Came out in January for consoles, and August for PC. A general thread for the game!

despite having played it on and off since launch, i've just now started to get some Augments since Behemoth has been a persistent issue. i've been mindful to get all the event-exclusive and season-exclusive armors as they come out, sans the archtempered armors and extreme behemoth (though that may change soon now that i feel better equipped for archtempereds). here's hoping that the second USJ event comes to Xbone with the autumn festival!

another point of topic, what sort of weapons do you use? i've set a challenge for myself to use only dual blades except a) when helping others with a quest i've already done or b) doing an arena challenge that doesn't have them. in Double Cross and 4U i've been using and enjoying long blade, and i hope to branch out into a bunch of other weapons soon in World, but man there's just something about DB that i like

also, deviljho just got released yesterday for PC players! if they keep bringing over update monsters around once a month then PC should be caught up with console around the start of the new year (assuming the console update cycle starts to slow down - they've mentioned an upcoming patch to fix a bug with a Kinsect making Kulve Taroth armor appear as owned, but no official news on new monsters yet)

an hour ago, the information for the Autumn Festival went up, and the exclusive armor looks pretty neat:

runs from september 21st to october 4th. most of the events including extreme behemoth are back as well as kulve taroth. both USJ quests are listed as PS4 exclusive, but we'll see how true that ends up. also of note is that apparently the blossom layered armor will still be obtainable from Gajalaka Outbreak according to the quest description - this might mean that the spring bug armor will also still be gettable from the Vespoid Infestation quest.

also, no news yet on what the Festival will bring to PC, since their event calendar only shows two weeks instead of console's three.

Monster Hunter World! Can't believe my last post was almost 7 months ago saying I had been playing MHW, haha. Sadly I'm a PS4 player, and for the most part I've been soloing stuff because of the difficulty scaling making soloing way easier than grouping up with one or two friends.

what sort of weapons do you use?

I was first introduced to the series through friends in my college anime club, when they were doing group hunts in MH3U (3DS), so after reading the 3DS demo's manual and looking up info on the weapons and general gameplay I decided I should
1) pick one weapon of each damage type (cutting, blunt, shot);
2) prioritize mobile weapons.
As a result, I settled on Dual Blades, Hunting Horn, and Bow, respectively.

...and, uh, I basically haven't bothered to experiment with other weapons since then.

I've used other weapons in arena quests when none of the three were an option, and occasionally I made other weapon sets to farm specific difficult things (HBG to farm Goldbeard with the underwater siege glitch in 3U, Eldaora's Hornet to farm 140 Kushala in 4U, IG to farm White Fatalis in 4U, ...), and of course Prowler is kinda required to use in Generations, but for the most part I really stuck to those three (despite kinda neglecting HH...).

Compared to previous games, World is... weird. I kinda agree when people describe it as more of an action game compared to previous games' more deliberate and slow combat. As a DB main, going from World (attacking in archdemon mode is rarely useful, you can chain Demon Flurries and change direction easily, you can dash in any direction, you can go crazy with sliding attacks into Heavenly Blade Dance) to Generations Ultimate (demon mode drains stamina too quickly so stick to Archdemon unless you want to refill the gauge, you can chain Demon Flurries but are stuck going in the same direction, you can only dash straight forwards/sideways) felt really noticeable...
but uh, I feel like Bow really exemplifies the change. Going from "only shoot at charge level 3/4 and then power shot" slow gameplay to "get right up to the enemy and spread->rapid->rapid->rapid->spread and dash->rapid->spread repeatedly" non-stop action was a super-harsh change, it was basically a whole new weapon. Like, sure, it's super fun, but if you were to compare a usual World bow run against Kirin to a Generations bow run...

Honestly, as a DB main, with Behemoth my best DB advice is to, uh, probably switch weapon, or otherwise find a good group with a reliable tank.

I spent probably two days on and off trying to solo Behemoth when the update first hit consoles, first with DBs once a JPN player recorded a 20-ish minute speedrun, and then with Bow (once I realized that with my skill level DBs were way too short-ranged to be able to have enough DPS to finish the quest while still playing safe enough to not triple-cart), but even after all that effort the furthest I managed to reach was... timing out on the 35-minute quest timer while in the very last area.

In the end a friend finally managed to join me and we effortlessly duo'd Behemoth thanks to the extra DPS.
If you still want to stick to DBs, this was the DB set I made. Without the Azure Starlord waist I could only get Evade Extender 3, though as it turns out the Rath Soul waist's Windproof 2 was actually kinda useful for the tailwhip's wind pressure.

