clicky here to look at every old and embarrassing version

Good grief, I remember seeing the original back when it was new.

Though even comparing against this one, I don't think any of the old ones are bad; they're all quite good, but the attention to detail is a lot more obvious in this one

Yeah, I've been doing this for a long time… although that's what makes this piece so good for comparing progress.

I'm not sure I agree with you that the others aren't bad, although I do find the oldest the most charming and cute. The 2005 one bothers me the most, because the face is very strange, and the anatomy is quite… disturbing. Those arms, for instance, would come almost down to her knees if she were standing straight upright. Her spine appears to be broken, too.

It's funny you mention attention to detail. I always thought, while I was actually working on each version, that they were quite detailed pieces. The 2010 one was never finished because I ran out of steam doing all the details (I probably spent too long rendering the hair). I guess with each version my skills have improved though and the details are definitely more realised.

P.S. The flowers on the cheongsam dress are supposed to be catnip

I think that order is probably what I would rank them in too (newest, oldest, newer, older).

I also think that you're your own worst critic, though. The first one really is good and cute

Oh, I agree that I can be a tough critic. But I also think people sometimes think that's a self-esteem thing and not a self-evaluation thing.

Some of it's a self-esteem thing. It's hard not to compare yourself to other artists, too.

But I also don't get a lot of critique from other people… and when I do, it… sometimes it's just mean. I was once told on this forum (a very long time ago) that my art was "ugly". I didn't mean to make ugly art, and I didn't know what I was doing that was making it ugly. I got a little upset and defensive and I said that wasn't helpful. I was told I couldn't take criticism, and that I just wanted people to kiss my arse. I stopped drawing for a long time.

Anyway, I digress. I've found that to improve, I need to look critically at my own work. If I didn't notice things like arms being too long or spines being weirdly shaped, I wouldn't study how to improve them. I finally figured out that the "ugly" stuff was facial proportion issues, often things like overlarge foreheads. I still accidentally make ugly art and there's all kinds of things I don't notice I'm doing wrong. Sometimes I can't tell what's "off" about something (like the Rainbow Brite thing), but without being critical of my own work I'd never get any better.

But yeah, I agree that the first one is cute. The face is my favourite part of that one.

i'll entirely admit that it's probably me projecting what i see in a lot of people (extremely unhelpful self-negativity) here. a lot of people forget that while self-criticism is good, one also has to appreciate the good parts — even if it's just doing something. (though in your case, after 15+ years, there's a lot of good to appreciate, heh.)

Actually, that's a good point, I think it might have been late acmlm? I'm not quite sure now, it's… probably around the time this board was founded and maybe a reason why I'm here and not at whatever is left of there (if there is anything?). I only remember that it was in response to this picture:

And yeah, there's some weird face shit going on here (oh haha and some weird arm shit I just noticed too). But that ballpoint pen tonal rendering? Fucken top notch.

Edit: it's fucking date stamped. It can't be *here* then with that date stamp.

I definitely have my own unhealthy self-negativity, but I'm trying very hard to move away from it when it comes from my art. I guess that's often easier said than done though… in art, and in life generally. If there's something in particular I appreciate about my old art though, I do think I was better at uncomplicated "cute", and my improved realism is getting in the way. I'm guessing at some point I'll be able to cycle back to some of it.

yeah that shading is fuckin bad ass and while yeah sure the eyes on the face seem a little far apart and maybe the arm is weird it's an actual drawn in pen thing on paper, so, yeah. dang. it's p good

I used to do a lot more stuff with cheap ballpoint pens. I also used to do a lot more doodling at work though, too… I have no idea where the actual drawing on paper is any more, but I have all sorts of old crap in my computer. I don't think I've done anything on paper since this unicorn in 2016. Right now is definitely not a good time to get out all the pencils and markers and things…

Life is… definitely hard, at times. It has its good points, and its bad points. Learning to be kind to yourself through all the ups and downs is the kind of work that… basically goes on forever.
