I found it when i search chuk1x by google, i thought it was a normal BBS but I found there is a rpg status on the right. That looks very cooooool.
So what is the site exactly for?

Check the FAQ. In short, this is just a community about... whatever. There's no real focus. We've been around for 11 to 18 years (depending on who you ask).

The RPG status stuff is just for show and doesn't affect anything.

I'm actually sort of weirded out nobody expanded the RPG system in a meaningful way. You'd think with the amount of Acmlmboard forks and clones somebody would add some nifty stuff.

There were multiple attempts over the years that I saw, AFAIK, but it mostly got eaten by people getting busy or hubris or doing more important things or whatever.

Like Xenesis said, this actually happened a few times:

- RPG Revelations (?), Tuvai's ooooold board: had a battle system and some other stuff, was eventually redone in TuvaiBB (their custom board), eventually died

- EDS Forums, which appears to have finally died, had a bunch of additional stuff like different classes, PvE battles, and sometimes even PvP I think, probably one of the more fleshed out ones

- Some others that got halfway there or added small stuff, and then got forgotten, broken, etc.

The fact that a lot of Acmlmboard history has been lost due to various people abusing security exploits hasn't helped.

There was also a start of an RPG battle system on the original Acmlm's Board; Acmlm was playing around with a C SDL application that would tie into it, but it didn't get too far beyond some basic concepts. If I remember correctly, he also has (had?) a image that would show scenes from an RPG-style world, updated every time it was loaded, and the characters / states were actually tracked and such. But I haven't seen that in a good decade, so who knows.

One other complication that nobody really talks about is that the RPG stats are extremely dynamic. While in other RPGs you'll have flat numbers for each stat, even if they can go up/down sometimes, the ones in this system are generated in real time based off of a few factors. If you have enough EXP/levels, even a single post can change your stats by quite a bit... and at the same time, everyone tends to fall into the same base stats, since it's largely based on posts and time since registering. Plus the goofy multiplicative equipment.

I've very slowly been working on an Acmlmboard 0.7 fork over the past few months (you can find the test forum here) and one of my big plans is to add a fully redone RPG system. Right now I still have a bunch to do simply regarding the forum itself (including a whole bunch of bugs to fix ), and it might be a while before I actually get around to implementing it.

I did make a simple little test/mock-up thing though.

I should really yank that classic Powered By button; I never really was a fan of the "updated" one, even if it fit that weird 88×31 stamp size (or whatever it was).

0.7 might be "easier" to work on just because there's less of it

Heh, this was actually one of the reasons I chose 0.7 to fork in the first place.

Converting everything to MySQL from the conglomerate of .DAT files was quite the chore, but definitely better than going through the ton of messy queries in 1.92 and upgrading them to mysqli + prepared statemtents. Less code also means less use of register_globals.

register_globals is somewhat easier to fix if you just turn on strict warnings, since iirc php will complain about accesses to undefined variables in that case.

Getting rid of that was something I've wanted to do for a while, but there's way too much going on there.

To think I'm spending my time at work upgrading a phpBB 3.0 board to 3.2 when I could just migrate it to an Acmlmboard! What am I doing?

I never really got the hate phpBB got. I mean it's not great, sure, but it was a pretty solid forum system for a long time, even if it had its fair share of security oopsies. And back then, everything did.

The real question is why aren't you migrating it to a ~modern~ platform like Discourse™

phpBB was always my go-to if i wanted to set up a forum and didn't plan on modding it too much

it wasn't as buggy as MyBB could be, wasn't as bloated as vBulletin, wasn't as HYPERbloated and trying too hard to become The Facebook No One Wanted as IPB (i hate IPB), wasn't as frankly just kinda weird and ugly as SMF was

and it was free, which vB and IPB weren't

(i haven't really played with FluxBB or whatever much, so i don't have many opinions there. same with xenforo or w/e)

granted acmlmboards are still my fav (both layout wise and in terms of its feature set) and probably the most fun to just play around with, but yeah

Wasn't it MyBB that ran EL for a while? I've... legitimately forgotten.

Also, if you wanted an older version of IPB, there was InvisionFree... as far as I know, those still run 1.3 from 2003.

yup. IPB from 2005-2007 (including invisionfree early on), MyBB from 2008-2012 (+2014)

in terms of its design/layout/feature set/admin panel/etc MyBB's actually my favorite out of all of the "big" board software, but holy hell did it have a tendency to break a lot

I forgot about SimpleMachines and a bunch of the other generic forum softwares ... I wonder how many are even still around.

The NAS I got came with a built-in copy of phpBB (??????????) and I've been tempted to turn it on for shits and giggles.

phpBB also had a huge usability upgrade in the past decade. Customising it in any way was about acmlmboard level before the dedicated hooks and versioning in Version 3.

Back in the day in the mid 2000s and the days of V2, it was fairly...cheap? under the hood. Like it did the job but it wasn't amazing at it.

Still, it was better than SMF in every way.

God I hate SMF.

I remember having to edit files manually to add some stuff, yeah. It definitely wasn't anything I'd consider fun, and of course it tended to break immediately.

MediaWiki kind of spoiled me in that regard, it's so much easier to just say "run this before user registration" and have it work, without having to dig thirty folders deep into god knows where.

phpBB is actually pretty usable these days (aside from the clunky ACP), but to be honest, AB is unique, quirky and very comfortable to the eye. ABs are actually the only sites I can tolerate dark styles on, probably because they don't seem to use grey on black...

I always thought phpBB was pretty rad. If Invision was the Cadillac of message boards (And yeah, it was super bloated but it had everything you could ever want) then phpBB was like a sensible Toyota. Not too flashy, but definitely a good board.

Glad to see others thought SMF was weird. I always assumed I was the only one with that opinion.