I put up two runs of Extreme Behemoth if you wanted to reference those, but for EX especially I'd say the key is having a super-competent group, and specifically a really reliable enmity-gathering tank. If a shield-HBG or whatever can shotgun Behemoth's face to prevent random Meteors and Charybdis-spam, and then stay against a wall while the rest of us concentrate on destroying Behemoth's forearms (and optionally with an active healer with Wide-Range so that the other players don't need to interrupt tanking/DPS), then the non-tank hunters shouldn't really be getting hit, let alone carting, at which point it's just a test of how reliable every hunter is.

Honestly, once you have a good group, it's a super-fun fight, incredibly satisfying to finally clear. I did it twice, but honestly if my friends hadn't mostly moved on from the game and the quest gave better rewards, I wouldn't have minded farming it as a late-postgame super-challenging super-rewarding farming quest. Gimme a dozen Hero Streamstones per run, game!

God, finally, access to the second USJ quest's Azure Starlord armor! Sure was annoying trying to make optimal sets without those extra Crit Element pieces.

as far as Behemoth goes, i can usually take hits from him (i always attack his back legs when possible, so there's not much that reliably can) and don't cart in most of the 4-person attempts i've done - though i recognize that i'm not exactly a DPS either, so i've relegated myself to meme-wiggler-support-who-also-attacks-sometimes duty.

i've gotten to phase four quite a few times, and i've never hit the clock - it's always the ecliptic meteor that seals the loss. i do take the blame for one of the slayed-while-simultaneusly-triple-carted because i put a comet up against a wall accidentally, though.

also i usually like to duck behind the comets just cuz, but sometimes it makes me misinput. still clutched it though, somehow.

also i haven't tried forming up a group myself yet, i just search for SOSes or search for hub sessions that have a focus of Behemoth - this is largely due to me just not knowing anyone who still plays it on xbone

also dang my hyphen usage really went through the roof on this post

mosswine mask and faux feline cosmetic armors coming tomorrow, along with USJ part 2 for xbone players. there's also mention of a new "fluffy" low-rank Dual Blades weapon. the AT Kushala event has been extended through the festival, and the Gajalaka Outbreak event now mentions a Gajalaka set for palicoes.

still no word on if/when PC will get a festival. they got an update yesterday for improved mouse options, but people still seem upset that it doesn't support ultrawide monitors..?

been a few months!

AT Kulve Taroth is currently going on, with some behavioural tweaks and a new phase that gives new "rainbow" (even though it's just sky blue) raid drops labelled as Incandescent Weapons, which may get appraised into new Kjarr variants of the same ol KT weapons. The new Gamma armor has a lot of nice skills on it though, unfortunate that it takes so much materials...

coming up next month is the Appreciation Festival to celebrate the launch anniversary, rocking a snazzy suit (and it looks like the cosmetic armor might be the same this time?) as well as advertising the return of past Festival quests

Also coming up in the spring months is the Witcher 3 crossover event, the Monster Hunter series 15th anniversary, and AT Nergigante, then no more major content until.....

the Iceborne expansion comes out next fall! who's excited for nargacuga? lagombi? bologna? jam cloth? i find it kinda neat that the snow biome is an endgame/postgame area now instead of like, second or third. I wonder if they'll add the crafting ingredient for hot drinks to like, wildspire wastes instead of just the biome it's required in (like the chillshrooms!!)? But yeah, new biomes (plural!), monsters, equipment (oh boy here come more mantles i'll never use), "moves" (might just be gestures), and a new quest ranks. continues the story past the end of the base game.

and as for PC, they get the FFXIV crossover today and AT Teostra in a couple weeks. they still have a bit to catch up on, but it seems to be a nice pace. Iceborne is coming to PC as well, but it's unclear if they plan a simultaneous release with consoles.

I'm so sad that playing online on PS4 requires PS+, because doing Kulve Taroth sieges is probably some of the most fun I've had with Monster Hunter World, and a more difficult KT plus neat new weapons with build-in Critical Element sounds like a fun time...

Since I've been busy with university and haven't been playing, during the last festival I ended up catching up on some of the event quests that I skipped — by which I mean doing one run of 2x T.Jho, two runs of AT Luna, and a bunch of AT Zorah. Having a more challenging Zorah Magdaros that forces you to actually engage with the mechanics of the quest (fight away Nergigante, protect the barrier, etc.) is... surprisingly great? Regular Zorah was trivially boring but AT Zorah is fun enough that I'd probably enjoy farming it, if I had any need for more streamstones.

I know nothing about The Witcher and Geralt and stuff (just like how I had very minimal FF XIV knowledge for the Behemoth update) so that'll be interesting to see!

