I bought a whole bunch of things! Mostly some jeans that fit now I've lost weight. Also a Time Timer (visually shows time running out), and some "hickies" laces, which has revealed that my shoelaces were actually kind of hurting me.

I also bought a clock that teaches kids how to tell the time, and I'm waiting for that to arrive, but I'm quite excited about it.

Julbench3.1  94% full, 55K free, 824K in use
I did a thing, a thing that was probably a dumb idea, and bought a pretty beat up Lenovo ThinkPad T400 at a flea market for a pretty cheap price!

More specifically, it has a Core 2 Duo P8700 CPU at 2.53 GHz, now 2 GB of DDR3 RAM (came with none), an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 with 256 MB RAM, now a 40 GB HDD (also came with none; maybe to be replaced by an SSD, but it's alright for now), a CD- and DVD-RW drive, a 14.1" TFT display with a 1440x900 resolution, and it's now running Debian 9.8 (stretch) with MATE as the Desktop Environment.

What's wrong with it, tho... well, the chassis seems to be slightly bent, the case is in pretty bad shape, with some cracks and such, two of the three USB ports are broken (the plastic dividers are gone, a common issue with these machines), two keycaps are missing, there's no battery whatsoever (might get one someday), several screws are missing (might get those too), the screen has a few small imperfections, and the HDD bracket and cover are missing, so the drive is currently held in place by a piece of cardboard (replacements on the way from China).

Yeah, it'll never be a good looker again, that'll require basically a whole new system, plus some things like the bad USB ports aren't fixable properly without considerable effort. Still, I... dunno why but I kinda like her? Meaning "tomoko", named after the Tomoko from Watamote - I think the name fits somehow.

Anyway, this'll be some sort of machine for experimentation, for "learning" Linux, things like that. Not sure how much I'll actually do with it, but I just couldn't help but...feel sorry for it when I saw it at that flea market, thinking it deserves better than, dunno, getting scrapped for parts, or worse, get trashed outright?

(Typed in Firefox on Debian on tomoko~)

Got myself a refurbished Kobo Touch e-reader, it just came in today The model's around 8 years old (wow), but e-readers don't really get obsolete in the same way that phones and tablets do, and this thing still works fine for everything I need it for

Got a Retro-Bit USB Saturn controller (the slate grey kind since I'm a sucker for translucent electronics) and it feels great. Unfortunately mednafen won't recognize all the inputs in either directinput or xinput mode, but Sonic Mania works perfectly.

I flipped them the bird.

omg yes!! i appreciate that there's still room for this kind of computer, even if only in japan. it's so annoying seeing ports and jacks and drives and upgradability disappear from every other laptop the past decade—the latest things are glorified tablets with keyboards. it's just... unhealthy! anyway yeah this looks rad! and a circular trackpad looks so... different!

yeah i appreciate this series a lot. although strangely after i got it and used it for a bit, i started using my RZ5 again, which is the netbook/tablet version of the device (with a 10.1" screen). the reason for this is because it's a capable computer on its own right that fits within my mini-backpack perfectly. i guess i use both fairly equally, one for editing at home and another for more portable travel as a tablet.

they continue to make models in both series using the same design, which has largely remained unchanged since it first came out as the Panasonic CF-R1 in 2003:

my theory as to why we get to enjoy such devices is they are perhaps popular in Japan in offices, who will order them en masse and probably get discounts on them somehow. otherwise, they are expensive—the R1 was $1,850 in 2003 ($2,569 today adjusted for inflation). meanwhile the current CF-SV8 model is $3,435.

(before anyone asks, i got both of mine used and for much, much cheaper than this. also mine is from 2015.)

I bought a bike! It's an old red Specialized Allez Comp, 58cm with 105, from the days of downtube shifters. Condition is absolutely pristine -- new Specialized seat and mavic wheels. I am ecstatic -- I had hours left to get transportation for my new job.

i got a fender telecaster last week

and by fender caster, i mean "squier bullet telecaster" i'm poor geez. but hey! it sounds good. the build quality seems... mostly... pretty good. the tone knob is a little weird like there's a little bit of wood left over and maybe they didn't drill it perfectly and there's a couple of... red paint spots? or something. just tiny ones maybe the size of an ant. but other than that it seems good so far

i ended up opting for surf green but part of me wishes i'd gotten the butterscotch blonde since that's the "standard" tele color and that one has a black pick guard. the red one would have been cool as shit but the one i found was fucken... sparkly and shit which is too glam for me

but god it sounds amazing oh my god. i can hear so many guitar tones i heard growing up and i love the twangy bridge pickup that every 90s indie band used and the jonny greenwood ass neck pickup and it's just, it feels so good to play. it's dumb but i just love playing it and i've been playing it maybe ~6 hours a day on average for the past week

i've been playing acoustic guitar in a dumb/strummy/casual ass way for the last 8 years now or something but this feels like the first time i've actually put effort into learning guitar? i suck really really bad but i'm really determined to get better

more than anything though my goal is to become this anime girl who also has a telecaster. now that is some fucking goals right there

(this post was always here, shush)

Julbench3.1  94% full, 55K free, 824K in use
Got 1) more bits and pieces for modding my Game Boy Color, and 2) volume 6 of the Yurucamp / Laid-Back Camp manga.

Progressing with number one now requires me waiting until the "main event" is in stock at the online store I want to order from - a backlit LCD replacement kit, specifically the one by BennVenn, from a UK seller. The batch in question should become available in late June, so it'll be another couple weeks of waiting until I can place an order...

Number two, once again, makes me think that I want to go camping again. It's been so long since I did, last time was almost 20 years ago, but I still have very fond memories of those times. Plus, the manga's been giving me ideas for trying new things too, like doing winter camping. Back then, we always went in the summer, so that would be a pretty different experience...

HELL YEAH

when affordable, i highly recommend dash cams if you have a car

i have front-facing and rear ones. already caught one dude backing into my car (no damage), left a laminated, passive aggressive note on his car which he read and approached me later to apologize

also i hardwired them to my car's fuse boxes--into fuses that are constantly reading voltage so these cameras are always on. they power off if the 12v battery reaches too low a voltage (11.5 i think?)

Exactly two weeks ago, my dad got me a Google Pixel 3A, replacing my old iPhone 5S.
During the time that I had owned it, my parents also got me a screen protector and case, both specially designed for it, and now I'm all set with my new phone.

i...have a new laptop?
somehow?
its still kind of surreal to me

it's an acer predator helios 300
supposedly a "mid-range" model
but it has a fuckin i7 and a gtx1060 in it

im so used to having hand me downs and busted old things,
that having something like this, all fancy and shiny,
and relatively new (it's a refurbished model)
feels like a trick or a prank or something,
like "haha just kidding you cant have this, youre too poor!"
and itll just get taken away

but, i customized it with a bunch of cute stickers
its mine now. im never letting go
