EDIT: Looking back at this I was being way too dramatic so don't take me too seriously here. That being said though, SMWCentral is still a shit website.

I'm sure some of you are aware of the shitfest that occured last night.

I wouldn't consider myself a long time member of the site, but I was around for about 3.5 years on and off before I was brown banned a second time, and my four year anniversary came and went last November. I joined the site after I had just recently turned 13. I logged on every so often to ask help questions and I participated in VLDC7 way back when (Can't believe its been four years since then). Over time I slowly became integrated within the community, albeit I was an obnoxious 13 year old back then, but even so I made a lot of friends and had a ton of good times which I still look back on with nostalgia (For example, the whole "Everybody's digging with a shovel, use a wrench" trend).

I met one of my best internet friends through SMWC with whom we would chat in PMs all the time and got to know each other really well (We still talk, but he left the site and only really talks through discord at this point). He and I even ran a little friend group in late 2014/early 2015 called Onyx Corp and we had a lot of fun with it. It eventually got disbanded after I disappeared for a little while and he left because of personal issues with the site, but it was fun while it lasted.

My SMWC experience has had highs and lows. There was the lows of people getting mad at me for saying stupid things, the highs of making new friends, the lows of seeing people I loved talking to leave or become inactive, the highs of seeing those people return, and of course, the lows of being banned TWICE for causing pointless petty drama because I had nothing better to do.

2017 was a very difficult time in my life and I used SMWC as an escape. This both went well and backfired, because on the one hand my friends there helped me through those difficult times, but on the other hand I was very emotionally unstable online and overreacted to every little thing and flamed people over it. But even after being banned I still had comfort in some of those friends, even after I deleted and added people to my friends list over and over.

After I moved out of the city I once called home and started a new life for myself, I had way more pressing issues to deal with so over time I interacted with people from the site less and less (save for my closest friends) and I barely looked at the site anymore, I just became a casual lurker, and still am.

Overall I'd say my experience with SMWC was great despite the many road bumps and eventual crash along the way. Despite the bad stuff, I grew a lot as a person from the mistakes I made on the site, and to this day I still have a lot of great friends and wonderful memories...

...so you can probably imagine how angry I was when I woke up this morning to the news of what happened last night.

Despite everything I've said so far, I was and still am quite dissatisfied with what the site has become. It's always been a cesspool of bad shitposting, circlejerking and pointless bickering, but as time goes on it's only been getting worse and worse. SMWC was basically just the butt of a lot of my jokes between friends from the site, and we get a good chuckle over it. THIS, on the other hand, is a whole new level of insanity.

I knew there was always a divide between people on the site who tend to think more conservatively, and as someone who despite being very liberal is very open minded and advocates for civil and open discussion of controversial topics felt bad for those people, but I have no sympathy for Kieran.

The occasional shitter like Sockbat Replica or the TOP QUALITY sm64 peeps saying horrible shit is one thing, but hearing the founder of a site I once loved be openly racist and a whiny little asshole in the fucking announcements forum because he can't say the N word is truly disheartening and disgraceful. I have a lot of friends who have controversial opinions I disagree with, and for the most part I'm open to discussing said topics, censorship being one of those topics, but this just goes over the deep end.

Sometimes I think the mods on SMWC can be a little quick to censor things they don't like at times.

But this is not one of those times.

I've been contemplating quitting SMW hacking for a long time. Between lack of time because of school, worrying about college, and the fact that I have to use a Mac now since my old computer broke, I don't really have the time or resources to hack SMW anymore. Even then, I figured that maybe I would pick it up again one day despite my current lack of interest, but after this I think this is the final nail in the coffin. I'm officially done with SMW hacking.

Great fucking job Kieran, you showed just how much of a piece of shit you are for the world to see. I hope you're FUCKING HAPPY.

Most of the ROM hacking community, in general, has failed to mature over the many years it has existed. See also Nesdev.

ROMHacking.net only recently started getting better by finally banning the "baddesthacks" people, aka the group of people perpetuating those awful 1999-era Nesticle hacks. You know the ones.

I'm actually amazed this didn't happen sooner. Still, confirms my long standing feeling that SMWC is a place to not be.

The badhacks crowd on RHDN, boy THAT was a struggle. My understanding is that it finally happened because policy finally got changed (likely due to patreon stuff) and that driving away the majority of your userbase in the name of freedom was a bad idea. AFAIK the mods were mostly relieved that they could.

The sad thing is, I can't say I'm surprised.

I've already "left" SMW Central, but now I have even less reason to go back.

Holy crap, what an unnecessary shitshow. Like seriously, that was just posted out of the blue with no staff consideration or whatever? Wow...

Care to elaborate? I've browsed nesdev many times and it seemed fine for the most part.

That's because tech companies are being evil DNS issues that have no proven cause, but happen more often if you're routing through Cloudflare.

Try this?

You probably need to tinker with your DNS settings. You could use archive.org on the meantime (unless that also gives you an error, in which case RIP).

If you guys need a quick update on everything, the rest of the admin team and most staff very much disagreed with the thread and none of the things that are on that first post were followed. Common slurs and other racist things and the like are not accepted on the site now, period. Even as jokes. There's still a good amount of people that don't like this and want the staff to reverse this change.

Overall I feel like the website is finally trying to improve itself and there's a bunch staff members that are actively working to make it better, but it keeps getting stuck on obstacles due to the way the website was managed for years.

If that stands, that's a good step.

Unfortunately it may take a generational change to the userbase to flush all of the dickweeds who got comfortable with their terrible behaviour being acceptable and standard for over a decade.

thanks! switched DNS over and it works now. it's also horrific how difficult it is to actually change the DNS providers in windows 10.

edit: yikes

I got banned because some douchebag claimed I was an "alt-right" just because I didn't like Obama's Title IX policies.
