Well... Uh. Wow. Tumblr is now banning adult content, except not really because their wording is both vague enough to let them ban whoever they want but also clear-cut enough to be... terrible.

I especially like the inclusively-misogynistic "female-presenting nipples."
Algorithms are being used to mark things as inappropriate, based on user input (i.e. people reporting things), and so it'll be cleaned up by human staff afterwards when the 17th comes around. There will probably not be enough staff to actually appropriately handle this, as one may guess.
there's so many layers of terrible here i don't even know where to begin
is it the part where they're using The Algorithm to censor porn and now everything is being censored. is it the part where they said it was for the purposes of preserving "self-expression" (because nothing is more pro-self-expression than banning something they find objectionable to get that advertising dosh). is it how this move disproportionately spites the userbase of queer people that made tumblr interesting whatsoever in the first place? is it "Female-Presenting Nipples"
yahoo is a joke and i cannot believe tumblr got the bright idea to sell themselves to yahoo considering they've hideously mismanaged and destroyed literally every single property they've ever come into contact with (remember geocities and how they flushed tons of internet history down the drain bc apparently hosting tons of tiny HTML pages/images that were meant to load on dialup was apparently using too much space? how bout flickr. does the name del.icio.us ring a bell anymore of course it doesn't)
in conclusion, $$$ big social media internet $$$ is destroying everything fun or interesting or cultured
I still can't get over "female presenting nipples". Not only is it ridiculous sounding in and of itself, but it's attempting to be inclusive in the worst possible way, not to mention how arbitrary it really is.
This is such a bad move I don't even know where to begin, and given yahoo's track record I doubt the site will last much longer...

Correction; Verizon. (Yahoo at least when it originally obtained it admitted mature content was a large enough presence when they tried it on their initial purchase. Then they got bought by Oath/Verizon.)
It's pretty upsetting to me since Tumblr has been my main platform for my art for years, and most of my audience is on there, so greatly diminishing both my ability to post my art there (even though it's not pornographic) and to have an audience there is quite a personal loss. I'll keep posting things there as long as I can, and I've started posting things on other platforms as well, but they're just not as good for the kind of gifs I make, and it's hard to start from the beginning again.
Meanwhile, I'm pretty happy with the artists I follow on Tumblr, but many of them are getting falsely flagged and jumping ship as well, so even that will change for the worse.
