yeah... it sucks. this is like the last place online where i feel comfortable and cozy, somehow, but i don't really know how to get it active again because people just don't gravitate towards forums anymore. i've tried inviting friends and they just don't seem terribly interested in the place. it's frustrating, especially given how fucking unhealthy and toxifying social media can get.

one other thing is that a lot of the people that came over during the kinda 2018 activity boom sorta just disappeared. activity tends to reverberate, i've noticed — the more active a place is, the more active it'll stay — but i think a lot of them sorta just got scared off or stopped checking the place. (there's a few people in the back of my head that i remember being more active that i just kinda miss)

(i will say SC that you're one of the few people that came over during that boom that's managed to stick around — which is totally cool and i really appreciate it!)

you might try checking out the discord if you haven't already? i don't really hang out on discord much these days, but i remember it being pretty active last i was on it...

It feels like a broader Internet thing - I've noticed everyone's moved over to Discord servers, or Telegram rooms.

That kind of retreat is sad. Are people really so much shittier now public communities aren't viable in the same way? Not that I'm good at evaluating such things... It just sucks having to play endless status games just for the privilege of talking to people you were barely acquainted with in the first place. I liked being able to drift around forums or IRC or whatever until I got to know the place a little.

The Jul discord is not exactly the most public of discords, but I wholly understand the anxiety of joining or talking in one. Maybe try lurking for a bit and see if you get more comfortable with it!

If not then, well, the forums will always be here still. Even if we're quiet, we're still here!

I prefer crickets myself, something about tumbleweeds creeps me out a little.

A few things:
-I know many of the new peeps from the activity boom came from Mastodon, and I only know of Chalcedony having stuck around. Guessing that it's partially an issue of other places demanding attention a lot more, but I wouldn't be surprised if some people don't care or can't fit Jul into things.

Aside: I tend to eventually drop off activity from every discord server I'm in. It's people talking a lot and I can't possibly keep up (even if I select only a few channels to do so in) and/or a lack of interest in what's being discussed.

-I guess people don't know how to use forums that effectively anymore? Including me, but then I never learned in the first place. Similar to how I occasionally see people say they don't know how to talk "normally" with people anymore. I don't want to construe social media as some sort of "social rot" or something, but the way people talk about the olden days(tm) makes it sound sometimes that way.

I really want to help keep this place alive, just I don't really come up with good ideas. I am probably having too high ideas of what constitutes a good topic on here. Like, if it's not something (seemingly) profound or unique then it's not goo enough, and if it's a long rant or something I'm inclined to take it do my journal which I don't do either. (Of course I can only do so much on my own as well... )

Well, I'm trying to make an effort to post more. I'm just not very good at... conversation. I'm not good at it in person either so that's not new.

I'm still around. I've just been preoccupied with things outside my usual internet presence lately. I recently finished grad school and got my teaching certification after finishing student teaching. Working full time in a job where I don't sit in front of a computer all day definitely restricts my ability to be around much during the school year. In between that and trying to maintain a relationship and my in-person friendships, it can be hard to find the time.

With that said, I've never been very good at maintaining my involvement in online communities anyway. I tend to be a transient lurker at best. I'm in over a dozen discord servers and multiple IRC networks and channels, but I tend not to say much in any of them. It's always been a little overwhelming; even one discord server can be hard to keep up with. It's kind of a miracle I've been around here for *checks watch* over 13 years now. I guess, after everything, this still feels like my home as far as online communities go.

Yeah, home's how I've always described Jul, you know? Home on the internet. The curse's a bit that as we mature, we pay more attention to real life relationships and there's less need for Jul. Also who of us even plays online multiplayer games any more? I'm having a sick week, and it's the first time I've seriously played a game this year, and I chose Ace Attorney, not Minecraft.
However, there's still magic in Jul and in having long-standing online friends who different lives far away. Let's just keep it up!

i'll just say this, Jul is my anti-scroll. yeah there's a lot going on in my life, there are people in my life that aren't on Jul, so forth, but it's a place where i can read things and not be in an infinite scroll. i've in general have lost the compulsion to infinite scroll anyway tho, but yeah Jul is the place to go for my mind-less surfing needs.

α“Being in an infinite scroll” sounds like a good metaphor for being spellbound by attention-grabbing trickery…

I'm kinda glad for forums and the lack of infinite scroll. It's a nicely defined start and end point to whatever you're doing. It ends.

I guess I started to understand more about what Xkeeper meant some time ago. It's nice to be able to tackle things at your own pace rather than being shoved content outta every corner of everywhere. This place has content that ends when there's no more discussion to read, it doesn't find stuff to try and keep your eyes on the screen, or cater to the most advertisement-heavy content, or just keep generating stuff from limbo to give for you to read/watch.

Even if things are slow sometimes, talking a bit in here feels a lot better than talking a lot in, say, Twitter for example. In a way that's what makes this place better. If things get busy then I can always just come back whenever I want to, it doesn't feel overwhelming and it doesn't feel like if I miss something then suddenly I'm way behind.

The only difficult part is that, writing and reading so much stuff takes time and when things are busy...well

I've been in the process of slowly leaving some places that I'm not interested in anymore or don't contribute to frequently (not including this one of course, this is almost an internet home to me now). I'm noticing I'm trying to do too many things at once and it's not working well. Sometimes it's better to take a step back and simplify your life.

Twitter today is a prime example of how busy timelines can get. With a forum like this I don't need to be constantly checking it to not miss out on anything.

βPerhaps also because you've got actual read/unread markers, at least at the thread level.

(I was just watching Stargate earlier, and now I'm imagining “Thread Level Foxtrot Alpha 6”, halp)

it's hard to rip myself away from my literal twitter addiction (like almost certainly actual literal).
idk how i would even begin to do so.
twitter feeds perfectly into patterns of addiction that people with adhd and personality disorders are vulnerable to.

also it's hard to write longform posts on mobile and i rarely feel like pulling out my laptop.
maybe once i get a new one...
