setup would run scandisk surface test during installation, begin "correcting" false positives on the disk, and not complete installation fully. (False scandisk surface test failures had nothing to do with the HDD's health, but the FAT32 format applied for large disk support; skipping it got the installation to work.)

The key to getting the multi-boot setup properly was installing ME first as primary bootable partition (FAT32 with large disk support) then installing Windows XP (NTFS) as secondary, as per this ME/XP dual boot guide. The drive was split in half to 20GB partitions for both OSes. ME can't see the XP partition, but XP can see ME partition. After both partitions were setup, I later on added the Win98 Real Mode DOS hack into the ME partition.

I have no experience with getting a Linux partition to cooperate with older Windows-based multi-boot setups, but the pages here have information at least on properly setting up an XP/Ubuntu multiboot.

So as an update to this old machine: My stepfather needed a computer for himself (one more modern than an Athlon XP), and so he bought some parts and needed the computer case back. Because of that, for like a couple of months now, the Athlonic has just been spare computer parts scattered everywhere. But I just bought a new simple case and a better graphics card for it!

So, either this week or the next one, the Athlonic will be revived! Except this time it won't have the Seagate 80GB HDD (IDE), so I'll just have to deal with 20GB of storage for both XP and Linux. That should prove to be quite an interesting challenge, but I'm certainly up for it! I never bothered installing 98 or ME in it because I don't have much nostalgia for those systems.

After that, I still need to buy a proper IDE DVD drive so I can stop using the CD drive. They're quite cheap, I just need to stop being lazy and actually buy one.

I can imagine it could run 98SE/ME with the processor and amount of RAM - bear in mind ME is the only 9x properly supporting 2GB RAM afaik out of the box - go ahead

XP would work but bear in mind the processor doesn't have SSE2

Oh: disregard my post haha, looks like you got sorted and also I'm glad someone else on the forum replied with recommending ME, it honestly it's just 98SE with some nicer necessities out of the box

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
