So during a two-hour demostration/ramble from my dad on his family ancestry research my eyes catch onto information from a Word document that it may be possible that not one, but two ancestors on my maternal side, sailors at that, may have jumped ship and entered Australia illegally in the late-19th century.

One hadn't been found in the twenty years since he entered, the other said he'd jumped ship near Sydney.

Australia has a long tradition of people arriving here illegally/uninvited

Still, gonna have to have dad take a closer look at those possible Australian leads. If nothing else it'd be neat to get into contact with those people (considering they aren't, y'know, right-wing nutjobs )

i kind of wanted the texture i have as my post background to be, like...
the background *inside* the textbox of my post layout
but i couldn't figure out how to do that and honestly this looks a little better
its less excessively bright than the cityscape i was using before, too...
sorry about that...

What's the point of putting that into the system, Twitter?

Thanks! I think peer pressure helped. I got peer pressured into coming down to a Masters swimming session, and then I got peer pressured into joining the club.

I'm feeling generally better, but I have some issues with fatigue and vertigo that I better get looked at. Those are not supposed to be a thing.

Looked up postage cost yesterday and...sending a letter to the US is €1,45 but the cheapest a package goes for (up to 2 kg) is €18,20? How in the hell?

I'm really guessing there's a reason other than pure greed, because for that basically makes anything too expensive to send.

So I was going to install Windows 10 on as a dual boot. I downloaded the most recent Education version and was ready to burn it to a disc when I realized something:

The installation file is 4.8GiB. DVDs can only hold up to 4.7GiB. I need a Dual Layer DVD.

Crap.

i wonder if there's anything that could be trimmed out of the iso
(outside of the WIM files)
that would bring the size down that extra ~100mb

i think it may be, like, an economies of scale thing
a letter costs next to nothing to send because it's so small and light,
it can be handled automatically almost every step of the way
the only time humans have to handle a single letter, physically,
after you've dropped it off, is upon pickup from the mailbox (toward the originating post office)
and from the destination post office to the recipient's mailbox
otherwise it can just be bandied about mostly-automatically on rollers, in huge bins, in trucks and planes, etc
and also, it takes up so little space that thousands of them can fit in one bin, tens of thousands on one truck, so on
whereas a package, simply by virtue of being larger (and of more variable physical shape)
needs way more physical handling by people
and only maybe, say, 30 packages can fit in the same bin that holds a thousand letters
so it just takes more effort and time and space to ship packages than it does letters

i wish i didnt know so much about this stuff sometimes
but i keep watching stuff like half as interesting and that guy nerds out about like,
shipping and logistics and airplanes, basically constantly

Flash drives are good for a one-time install and/or when you're in a hurry. But I like to have physical media just in case anything goes wrong later on and I need to use a repair disc. Because it's Windows and stuff like this happens sometimes, it happened with me while I was using 7 once and I had the wrong repair disc (I needed a specific one for SP1) and that wasn't fun.

Also, even online with shipping costs, buying an 8GB USB drive would've cost about the same as the 10 DVD-DLs I bought. Now I just need to wait until they actually arrive...

I've heard that you can remove some stuff but I have no idea how and what can be removed, and I'm not gonna find out by trial and error.

It's summer. It sucks. It could be worse but it still sucks.

yes, its absolutely a necessity
thankfully most homes in chicago were built recently enough to have central heating
and if you need to go outside, you put on like, two jackets, a coat, 3 pairs of pants, and 2 pairs of socks
