There's a Acer Aspire 17" laptop from around 2008-09 at my parents' home that a friend gave me since they had no use for it. I at first installed Arch Linux on it, with i3, but I could not run anything more than a few terminals on it as the 768MB of RAM filled quickly.

I got the idea to install XP on it; it's the only 32-bit computer in the house and it would be fun to rerun the batch scripts I used to write and post on a French Code Lyoko fan forum. Those scripts are what got me into software development, gave me my best friend, and made me move ~700 km away from home just to be geographically close to this friend.

I took the opportunity to try out Escargot and rerun old VB.NET projects as well. All of this motivated me to give a little more attention to my 98SE VM. A few weeks ago, I used it to log in via SSH to my brand new server and deploy stuff via Docker, just for the fun of running very recent stuff using older stuff.

Anyway, what I would really like now is to also have a Windows 98 SE device, not just a VM. I at first was looking for a smol ThinkPad like the X201T I own, that could run 98SE, and with a ThinkLight because why not.

I then stumbled upon the HP Compaq TC1100, a tablet PC that runs Windows 98SE. I saw some people also running XP on it; then I thought: what about a laptop that could dual-boot both 98SE and XP? I cannot currently find any TC1100s that could fit the budget I am allowing myself on this thing.

Does anyone here have experience dual-booting 98SE and XP, and could recommend me a laptop? Any size, I won't mind, and tablet is a plus but not required.

Julbench3.1  94% full, 55K free, 824K in use
I had Windows 98 SE and XP in dual-boot on an Athlon XP tower I built somewhat recently, but I ended up going for XP alone on there as I had issues with the drivers. There were Windows 98 drivers for the hardware in that particular system, but they were unstable at times and such. Plus, the drive letter shuffling was a bit annoying (i.e. 98 seeing its own drive as C, XP seeing its drive as C).

So, in the case of laptops or prebuilt machines, one general suggestion would be to check if there was official support from the manufacturer for both OS - I'd imagine that to be the case for most systems made around the time of XP's release. It looks like ex. the Dell Latitude C640 laptop from 2002 - random example because I have one - has drivers for both OS available on Dell's website; it's a decent machine too, with an, in my case, 2 GHz Pentium 4-M CPU. They all have a Mobility Radeon 7500 GPU, up to 1 GB of DDR-RAM, a slot for an internal WiFi card if needed, etc. Given 512 MB RAM and an 80 or so GB HDD (or 64 GB CF/SD Card in an adapter) partitioned in half, it would make a nice dual-boot system, I guess.

Do note the 512 MB RAM: Windows 98 & co. need some tweaking to run properly with more than 512 MB of RAM. I think it was an added or changed entry or two in system.ini for up to 1 GB, and some patched VXD files for over 1 GB...

Well, this is probably not much in terms of advice, but I hope this still helps somehow?

ME runs with 1GB of RAM out of the box depending on drivers stability you maybe will have better luck with it.

A thinkpad would be a good idea tho

Also the original eeepc can do it

Thanks to you both for helping out!

I had a look at every Pentium III/4M Dell Latitude C series there is and I could not find any in good enough condition for reasonable prices; the cheaper ones were half broken and the spare parts would cost more than the laptops themselves in total!

But since I was still motivated to find something, I had a look at some more ThinkPads: X30, X31, X40, R40, R40e, R50, R50e, T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p. I found 6 different offers and since those models have specs so close to each other it took me more than an hour of browsing the ThinkWiki and squinting my eyes on blurry eBay pics to decide.

I settled on a ThinkPad R50e 1834-J8G: A 1.7 GHz Pentium M, a 60GB HDD, 1.5 GB of RAM, and an amber ThinkLight for €75. The battery is dead just like on any old laptop sold on eBay but I'm totally fine with that, everything else on this laptop works. The laptop should arrive by the end of the week.

Now I just have to get some ISOs ready!

I promise to take good care of it!

The first computer I used was a Packard Bell tower with 98SE on it, I only remember because we have a picture of me at the desk when I was four, with a Solitaire game running on the screen. That probably explains my strong attachment to 98SE.

You're both... making me feel old? ^^" Tho maybe it's just that we were kinda poor, so I never had the most modern systems to begin with...

My first PC, some time in the mid to late 90s, was a former server with a 486DX2/50, 24 or so MB RAM, two 800 MB SCSI HDDs and no optical drive, running MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11. And that's saying nothing of the 8-bit Commodores and Amigas we've had before, of which I was eventually the only user, so they were basically mine (still have our old C64, too).

Anyway, 98 SE was a good OS, but I can't muster any enthusiasm or nostalgia for ME. Too many memories of having to troubleshoot my mom's ME system after something broke again... but to be fair, the OS and the user were equally at fault here.
