While randomly browsing, I happened upon something I wasn't aware of all these years since the game's release.

This page says and shows the Japanese version of the GB Pokemon TCG has Hudson's IR sensor onboard the cartridge.
Whereas, western versions use the GBC internal IR.

Presumably meaning Japan doesn't need a GBC for the game's IR functions.
Except I don't own two JPN copies to try it.
