The problem for me with leaving twitter is that no one else will. And beyond leaving, will -not- make themselves consistently available through other means no matter how much I beg them. I don't know where this distrust of anything but 2 proprietary platforms came from, but it is immensely frustrating.

um, I never really got to talk to anyone through Twitter

so leaving Twitter is a lot easier for me because I technically haven't really been using it for anything

yay!

i don't think it's a problem of distrust, per se, i think it's just that twitter just... reinforces certain habits and compulsions that make any other platform harder to use

it's a lot harder to summon the executive energy to want to use anything other than twitter when twitter literally conditions you to feel constantly rewarded for no effort at all. when you're constantly being streamed the most addictive shit alongside the worst shit imaginable it's really easy to just feel drained constantly, esp if you already struggle with executive dysfunction (like i do)

and like, i don't wanna be some boomer that's like "haha kids rely too much on technology to connect them together here's my political cartoon about it" or whatever. i think online communication and human connection are important, you know, but maybe having peoples' art, funny/cute jokes, and potentially "viral" content exploited as basically a constant dopamine stream to keep people hooked into this singular monolithic entity isn't healthy... it is literally addictive

spaces that are *ours* don't feel like they're populated with the things we create anymore, and the things we create only seem to exist on spaces that aren't ours, which should be disturbing

anyway i've found the only way i could get myself to quit twitter is to just cut myself off entirely. it's frustrating bc i want to be the kind of person that uses it a "reasonable amount" but i genuinely do not think i can

Yeah, art is the other big reason I don't just pack up (permanently anyway). Half of the SideM artists I follow don't even post to pixiv -- same for HxH. I wish I'd been more appreciative of what I had 10-15 years ago before all this shit started. Not that I could have done anything, probably.

Uh, oops. I guess I just forgot to post again. I don't know what it is, forums used to be such a big deal for me, but now I'm just tired all the time and don't post anything.

this is one reason I am super annoyed that I can't find some kind of social art gallery open source thingy so I can self-host and have something that is mine, but is also connected with stuff by my friends and artists I find inspiring like why is this not a thing why do I have to depend on instagram or deviantart or twitter or tumblr for somewhere to host my art crap in a social way? lkjfsdajhk

i like mastodon for art and I am keen for pixelfed I guess?

KawaiiImoto-e
the cute princess

Let's have a good time together!

At least for me, Twitter is less cancer than Facebook.

I know, I don't need to apologize for my lack of posts, but I still have the urge to do so. Because shortly after I became active on this boards again, I began a new hobby, which is not represented here.

But I always had a tab open for this board. And lurk around to see what you guys post.

Also, the slower pace allows to browse infrequent and at my leasure.

oh, god, don't get me started on facebook

that horrible website turns people into zombies. my sister called it the "walmart of the internet" once and i think she was onto something

i've had to slowly watch my parents get more and more intellectually lazy bc they just parrot facebook memes and vox links or whatever. they're literally turning into the liberal version of maga boomers

i used to think it was just an age thing but... i don't think getting older inherently makes you more intellectually lazy, given that "smart old people" are a thing that occasionally exists. but it really does feel like a lot of older people fall into patterns of not challenging themselves or thinking about things in a more active way (like young people sometimes do, you know), and facebook just encourages that

if i were a web hacker genius with infinite free time i'd make this happen. some mastodon-ish tumblr thing, or something

Ageing is not fucking pretty. The older we get the more our brains get fucked up by all our lifestyle choices over the rest of our lives. Then we're more susceptible to systems that game us.

From what I've been reading, lack of sleep and exercise in particular seem to reeeaallly fuck over the brain later on.

Hi, it me, Tarale, I'm fun at parties

I'd love to see something with a bit of flickr (or heck, even deviantart) thrown in, like, some effort put in to preserve the quality of images and display it appealingly as well as having decent browsable galleries. I don't like the way either Instagram or Tumblr do this. But I also do not know how to make the internet *waves hands around vaguely* do things

Sleep is difficult as more and more of life gets taken over by things that are utterly foreign to...well, just about anyone, honestly. Exercise I've been doing much better about, and had almost immediate mental benefits in consequence.

Aging is horrific though, and it's a shit realization that so many people are too compromised to do or be very much meaningful in the latter half of their life. Bodies really aren't fit for habitation, I don't think.

i've been sleeping a little better than usual at least, not sleeping 12 hours a day and not changing my sleep schedule constantly anymore

exercise otoh i suck at bc that requires commitment and it scares me

I'd take just about any robot body as long it let me be in something like steady state -- give me that Jameson thing from Ghost in the Shell SAC that's just a glorified metal box, even. Metal box sounds pretty good.

Biking is the most agreeable form of exercise I've found, because you go so fast that it just turns into exploration if you cover any real distance. Swimming second for that feeling of severed connection with the world I think.

I swim, and I like that (I mean, not right NOW but wow that was a hard set). I try to work in little HIIT exercises or yoga from YouTube videos when I can. But I always feel like I have to *force* myself to do it. I do feel better during and after it.

The fun thing about sleep and the brain is that sleep also gets worse for various reasons as we age, and oh yeah, just for fun that speeds cognitive decline. But generally, before that starts to kick in, try to get your 8 hours if at all possible. Speaking of, I should head off in a minute.

But yeah, uh, we're um. We're not good at actually being *healthy* in our bodies while living longer lives. It's great. Isn't existence fucking wonderful aaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAA

Yeah, it's frustrating. I try to prioritize the other active places I still have access to, but people often just don't put meaningful things there anymore.

Before I really started using Twitter about last year I just surfed Reddit endlessly instead. Not that Twitter is good, but I consider it better than Reddit. So much of Reddit is filled with "hate bait" where people get enraged at other people for fun I guess? and I don't get the appeal of that. Plus the whole thing's just sort of an anonymous blob where you never get to know anyone.

Twitter's bad because it likes to wave numbers in your face and shove content at you until you collapse, but at least you can kind of curate your feed and have meaningful relationships with people? Although even then I mostly just end up lurking because coming up with content to post is hard. But besides chatrooms and Mastodon and the odd internet forum like this there's not a whole lot of places to get to know people on the internet.

Twitter has had two bad things in it for me:

01. being bored ==> opening twitter because they have wired my mind to go to it for dopamine ==> reading about bad stuff happening and being sad about it ==> closing app ==> repeat
02. i have just thought of a wonderful opinion. a cunning statement. this is really where i will raise the bar. i must tweet this immediately. my 24 followers will think i am great for what i am about to say on the internet. they will be so proud.

It was largely unhealthy for me so I deleted it and never went back. Oldschool forums are actually social and not just consumption, unless you just lurk.

As for Mastodon, it's good that it's decentralized and free, but bad because I get the same symptoms I do from Twitter. Stream of information, awkward communication mechanics, feeling the need to broadcast everything I think.
