The polar opposite to this thread. I'll start.

The most recent occurence of this happening to me was when I started to read a piece of fiction (it says it's Homestuck fanfiction, it really isn't) called Modern Cannibals (yes, the one that was advertised in my sig up until recently) from a recommendation one of my older friends gave me. The description they gave me was "Modern Cannibals is about learning to cut out the toxicity in your life by flinging it off a metaphorical rooftop." and that sounded IMMENSELY INTERESTING TO ME, so I started reading.

I read it, and about a third of the way in I was like "Okay, this is cool. Can't wait to see what this leads up to." And then they all get to the convention center and they meet this guy who is probably the most disgusting man I've seen in text and at that point I just gave up. The fiction was not at all what I thought it would be after that point. I thought it would be a whirlwind adventure with some flawed and selfish teenagers, but as it turns out, it's apparently some weird slice-of-life story with this weirdo Media Consultant and Andrew Hussie, for some reason. I don't know what I expected, but it certainly wasn't this.

Reminds me of the time where I read part of an ACTUAL Homestuck fan fiction, and while I can appreciate its writing and the pictures it sporadically used during the story... when a story like that involves child abuse and terrorism against a fictional alien race... yeah. No. I can't. I can't handle that shit, man. I respect this story, but I must request you have it be thirty feet away from me at all times.

So, uh, yeah. Post things you thought you would be really into but ended up disliking.

Uh, Senki Zesshou Symphogear? Ridiculous premise, the promise of over the top action, etc. However, from the 5 episodes I've seen, it takes itself way too seriously; everything that happens is always serious business, there's betrayals and whatnot, and so on. And because of how ridiculous the setup is, I couldn't take it seriously at all when it wanted us viewer to. At least the first season's opening is really good.

(And on the opposite side, probably fitting the other thread, I ended up liking the somewhat similar Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu a lot, because it doesn't take itself too seriously, and despite terrible animation quality in the original TV broadcast.)

That last thing you describe (child abuse and terrorism involving aliens) sounds like Homestuck canon, though. The abuse narratives in Homestuck were one of the main reasons I liked it so much (before Rose, who I identified with quite a bit, blamed herself for her abuse, and I noped out)

On topic, Key the Metal Idol. A story about a robot (!) idol singer (!) who wants to make 30,000 friends in order to become human (!). That sounds like a cute and heartfelt story of a robot girl learning what it means to be friends, probably with a plausibly deniable yuri romance at its heart? No, it's actually an incredibly gory hard sci-fi thriller about government-produced cybernetic weapons. Yuck.

Akira. I had seen a lot of the animation for it, and I adored it. The setting seemed like exactly my kind of thing too. It's pretty popular and well respected in a lot of the circles I'm in, so I came into it with high expectations.

Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed with it. I didn't really connect with the story or any of the characters at all, and I felt like the various action scenes were nothing special. The animation itself is quite beautiful, but it wasn't enough to keep me invested throughout the film.

Pan’s Labyrinth

i really really wish i could like this movie, but there’s just something amiss about a fantasy movie set during Francoist Spain. didn’t impress me at all.

Starbound.

It seemed like the sort of game that would be right up my alley, especially since I have a huge love for Terraria. I'm a huge sci-fi nut, so combining an exploration based game like Terraria with space exploration sounds lovely!

But starbound has shit exploration, there's a lot of places to go, but no reason to go there. You will have seen most of the content when it comes to planets and stuff very early on, and once you have seen it once, there is generally never a reason to come back. All of the post-release content they have added to the game have just added side things that feel very disconnected from the main experience too. Starbound is great for building aesthetic things, plenty of building materials and scenery objects to use, so if that's what you want then the game is great. But the game certainly don't live up to the expectations it set if you ask me.

That Cat Wishes book that's been making the rounds.

Something about the latter half of it makes me very uncomfortable. I stopped reading a few pages before the end, and I don't really care to pick it back up.

Arrival

hoo boy this one's gonna be hard to admit. it is very well-directed and the cinematography is great, at least (Blade Runner 2049 is better at both tho), but for every day that passes since i saw it i kinda like it less and less

so, like, the premise of the film sounded incredibly interesting, right? my roommate/friend (who's gonna see this post eventually and she doesn't know yet, so yikes) told me it was about the process of learning to communicate with aliens and that it was sad. like, that premise sounds great -- linguistics!! aliens!! stories about communication and miscommunication!! emotional resonance!! and for most of the first half of the movie i was actually kinda hooked. the story was super interesting and its mysteries felt fascinating and it was aesthetically super, super cool and it was hitting upon some really great themes. but the characters never hit the point where i felt any attachment to them, and as the film revealed its secrets more and more it got... significantly less interesting. when i watched it with my roommates i felt like i was the only person in the room who wasn't impacted by the ending, and that was super awkward

