I just finished watching Zero Punctuation's review of Super Mario Galaxy. In the middle of it, he brings up a valid point. Will Nintendo ever start a new franchise? I'm not thinking one to take Mario's place, but one to possibly be able to rival Mario's Flagship role.

Obviously, with SMG's scores ranging around 98%, we can see Mario is going strong. Even then, what if Nintendo were to create a new franchise. What would it be based on?
I keep trying to look at Nintendo's new ideas coming from the DS and Wii but they seem to be fun, not worthy of a sequel, games.

Why would they need one? They have Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon to name a few already.

Nintendo has done one thing: keeping games fun.

SURE to many these games may seem the same, but so was Mario Galaxy to Mario 64. Unlike other game franchises they don't whore out their franchises in three game releases in about three years (I'm looking at you, Jak, Ratchet, and Sly, along with whatever else did the same thing). They try to take what makes their franchises good and just builds upon that while putting in some fun time in between said releases (all the Mario games up until Galaxy have been fun but face it those were filler).

They don't need new franchises, and even when they do make a new one they deem one game is worthy enough. Why do you think there aren't many Earthbound games? Do they need more? Sin & Punishment? Advance Wars is even going a new route as it is despite the other Advance Wars plotlines only getting 3 games with an ending on AWDS that could mean more war later on.

I say if Nintendo did something different, they would know the people wouldn't want it. Look at Brawl as it is. Sakurai is making a fun game as it is and those that are complaining are complaining because it is too much a change from the previous game despite this being yet another game in the Smash Bros franchise taking what made it fun to begin with (beating the shit out of Nintendo characters) and expanding upon the previous game.

And you act as though Nintendo is the only one that does this. Halo did the same thing. The 360 is primarily centered around the same type of games. Konami whores out Metal Gear and the Bemani section of Konami keeps sending out waves of DDR and IIDX (already on its 15th mix) out while NOW actually releasing a new franchise.

Don't forget Animal Crossing! Even though there is only two games and there is almost no news on the one for the Wii besides that it is being made, Isn't it still sort of a franchise? It was very well received!

Nintendo, by my experience, isn't really a risk-taker so doing something like that would be well out of their personality. That's why the only games they seem to have are around the set franchises that have worked for them and have for years and years and sometimes decades. That's why you'll see regurgitated sequels, more often than not, on the system than something new.

They know how to make their money and other consoles and industries that revolve around them know how to make theirs; they appeal to their own audiences and fanboys/girls.

The Nintendo DS?
Sure they had the fall-back of "It's not the new gameboy" however it was still a risk. The same could be said for the wii, even the name was laughed at for ages.

I agree with what cpubasic said, Nintendo keeps games fun. Though sometimes I want to shoot them when I am stuck on a level. (A certain coin-map for brawl Galaxy comes to mind). Though, I just may be a fan talking.

The Nintendo DS?...

A second screen...?

That's like saying a PC's taking a risk by adding an extended desktop to its mix.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying Nintendo's bad or anything (hell, look at my avatar to start among many things I've done with Super Nintendo I idolize) but I just know how far they want to reach when it comes to their own games. I wasn't really saying hardware as an example more than games though.

Nintendo reduced their risk by keeping backwards compatibility. Even if the system's games sucked, you could still get one to use as a GBA/GameCube.

Starting new franchises (or even something different) is a risk because it's an unknown game. I mean, sure, you could create the best game ever, but outside of people who check game ratings, who would know it was the best? Familiarity counts for a lot when you buy things.

I'd think it would be harder for a company to create a successful franchise the further into the company's lifespan it is. To me it seems easier for a newly formed company to create a good game and them decide to expand on it more and more, because the player will recognize the sequels since they played the original game when there was little else to choose from.

In Nintendo's case, the have many successful franchises already and most are household video game names like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Kirby, Smash Bros and plenty more. Introducing a new one is harder because that game has to get past many gamers' fallacy to only buy games from series they know and love. I hate to say it, but almost every Gamecube game I own is from an established franchise except for maybe two. I missed out on other really good games simply because I didn't know about them or simply passed them up for other well known games.
