Currently we display the birthday for banned users, which seems pretty pointless. I mean, I doubt anyone would wish them well, given that they are probably not around and are unwanted here, etc.

I realize this is obviously something very low prio and probably not worth doing anything about, but I noticed it so I might as well just post about it. :v

Yeah, agreed. I know that this is not the case of all banned users (like Taryn for example) but I have to agree that for the most part it's weird to have their name appear on the calendar and the birthday bar.

This might be a more controversional idea though: should this be extended to inactive users? Or just banned ones?

I wonder, could Taryn's account be unbanned and given a color similar to Terra's hair? That shade of green was always her favorite color (and yeah, makes no sense to have birthdays of inactive/banned users displayed on the top line)

um I can't PHP but according to the GitHub repository, all it would take is for it to check if a user has a powerlevel of 0 or -1 before displaying it, unless I'm missing something important (which I probably am)

i mean, i can't think of any reason why adding "AND powerlevel >= 0" to the SQL code wouldn't work (or something similar), but also i don't think it's really super super necessary (i don't think every user who's ever been banned is necessarily so unwanted that remembering their birthday would be taboo. of course, the vast majority probably are, but still — it's not like their birthdays cease to exist when they're nuked. but also i doubt anyone's clamoring to celebrate the birthday of spambot #1283591784927849)

but i mean, if the main issue is effort-to-payoff ratio... i mean, it'd take hardly any effort to implement -- i could even submit a dumb pull request really quick (but i'd rather not jump over anyone's heads, of course)

i've always felt a little weird about the fact that terra's banned -- both because i think if she were still with us today she might not be banned, but also because it just feels oddly disrespectful to keep a deceased person banned if they weren't on terrible terms...? i don't know, maybe i'm overthinking things

Slightly unrelated to what I had in mind when I started the thread, but yes, I agree with this. Especially given that there are many here that she affected. I don't know the details of why she got banned in the first place, but even so, the account will be unused so might as well.

Terra's ban serves two purposes.

1. Something of a retired number — the account will never be used again
2. Similarly, it prevents anybody from using that account for nefarious purposes. Some other forums do this as well, and it's a bit of a personal thing — I've gotten several updates and emails from people who are deceased but had their accounts taken over by spammers

that being said, giving her a distinctive terra-hair color is not out of the question. at some point milesh lost his $100 gold name too, hmm

one potential option is to filter out users who have the "permabanned" level (they're slightly darker gray compared to normals) but that would also necessitate updating the various crap members we don't want showing up to have that level instead of the normal one. all in all it might just be easier to blank out passwords for the worst users

oh, that's good to know. i forgot about the whole "hijacking by bots is possible" thing being a factor

i think filtering by permabanned is definitely a good option. it'd be good for users like today's aaricevans who registered just to give us professional web developer tips

i'm looking at the list of -1s though and honestly there's not too many users we had who were banned but still tentatively possibly welcome again someday, because most of those people have already been unbanned. anyway, whatever gets decided, it's not like it'd be hard to change later anyway if we decide to change who's displayed, since it's just one digit of difference...

You could also introduce a sort of "retired account" or "locked account" system that's different from just being banned unless that would conflict with how Jul handles users.

Or allow banned users to have custom username colors too.

I don't think there's a need specifically for deceased users to have a different status. The custom title does a good job of explaining. I'd go with maybe an "account disabled" flag, different from power level (or use power level -1, and shift the current levels down), that would be used for cases where someone isn't banned, but is unlikely to return (or has requested to have the account disabled for a while). That would distinguish "account no longer used, disabled just to be safe" from "no longer welcome here".

Speaking of which, there doesn't seem to be any way to see a user's title on mobile.

yeah I agree this seems to be the best solution. actually i do think there's something in the code that prevents banned usernames from having custom colors but i can't seem to find it anywhere. either way that sounds like the easiest solution since you'd probably just have to change one line or something, wherever that line is

and given a different username color based on that?
though, it seems like a lot of work for one person,

i feel like the code pointed out that enforces gray for banned users wasn't always there. i know it wasn't because at one point we really did give milesh a golden name for donating 100 dollars post-ban. i'd laugh if that was still in there but just overridden because of that.

name colors are largely a farce anyway since it is (or was) pretty trivial to get one
