Should we have a max width for the forums?
That is, if your browser is wide enough, it only displays in the center

Basically, to make readability better. In this example, I think the max width is 1500px or so -- under that it would be full-width, just like always.

It's not a huge change.

(※ You might also notice the faded-out page counts, which go fully visible on hover. I find it makes things a little less distracting, but that's just some user CSS. If you're interested in that, too, though, let me know.)

I'm not actually sure yet what happens if a post is too wide for this, so I guess that's something else to test

(Also more user CSS shenanigans)

This is a big pet peeve for me; I don't really like when forums do this. To me it just looks..odd and out of place.

If you go through with it I think it should be opt-in with a profile setting.

Nyanners' Post
1440 is a nice cap that I use via custom css, anything over and we get this shitty lack of word wrap sometimes when postboxes >1024 without sidebar.

I'm yay for adding a limiter!

I honestly don't care too much about the width, tho I guess I'd lean towards limiting the max width slightly, but I do like the faded-out page counts, I guess?

Maybe I can add a few config options to choose how to display the forums; maybe something like max page width, font size (in %), and a field for your own custom CSS to be added?

As for the fades:

span.pagelinks {

opacity: .1;
transition: all .3s ease-in;
}

td:hover > span.pagelinks, td:focus-within > span.pagelinks {
opacity: 1;
transition: all 0.1s ease-in;
}

This will make them fade in when you're hovering over the row containing them

The max width for the body is one of the changes I'm pretty indifferent for (partly thanks to the 1366x768 screen res I have, but I didn't really care much even when I had the Win10 laptop with a larger screen resolution)

The downside would be of tables getting too big which, well...

i'd be down. i use a 1440p monitor with a maximized browser window so jul can be pretty jarring at times

the fadeout's nice too!

I'm 100% on board with this. I almost always have my browser window maximized, and it always bugs me when older webpages just stretch to sizes they were never really meant to stretch to.

Making it an option would be ideal.

I actually do have a bit of an issue with how much it stretches, since I run my browser in full screen sized window.
I would rather if the page sort of adapted a few elements to not be full width:

Granted, this might just be due to my dyslexia, but I have a hard time lining up post counts and most recent post with their respective forum, since they are on opposite sides of the screen.

Making the central thing more in line with the width that the top banner and stuff takes up would be super neat IMO. I don't mind full width in threads, because users have post layouts that I guess fill up the space, sort of?

Of course, this is a little hacky even for me — I had to manually set the width to a pixel value, which wouldn't work, but "100%" and other things weren't working either. Ideally, this would also work for the thread history view in replies.

...and now, after looking at the solution, there's part of me wondering about if it's even worth it having multiple scrollbars on the page.

I'm not sure anymore.

The problem isn't as pronounced now that everybody's post is in its own table (though maybe this should be fixed to be other semantic tags instead, who knows; rip old browsers), but in ye olden days it would cause the entire page to stretch. You can still see this on the thread review on newreply, where every post is stretched out unreadably long.

The width of posts does seem much when compared to other sites I'm used to. The visual change would take some getting used to, but it would probably be worth it for the sake of improved readability.

I think this is a reasonable change. I browse with layouts off and some posts like to stretch off into the sunset due to the page width.

I'll start looking into this soon ... I might move to using a json text blob for user config like this (as opposed to a separate column in `users` for every single thing). Columns are nice, but the overhead in parsing one small block of that, plus the ease of not having to update the entire database when I want to add a field, seems like a nice idea.

(Though there's some stuff like schemes and whatnot that are nice to have in columns, since you can count them up and see who's using them )