A G-rank update is gonna be pretty weird given the kinds of broken gear (ex: Drachen armor, Temporal Mantle) and upgrades (ex: health augment) we can currently get, and I'm kinda scared they're going to remove access to that stuff (to be re-unlocked later in G-rank) and/or totally trivialize it with even more broken stuff. This is the first time that 'postgame' gear like this is being obsoleted, right? I don't think the original MH4 had honing or crazy relics like MH4U did...

i totally agree that AT zorah is way more fun and interesting than regular ol zorah (plus it's like the easiest way to get augment stones that i still need, heh)

if Iceborne was a seperate release that wasn't multiplayer-compatible with MHW, i'd understand if they changed when certain skills and quests can be obtained, but i really don't think they'd lock things that are already obtainable behind a new paid add-on, that'd really upset people (esp. considering the amount of people new to the series with this game). I'm really hoping they do try to make at least some of the earlier stuff for iceborne on par with things like the temporal mantle, give some variety, but i don't mind if they get even more busted if they keep making monsters more difficult (i, uh, still have difficulty with most of the ATs...)

and uh, i'm not familiar enough with the older games (or at least the endgames of them) to be able to answer that last question

EDIT: looks like a new year's event got announced today too - no details just yet, but it's only available for 24 hours from the 31st to the 1st

The Witcher 3 collaboration has since come out! A repeatable special assignment as Geralt with a bunch of great dialog and a neat new monster (the Leshen)!

...as well as an EX Behemoth-style super-difficult limited-time event quest against an Ancient Leshen with a bunch of unique rewards.

Hm. I know I'm repeating myself here, but I just realized that I haven't really been satisfied with the three new post-release monsters (Kulve Taroth, Behemoth, Ancient Leshen), since all of them lack single-player scaling... which means that players on PS4 without PS+ (like me) can either struggle to solo it for a week, or simply can't experience the fight at all. Back when I did have PS+ I spent a few days trying to solo Behemoth before being helped out by a friend, and then thankfully managed to clear EX Behemoth before PS+ ran out, and I farmed a bunch of Kulve Taroth when she was new and really enjoyed it but now Arch-Tempered Kulve Taroth is a thing and soloing AT KT means spending 3 hours slowly grinding up pursuit level to the max just to have a chance of finishing the quest solo (so dozens of great new weapons are basically unavailable to me)...

The base Leshen itself was really fun since it was single-player-only and a simple intro to the monster, but I spent the last week grinding attempts at Ancient Leshen and finally after a week had only four over-40-minute victories under my belt (enough to craft all the usable gear), but for some reason they decided to give this limited-time event monster a pin attack that's inescapable without the help of other players (basically punishing solo players only), plus a 1% gem-equivalent item which you need multiple of to get all the new cosmetic stuff — and of course I still have zero...

Arch-Tempered events have been pretty fun, and to be honest I think the changes to Zorah Magdaros and Xeno'jiiva for the AT events have been really cool, but I'm starting to rethink whether I really want to get Iceborne if the expansion's challenges will all end up being multiplayer-focused stuff too.

I really enjoyed the special investigation quest, might have to play a Witcher game at some point.... but monsters like Extremoth and Ancient Leshen i think i'll keep holding off on until i've run out of other things to do. Still haven't slayed the investigation Behemoth!!

But yeah, the AT monsters have been a solid experience for me once i've realised 1) i do better at them solo, and 2) making an armor set revolving around each elder dragon is a Good Idea. As i've mentioned before, World is the first MonHun i've played far into, and i'm still learning how to adapt to lategame play. I missed the AT Kirin cycle last week, but this week i've now gotten all the AT Vaal Hazak tickets i'll need.

Speaking of, if they plan on cycling through each AT monster again before unleashing AT Nergi, then we're looking at April 25th for it (and possibly this year's Spring Blossom Festival? they did confirm that they're yearly, right??)

also also, yesterday was monster hunter's 15th birthday! the US site lets you download a wallpaper with the flagship monster of each game, while the JP site has a lot of neat stuff on it.

Yep yep, it's easy to be complacent and just reuse older generic sets once you're experienced enough, but Arch-Tempered monsters are definitely challenging enough that you'd want to add in some more defensive measures; Health Boost 3 for easy 33% more tankiness is basically required, but I've added Earplugs 5 for Lunastra, and even Tremor Res 3 + Heat Guard for AT Xeno. World is kinda unique in that the event challenge quests (ie., AT monsters) actually have all-new moves and stuff, as opposed to just increasing damage and health and whatever, so in that respect it's a pretty interesting endgame... if it weren't for the fact that events cycle in and out.

In any case, they're a fun excuse to cook up more armor sets (and save them in the hundreds of slots), for example with the new Zireael beating out Diablos Clubs as the best non-elemental DBs I whipped this up for Arch-Tempered Nergigante!