i'm not a linguist but like it really feels like it leans on the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (spoilers) maybe a lil bit too hard for me to suspend my disbelief... and uh, by the last 30 minutes or so it didn't feel like the events of the movie had any real purpose other than to fulfill this narrative idea that Heisserer/Villeneuve had. i wonder if that's part of why it robbed the movie of its resonance for me -- it kind of just made a lot that'd happened feel... pointless. also part of the problem is (without spoiling too much) the main twist of the movie feels kinda unrelatable to me... idk, the whole thing was just an unsatisfying experience.

i really like this review, it is excellent and crystallizes a lot of my feelings so much better than i could, tbh, but also it spoils everything so... (also i dunno if i'd rate it THAT low)

M83

back in 2011 or so when i was super obsessed with shoegaze this band was really popular and i was kinda really interested in them cuz it's like... omg dense reverby shoegazey wall of sounds but with synths/cool more interesting tones!?!? so i downloaded dead cities, red seas & lost ghosts and was really just not into it. idk, i didn't feel like the songwriting was that good and (this is really fucking weird considering how much i loved shoegaze at the time but bear with me) the guitar tone is too grating/harsh. like, to the point where it feels jarring. and a lot of the songs felt aimless and i felt like the inclusion of strings and stuff detracted from the aesthetic i was expecting... i didn't bother listening to another album and i haven't really listened to them much since

The Byrds

once in like 2008 i was really obsessed with "Eight Miles High" and thought it was a really cool song with the weird eerie vocal harmonies and crazy ass rickenbacker playing. then i heard "I See You" on last.fm radio and i'm like "whoah this is cool, i love the layered loopy rickenbacker 'twinkles'". then later i downloaded Fifth Dimension cuz that's the album the songs i liked were from and all i got was hokey bullshit with some dude trying way too hard to be some wise hippie prophet like he's bob dylan and frankly that should have been what i expected but i didn't so my bad but i didn't come out of that experience enjoying even one song that i didn't already like. i have not listened to the byrds since

Alice in Wonderland

my girlfriend's making me rewatch all the disney movies. i liked a lot of the imagery as a kid but when i rewatched it it just made me feel depressed and disoriented like holy shit this is like a neverending drug trip why is everyone tormenting alice just let her go home already

Peter Pan

liked it as a kid, rewatched w/ girlfriend. two major problems with this movie:
- none of the characters are fun or interesting except captain hook and smee
- walt disney was a racist dipshit

tbh i’m so tired of M83 now, they created a monster

like, if you combine M83 w/ the cinematic zeitgeist back then (The Tree of Life) you basically end up w/ the next 7 or so years of tech commercials and landscape time lapses.

to demonstrate this point, i made a (still growing) YouTube playlist of M83 timelapses.

I know it's been around a while, but Sense8 - psychic powers, very punk, culture clashing with a dash of present-day noir sort of deal...but I have no idea why but I sort of hated it. I dunno, it just did literally nothing for me and I don't know why, which kinda annoys me because it has all the elements of something I should love...even with the directors making lots of stuff I've liked previously.

I guess Wreckfest?

Trashing cars into each other is quite fun, but the game is so horribly repetitive. Career started out fine with ~4 races per chapter (2 for demolition derbies), but at some point everything turns into tournaments of 3 races (on the same track) each and everything starts taking ages to progress. It's also at the point they up the amount of "days" in a chapter from 4 to 6. (so 12 to 18 races!)

URIs must be properly escaped, they must not contain unescaped
characters below U+0021 including the space character and not
above U+007E. Tidy escapes the URI for you as recommended by
HTML 4.01 section B.2.1 and XML 1.0 section 4.2.2. Some user agents
use another algorithm to escape such URIs and some server-sided
scripts depend on that. If you want to depend on that, you must
escape the URI on your own. For more information please refer to
http://www.w3.org/International/O-URL-and-ident.html

The alt attribute should be used to give a short description
of an image; longer descriptions should be given with the
longdesc attribute which takes a URL linked to the description.
These measures are needed for people using non-graphical browsers.

For further advice on how to make your pages accessible
see http://www.w3.org/WAI/GL.
You are recommended to use CSS to specify the font and
properties such as its size and color. This will reduce
the size of HTML files and make them easier to maintain
compared with using <FONT> elements.

You are recommended to use CSS to control line wrapping.
Use "white-space: nowrap" to inhibit wrapping in place
of inserting <NOBR>...</NOBR> into the markup.
