VL-Tone essentially made a simple randomizer for Starfox a while back. All it can do is randomize the first level, and even then it's more of a glitched-out mess than anything, but it's fun enough to tinker around in.

In 2013 I made an exit randomizer for SMW for some reason even though I hadn't had anything to do with actual SMW hacking proper since like 10 years prior to that. It's kinda fun I guess even though the randomization probably sucks.

I've been running quite a few randomizers lately: Zelda 1, ALTTP, Link's Awakening, Final Fantasy, and a couple Mario randomizers are some of the ones I've played.

The LTTP one has been a lot of fun for me, honestly.

I'm kinda curious about the guys who do 'em now in the tournaments. I'd never have time for one, but it might be fun to get used to it and commentate or something. Seems like a fun dig to get into.

so I started a new run in Final Fantasy Randomizer and get jumped by Gray Imps that have Thunder (not the spell, the enemy ability) that nearly one-shots my entire party. Gonna have to see what I can do to avoid these guys early on because nobody can fight them safely right now.

I started an Aria of Sorrow randomizer seed not to long ago. Got Claimh Solais and the Hippogryph soul early which completely broke the game.

I don't play any, but it's fun to watch other people play them. I'm really impressed by how they're pulled off, especially when they do things like change the behavior of enemies and whatnot.

I've been doing commentary for the Spring 2018 Link to the Past randomizer tournament! I'm not actually in it though as I'm still practicing. :X

Been building a playlist though of all the matches I've done commentary for so far!

The Dragon Warrior one is pretty neat. It can generate new random overworld maps. Something like that might be cool in other games.

I've pondered a Mario Kart 64 randomizer, but what would it do? There's not a whole lot that would be interesting to change.

Looks like someone's making a crossover Super Metroid/LTTP randomizer. Items are spread across both worlds, and you switch games by entering the fortune teller's house in LTTP or the map rooms in Super Metroid.

I don't think it's been released to the public yet, but you can watch Andy's run of it here.

Zelda 2 Randomizer's newest update is awesome because of the new player choices and it makes the Flute/Hammer much more viable than they were originally.

Hopefully the LADX Randomizer gets some more love because it's good so far, just needs some bugs fixed. Wishing in the near future, it'll get more options to play around with, and possibly more features.

There's an Ocarina of Time Randomizer that appeared like a few months ago. I like playing it, but I'm not really good at it.

This is how I feel. I don't have the patience to personally play them multiple times and learn how to execute all the tricks, but I love watching other people race them. I love seeing how the logic plays out, and especially I always hope to see really convoluted troll seeds. I love seeing runners who take wild gambles whether they actually work out or not.

Lately I've been hooked on Final Fantasy 4 Free Enterprise. Get the airship Enterprise free at the start of the game, and treasures + key items + characters + bosses are randomized. I've been watching one race a night for the past month, though usually at the Youtube archive rather than the Twitch streams. FF4 is one of my favorite games from my childhood, and FE is the one of the few randos I've found as fun as LTTP. 💚

I've been kind of "over" them for a while — while there's some skill involved, sure, too much of it feels like it just boils down to who gets luckiest with a gamble or choice they end up making. The tournaments haven't helped because they're just, ironically, the same thing over and over, and seeing someone lose because of a single decision sucks.

I've talked about it elsewhere, but my main problem is just that there's no interaction. In a normal race, you can watch what the other person is doing; if they're behind, you can use a safer but slower method instead of going for a faster but riskier trick, and the inverse is true — if you're behind, you have a reason to try riskier strategies that might not work out, because the alternative is having no chance at all. In Randomizer races, there's none of that. The commentators are always talking about how [Runner X] "[must] feel way behind", but there's not any reason behind that assumption other than the fact that the clock is still going and the other person hasn't finished yet.

(You also can't have any communication at all, at least for the "official" races, so you don't even get to hear what a runner might be thinking, or planning, which makes it even more boring... especially if you end up having to mute an obnoxious pair of commentators.)

One thing that I had suggested that got refined by Acmlm was having spoiler races, where you're given the ROM to race, then when the race actually starts, the spoiler file — "these items are here", not the actual suggested route — is provided, and the challenge is to figure out the fastest route to the end of the game given that knowledge. It tests one's routing and execution skill much more, while removing almost all of the luck element. I think it'd make for some more exciting races.

I'm not sure to what degree it matters, but you could likely even allow communication and stream watching, since everyone has the same information, and if you're trying to copy someone else's route, you're always going to be a little slower

Last I checked, the Z4 Randomizer was Discord-only I can try to get you a link if you'd like, though.

Link's Awakening isn't a game that's terribly well-suited to traditional randomizers that move the items around. The game is designed to be quite linear. The current randomizer tries to get around this by allowing for warp locations to be randomized, and adding a few obvious and obnoxious barriers, but I think it'd be a lot better if you just modified the overworld to allow for more exploration. Remove some pits and rocks from some places, that sort of thing.

What would really be nice is an eventual way to make fully random dungeons and caves, but I don't think anybody is going to bother doing that any time soon

similar to the SM/LttP crossover randomizer, there was also a Metroid/Zelda 1 crossover randomizer.

unfortunately the games are still their clunky old selves and the warps are randomized, so it's not exactly the easiest to navigate (and quite hard to even try to route/plan for), but hey it's a thing

Somehow I'm not surprised... maybe they can put a map into Metroid when you pause, or at least show a pop-up of where on the map you are when you enter or leave it?

There was a SMB1 ROM hack called "Super Mario R", I want to say, that featured randomized levels (!) — there were a handful of "chunks" it would use to construct a level that would fit together in some way. It was really neat, but I can't find any information on it online. I wish I still had a copy of it because it was pretty neat.

I wonder, do games like Toejam & Earl count? That's another one I've seen getting played pretty often, and it has a random world option. Unfortunately, no way to pick a seed, so everyone gets a different game each time, but it's just for fun so it doesn't matter too much.

ah right, metroid has an automap added that's always shown in the upper right, and both games show the locations of items and warps (but not what the items are) when paused

and Toejam & Earl is a rougelike

I actually had "do roguelikes like..." in my post (E: before changing it to what it says now), instead of games, but my point still stands