Iunno what they're gonna do for the AT schedule when there's stuff like AT Kulve Taroth and Extreme Behemoth and Ancient Leshen that may or may not count, but yeah expecting something for the rerun festival is probably a safe bet (and also is a good time for you to catch up on the missed AT Kirin!). Shame there probably won't be much new after that until Iceborne late this year, but whatever, getting 460+ hours before the expansion is pretty good, haha.

i'm actually a bit curious about how much defense boost and extra health is optimal given X amount of slots, but i haven't really tried looking up the multipliers or really any sort of hard data taken from the game

for AT Van Halen i've been using this, actually. the three Vaal pieces for effluvia resist + super recovery, swap out my usual vitality mantle for a health booster to counteract heavy effluvia, and the rest's basically my usual getup. down a mega armorskin at the start, get defense up L at the canteen, and damage isn't too much of an issue for me. (i do plan on getting health regen as my next weapon augment) i've also not been making weapons for different monsters yet either, just mostly relying on dragon to be decent against most anything

When you have 0 defense, you take a base amount of damage from enemy attacks; from there, damage is reduced based on your defense by a multiplier of 80/(DEF+80), and then further modified (if it was an elemental attack) by a [100% - (ElementalRes%/2)] multiplier. After that, if you have Divine Blessing/Felyne Defender/a defense augment, there's a chance to reduce damage with a certain multiplier.

Since Defense Boost 7 is just +35 defense when endgame armor sets tend to hover around 450, it doesn't really end up being a useful skill since it's just barely less than 7% more survivability for non-elemental attacks (like Vaal's non-breath attacks); for comparison, Health Boost 3 gives +50 HP on top of the base 150 HP (when you use a Max Potion or eat at the kitchen) which effectively gives you easy x1.33... survivability, while Divine Blessing 3 is a 25% chance to reduce damage by 50% (which is just over 14% survivability), one Defense Augment (10 defense boost, 20% chance to reduce damage by 30%) is effectively just over 8% survivability, and Fortify (after two carts, for x1.3 defense) is just over 25% more survivability.

Since Vaal Hazak deals damage over time with its effluvia gas, and the damage is increased in the AT fight, one health augment (heal 10% of damage as lifesteal) ends up super-useful to keep health up without needing to back off and heal, and is probably way more useful than a defense augment ever would be. I think when I did AT Vaal I was able to do fine with just Health Boost 3 + Effluvia Res 3 and a health augment, plus the Health Booster?

For the record, dragon element deals 0 damage to Vaal Hazak while it still has the corpse skin covering its body, but then becomes weak to dragon once that's broken; meanwhile fire damage is equally as effective all the time. If you can deal with the effluvium aura passive damage (ie., without a dragon weapon's elderseal disabling it more often), you might wanna try using a fire weapon instead? For DBs that'd probably be the Anja Cyclone III or Lava Cyclone II, if you don't have any of the fancy Kulve Taroth DBs.

with that said, extreme behemoth is on the event list for two weeks from now, though suspiciously it's one of only two listed for it (the other being Chew The Fat). maybe they'll announce AT Nergi for that week soon.......?

hi it's me again

spring fest starts in two week, and even is bringing back the AT jagras and lavasioth for a week each! afterwards the AT cycle will continue where it left off with AT Xeno.

PC side of things has been exciting, they got a free HD texture dlc earlier in the week and they get AT Kulve next week! AC collab starts may 3rd, Witcher collab May 9th. they're just about caught up!

with AT Xeno ending on May 26th, you think that's when they're gonna finally drop AT Nergi? at that point, it's not gonna be much longer until Iceborne drops! or at least hopefully get some news for E3!

with the second Blossom Festival going strong, i've finished up all the stuff that requires Teostra and Lunastra tickets, leaving me with only needing Kirin and Xeno tickets (and some of the AT Kulve crystals)

.......though i still need to complete He Taketh It With His Eyes, as well as extremoth and ancient leshen (i've had some good runs of the latter so far though, up to the third area of the fight). behemoth and AT Xeno seem very hard to do solo without knowing the meta for it, so i'll prolly hold off on those until my friends are available to help - kirin and leshen are next on my list, though (i keep surprising myself whenever i finally try an AT beast solo and kill it without any carts)

also..... i'm really loving the look of the guild cross armor

(sorry if that breaks anything, for some reason max-width didn't want to work so)
i think once i finish up all the AT tickets i'll be working on getting more crowns...

console versions now have a complete DLC pack (sans the Deluxe Kit items) for $40, and the PC version is currently on sale for $40! PC is also getting the Witcher quests on the ninth!

has anyone else still been playing?
